Auberge du Soleil Ratings and Reviews
The view and atmosphere at Auberge was lovely, very peaceful and refreshing. Our waiter was very attentive and explained menu options beautifully. Our bread was served warm with butter that melted easily which is always a good sign. The first course was divine - foie gras for me, salad for hubby- both delicious and flavorful. Second course a beautiful fish for me and a hearty chicken dish for him. We were very pleased but our waiter became so engrossed with a large party nearby, we never saw him again! We’d hoped to order wine and found ourselves flagging him down for the prix fixed desert and our check. Maybe it was later in the lunch hour and he’d become distracted but we felt a bit annoyed. We had to rush out to make our next winery appointment.
Bottom line, excellent experience that fell off the service cliff at the end.
The service was surprisingly slow to start, but improved. The food was delicious! The prices are high and I recommend bringing your own bottle of wine. There is a $20 corkage fee. The view is beautiful and a lovely choice for a mild sunny day. We love Napa Valley!
We selected Auberge au Sol to be the pinnacle dinner of our trip in Napa. We ordered the tasting menu, and the food, service, and ambiance did not disappoint. We love octopus and saw that it was on the main menu but not the tasting menu, We were allowed to substitute it for another started and loved it and loved the flexibility. The only only place for improvement was the wine pairing and wine prices. We got the wine pairing with the tasting menu and none of wines were memorable. The full wine list is very extensive, but the prices are about 50% higher than other fine restaurants in the area.
The service was distracted and perfunctory. It took nearly 15 minutes for the server to arrive, wasn’t engaged, and was absent nearly all of the meal except to take order and drop check. He was more concerned about an 8 top that had sat than his other tables who were also complaining amongst themselves. The food was good as usual. Dining isn’t all about the food though.
I have to say that I was a bit disappointed by the food. That's why you're splurging for a Michelin star restaurant, right? Maybe I've eaten out too much? My expectations were really high. The starter of Fois grois was really good. That was the highlight. The second courses were good, but not great. The main course of duck was good but not great. The chef's sauces were good but not great. Also, the chef put nuts in almost every dish. Not sure what the fascination with nuts was... The bright spot? Our server was fantastic and she did a great job. The sommelier was super and recommended a great wine! It's just too bad that the food really didn't wow us. I have to say, this really wasn't worth it. I've been to Michelin star restaurants in Europe and Asia and they just blow this place away. Everyone was just good. Not great. My expectation was to be blown away. I didn't get that. Maybe we just ordered the wrong items? Not sure, but if you are a foodie you should be prepared to be disappointed.
