Austin's Ale House Ratings and Reviews
It's really amazing how restaurants come and restaurants go but this place remains consistently good after being around for decades. Their food is always pleasing, whether you want the basics or a but more gourmet., with lots of choices on the menu. Prices are very moderate. Our party was there for Sunday brunch which is a really great value and excellent, and the cool live music was a definite plus. TheI outdoor dining in the summer is my favorite. We will keep coming back for more.
Food was great. Place was very beautiful inside and I really enjoyed my lamb chop dinner. However, I made a reservation for 2 about 3 weeks in advance. When we went to the place I was expecting them to seat us at a table for 2 . Instead, they put us at a table for 4 when a table for 2 was open right next to us. I really wished we had the table of two since it was a romantic Valentine's Day dinner.
Great atmosphere and service. Ordered Prime rib so it was a 2 hour dining experience, on top it was a busy Friday evening. Waitress did best she can. Prime rib was ok will probably order something else next time. Enjoyed the tap selection and will definitely revisit.
Food was good for a bar food place. We sat outside and unfortunately the waitress tended to forget we were there so our service was slow. She was very nice when she did come out though. I can be a little noisy when the trains go by but the outside seating is nice.
I would recommend it as a convenient place to meet in Kew Gardens if you are an LIRR commuter.
We sat in the dining room as the bar area was crowded with Rangers fans. We were not greeted or brought menus for about 10 minutes. It then took another 15 for a server to come over and ask us if anyone had "taken us." He didn't know the food or beer menu and was confused by our order. When the food arrived one dish was over-cooked, unedible, and not as described on the menu. The other two were fine but nothing special. The server also kept patting us on the shoulder which was just weird.
Food is very good to excellent. We had Quesadillas and Lobster Mac n' Cheese for apps--both were excellent. Steaks were very good as was the Hamburger. The Au Poivre sauce lacked the peppery kick I'm used to-save the $2.50 and use the steak sauce they provide--the steak is good enough without fancy sauce. I gave the service a fair rating as it took close to 2 hours to have dinner on a week night with the restaurant more than half empty. One added feature of this establishment is they have a separate room that has a 21" flat screen TV at each table so you can have dinner and not miss the big game or anything else you might want to watch.
In a word awful,we felt disrespected, waited over an hour for even a bread basket at our table, after chasing our server for the third time,i was told they have two parties going on,overall it was the worst dining experience of my life, and to think we were trying to support local business.
Its funny, me and my girlfriend had been running errands all day and did not want to go anywhere "fancy", as we were in a simple t-shirt and jeans. We tried to go to miller's ale house and the wait was ridiculous. I went on opentable to find a restaurant that seemed casual and like miller's. So whats a better option than another ale house? This place was actually quite fancy in a sense when you walked into the dining area, and the food was rather pricey. The drink selection was large, which we loved. Im a big twisted tea fan, and its hard to find that at a restaurant. The food was good, waiter was quick and checked in on us enough to feel welcomed. Overall it was a good experience.
my family and i (10 adults and 4 kids) had a lunch Sunday. We were seated right away. we ordered drinks and appetizers. the drinks came quickly but the appetizers did not. the same with lunch. We ordered burgers. it was a wait. the portions of course were big. medium rare not really rare but only medium. overall everybody liked it. the kids menu has ice-cream included in the meal. kids loved it.
I found it was good, not great but good. The service was a little slow that night, but it wasn't so bad that I had to rate it horrible. The food was delicious, my only quirk was that my burger was kind of charred on the outside, though somehow it was medium-well as I asked for on the inside. It's a mystery I probably will never solve. I really enjoyed the cocktail drinks, and if you aren't driving spring for the bucket sizes, I find it was well worth the money. The have a sit down area where people can have the restaurant experience and the bar where people crowd and listen to the live band that plays, if it's Friday night. Overall experience, I enjoyed it and would recommend it. I'll definitely return for a bucket drink and a steak that my friend had, and I was jealous of. :)
I made a reservation for 7 for brunch on a sunday morning. It was moderately full, so we had plenty of space where we were sitting. The brunch options are pretty typical but, the prices are very good. The staff was very friendly and attentive and the seemingly limitless baskets of mini muffins and bagels was wonderful for keeping us full as we waited for our food. The drinks were good, and the food was very delicious. It made a very fun morning brunch with a large crowd. Already planning a second trip there.
I went with a few friends, and we all ordered the stuffed filet of sole. We all enjoyed it. Spiced just right. They have daily dessert specials and the pastery chef created a Grand Marnier cupcake which was exceptional. Their fudge brownie was also very good! I'd highly recommend.
This is your standard pub food. Nothing fancy. My steak sandwich was tasty and the steak was actually tender not tough Like you sometimes get. I don't know if I would order anything fancy but I don't know. The dining room could use a makeover which might inspire more confidence in their food.
We where a party of nine on Mother's Day. I know it may not be the best time to go out but order was very slow, not completely correct (ordered egg whites got full eggs and ate it anyway), served at different times (some people were almost finished before others got their meal), and never received the toast that accompanied dishes. Very apologetic and bought us a round of drinks but kitchen needed more help on this day.
we went with friends who had gift certificates. they have a very broad menu. Food was decent but not special. did not see inside of the bar side but the dining room was very dated. i like bars with old dark wood but this room had a decidedly stale feel. this place is off the beaten path for us and i don't think i'd make a special trip to go back.
The food was excellent. Terrific hamburgers. The ambiance eating on their recently enlarged and renovated "trackside" patio (Long Island Rail Road trackside, that is), was a special treat; especially on a warm summer night. Service was friendly and efficient.
On the evening we went they had a large group/party and as a result it took some 45 minutes to just get our salad, because as we were told the kitchen was backed up (due to the party). We only got a bread basket after having to remind the wait staff. The french fries we ordered came as nearly raw baked potatoes, which we would have sent back except by then we were starving. To cap off the evening they made a rather sizable mistake on the bill. Clearly we were not the only unhappy patrons as several tables around us complained to the manager, who clearly acknowledged the problem(s) but never offered anything, such as a drink on the house, to ease the pain.
The menu was relatively short which was nice - we didn't need 1/2 hour just to read the menu! Menu also included a description of how the steaks are cooked. Service was very friendly and obliging but a little forgetful (when reminded they were very quick to fix the little problem). Overall, we enjoyed the food and the place very much and WILL go back!
The service was slow and took a long time for our food to come out. Which was surprising since the restaurant was not even a 1/3 full. The apps (wings and fried calamari) were good. We all order burgers and they were delicious. I would definitely go back, hopefully on a night the service isn't off.
Our overall experience was pleasant. The service was good and the food was delicious. We were not rushed and were able to spend time with our friends chatting after dinner. It was also the All-Star game and it was nice to be able to watch as well.
We would definitely return again some time in the near future.
It was a good dining experience. The only reason that I didn't give them a great rating is because they were not very "Kid" friendly. Although they have great tasting food and the service was ok, I did not like the way the hostess came over and hushed my child and the children at the table next to us. Seriously? its not a quiet restaurant at all, and with everyone chatting and laughing at each table, how dare you come over and address children for be too loud. Especially when there are two set of parents sitting there. If you're not "kid" or family friendly, you should state that as an disclaimer.
Sunday Brunch was really nice. Lots of choices, good food - mini muffins were fantastic. salmon salad was great, burrito absolutely delish and eggs benedict quite yummy -- potatoes were cold but not enough to ruin the meal. Service was very good and it was nice to sit outside. We will surely return.
