Traditional French menu and execution. Small and intimate, but as the guests enjoy themselves, the noise level can rise.
In the cooler months, Cassoulet. Hooray, foie gras has returned. You like snails? Come on down.
For dessert, chose Bergamote or Floating Island. Other are good as well.
However, if you are in to large portions, don't bother. That not what eating well is all about.
Some eat to live, myself, I live to eat.
Seriously good Provence-style cooking in a tiny bistro in a strip mall 10 mins drive from Capitola, with friendly owners (husband and wife) and staff, and a small but stellar menu! Coming back here for sure...
I must say the food & presentation was exceptional - however, there was no value for what we spent. The portions are very, very small. We feel that portions could be increased by 25/30% without that much cost to the restaurant.
Reasonably small space, nothing overly fancy except the food. Absolutely delicious and wonderfully prepared French dishes. The sweetbreads starter, foie gras pate and duck Margaret were done to perfection. Very intimate setting and it was obvious there was a real passion for great food. Looking forward to next visit.
Unusual and delectable food. Excellent service.
I had the excellent Sea Bass dish and my companion had the mussels, and we were very pleased. We both had the delicious creamed onion soup, and for dessert had floating island and the French apple pie. There were some great French (as well as local) wines on the menu by the glass. Nothing like authentic French cooking to make a dinner special!
Au Midi is a small, sincerely French restaurant. The menu is small, but touches the four corners of tastes. We booked for our trip from Sacramento. While this is not an expensive, amazing location or extravagant building, the facilities are reasonable and parking was good.
Now, here's the better part: Food was excellent. Service was excellent.
Staff was small, but very attentive. Two servers tagged-teamed and did the rare always-there, never-bothersome performance. The Cream of Onion soup was smooth, creamy, perfectly seasoned and balanced. The two of us were grateful we both ordered the soup so we did not have to share.
Great duck is...great. Anything less than great is terrible. My duck was great. Portion was generous and the dollops of potatoes were tasty, but a little sparse.
My date was surprised with a off-menu Fillet Mignon I requested by e-mail. The steak was cooked exactly to her personal taste and was a perfect hit.
The small wine list is reasonable and varied. There is a good pairing for whatever one orders.
The French Apple pie was full of taste while maintaining a light theme. Do not pass this desert. The Floating Island is largely a meringue pie without the pie. It was (maybe too) generous in portion and complex, but it did not seem the perfect cap for an amazing dining experience.
We will return and I cannot wait to sample their scallops. I might actually request scallops be added to a salad as a starter course. Then I can get a second entre within one meal!
This is a sweet little chef/owner bistro, with a fab wine list and amazing presentation. The ambiance is a little lacking, in that the room was cold, the furnishings are a bit sparse/cold and the lighting a bit harsh, but the food more than makes up for these details. I do believe ambiance is as important as the meal, but this is such a sweet bistro, I am happy to overlook these things. The wine list is great, with a good selection of both regional and French wines, the food is SPECTACULAR and the service is a bit lacking. I mean, the food is really amazing, with the tweezers placing the mushrooms on the plate type of place, the duck was done incredibly well with a sauce that was unforgettable. The sweetbreads were fried very well, with a soft smoothness, so tasty. I would recommend dining here, but there are a few things that need work. The service was off, the ambiance needs a warm and inviting touch and the heater needs to be turned on. Otherwise, enjoy!
We love having a meal at au Midi, the food is imaginative, and well prepared, service is pleasant, and the restaurant is a quiet place in which to enjoy it. Try the warm vegetable salad for a starter, any of the mains, and the bergemot dessert and you'll be happy.
Our family has enjoyed many great meals at Au Midi when in Aptos visiting relatives. On this occasion we particularly liked the escargot ravioli, the sweet breads appetizer, the melt in your mouth beef dish and the sea bass. The waiters are familiar with the local wines and we enjoyed one we had not tried before, but the name escapes me.
Food was spectacular as always. If you don't know, you must go!
Excellent foods, wine, dessert and service was simply the best.
The best as usual. We had a quite and delicious diner. Everything on the menu is good (actually more than just good!)
This is a tiny little place in a older strip mall. Both my date's duck and my salmon (in a wonderful leek/cilantro sauce) were wonderful. The snail raviole was amazing.
We went to Au Midi this past Friday evening. First time, and had heard good things. An under statement. The food from start to finish was spectacular, we both had the Halibut. I started with a cream of mushroom soup and my wife had the foie gras. Both were fantastic. The wine list is a little limited, but I understand why with a small restaurant. Several customers brought their own wine, which we will do next time. The service was great, but a little slow because they only had two servers, the owner and another server. Both were very good but stretched thin.
Definitely will return.
Loved it! Went there for wife Cathy birthday (who is Gluten intolerant) and 4 friends. We had such great time. The food was delicious! The service was discrete but very efficient. The owner was extremely helpful. I had first reserved for 2 but then I decide to invite more and more people and the owner was very accommodating. And I appreciated that. Finally I ordered roses to be put on our table (using another service) and the flowers were set as I expected.
In any event, a great evening with good friends and GREAT food/wines :)
Mo & Cathy
Excellent French food, imaginative, personal touch of chef Muriel. Comparable to a good bistro in Paris.
There is not much else to say. The food and service are excellent. The whole experience is rare in these parts, and from the moment you step in you are welcomed and treated like family--one that has a master chef in the kitchen. I cannot say enough good things about this place, except part of me hopes that this will remain a hidden gem in the Santa Cruz area.
consistently fabulous, it's a symphony for your palate
Great food as always and the owner is sooo nice. The prices are reasonable also.
Came to Au Midi for my boyfriend's birthday. He got the duck, which has always been a favorite, and I got the salmon - yum! We also got the snails for an appetizer. They certainly didn't look like snails as the presentation was wonderful. I think there were mushrooms in the dish too. Very tasty. The panna cotta dessert was to die for with strawberry and rhubarb atop. Perfect light dessert to finish off the meal.
Have been to Au Midi many times over the years, every time is a culinary experience. Muriel and Michel do an outstanding job of making you feel welcome. The food is truly exceptional. We have had the good fortune to dine at many Michelin stared restaurants. This food is of Michelin quality. Certainly a Bib gourmand level restaurant. However, Michelin doesn’t rate restaurants in Aptos.
This is a go to restaurant when you want an excellent French dinner without the fuss. Good wine selection. Staff is great.
Had to finally ask to order wine, very slow. Food was very good but wine list limited.
This gem sits an unlikely location, and its lack of curb appeal is a reminder not to "judge a book by its cover." Inside, you'll find meticulous attention to dishes that reward your tongue with ravishing melanges of delicate taste. The small menu is complemented by a list of interesting wine options. We've not sampled everything on the menu, but what we've tried suggests that there is not a bad choice to be found anywhere on the menu. Don't pass this one up, if you like creative French food.
Au Midi has authentic french food, which is freshly prepared. The taste is excellent, especially the soups are terrific. Good service by Michel, one of the owners. His wine recommendations are always spot on.
Amazing!! the food was excellent, very unique. A small romantic spot to enjoy a good meal, good wine, and great service. Don't let the setting in a strip mall fool you, this is a place well worth trying. We will be back!!!
We had snail ravioli appetizer, a salad and filet mignon. Excellent.
The very best French Bistro in Santa Cruz County! Always creative and delicious food!
We've eaten at all of the high-end restaurants in Santa Cruz county and this is, without question, the best food. The ambiance is not fancy but with Michel as the host and Muriel's food, we love it. And, several times, Muriel has told us her recipe and cooking secrets. Don't try to reproduce her ginger carrots.
An excellent 4th of July Dinner always well done. A moderate menu with excellent choices for everyone.
3rd or 4th time at Au Midi and each time it gets better. The food is excellent, beautifully presented, and delicious. The ambiance is quiet and restful and the service unhurried and relaxing. Since we know the food will be wonderful, we often bring one of our best bottles of wine and offer a taste with our server. Au Midi has become our "go to" spot for friends and visitors. It is owned by the chef wife and server-host husband who are justifiably proud of the dining experience. 5 stars
Very imaginative menu. Appetizers were outstanding. We had the ravioli of French snails, the stuffed red peppers and the warm organic garden salad. All were outstanding. Dinner entrees were also very well done. We had the duck magritte, the pork belly and the ling cod. Best meal that I have had in Santa Cruz / Aptos.
The food here is great, very gourmet and French. The servings are small, but the food is rich and that's all that you need. For us the menu was special and I would recommend it to anyone, except those that are fans of big helpings and are steak and potato kind of people.
I can no longer complain that Santa Cruz is home to the central coast's most mediocre restaurants. Au midi is a very low key but elegant atmosphere. It is as if you have been invited to a friend's home, and your friend is an outstanding chef. Each dish is visually stunning, and I have never been even slightly disappointed in the flavors and especially the sauces. Try it!!
We missed the always excellent mussels this time because they are not in season, but the onion soup and the halibut with it light foamy sauce made up for the lack of our favorite entree here.. Anything on the dessert menu is special.
Au Midi is a spectacularly great restaurant. Tucked into an inconspicuous little shopping center lies a gem of a French Restaurant. Innovative and superlative dishes. Great service. A getaway to France without the jet-lag!
We go to Au Midi about once a month or whenever we have a special occasion. The food is always fabulous. We like how the menu changes with the seasons so there is always something new for us to try. Our reaction to new dishes is, "Wow! How do they do that?' The best part is the chef will come by the table and tell us how she makes the dish. Au Midi is one of the best parts of living in Aptos.
The food was good, but not great - especially for the cost of a meal. The service felt
rushed - so not exactly fine dining despite the pretense.
We have always been pleased at Au Midi, it is consistently the top restaurant in the county, amazing quality, artistry and warmth. We have shared this favorite restaurant with many friends and family and everyone has loved it. A real gem!
Staff was very friendly and helpful. Food was very good. Restaurant is quiet. A good place in Aptos.
