About Athens Market Taverna
Family owned since 1964, Athens Market Taverna has been a gathering place for dignitaries, politicians, sports celebrities and Hollywood stars, from Elizabeth Montgomery ("Bewitched") to Andy Rooney.
Owner Mary Pappas is a third-generation restaurateur who moved to San Diego from Greece in 1961 to attend school.
A pioneer in downtown's renaissance, Pappas renovated the bottom floor of the historic Senator Hotel and moved her restaurant from E Street to its current location in 1986.
In 1994, she expanded her restaurant to the North County location and added a concession in the San Diego Convention Center, a popular eatery for out-of-towners.

Athens Market Taverna Ratings and Reviews
Mary is a wonderful entrepreneur. She knows her business and she is the perfect hostess! Mary is always open to suggestions and willing to try something new.
She truly cares about each and every customer and truly cares about the food she has on her menu and to make sure each and every customer is satisfied at Athens Market!
I have never had a bad meal at Athens Market. I always recommend it to out of town friends and to anyone & everyone who asks where the best restaurant is to have a wonderful Happy Hour and a fabulous lunch or dinner.
Yeah we had a good time celebrating Valentines Day. There were a lot of people there but spread over a couple large dining rooms I was never aware of noise. I had the salmon and my wife had the shrimp and steak kebob. I will be more adventurous next time. The service was plentiful and attentive. Nice place.
I am constantly returning here for the comtinued overall experience! When wanting authentic Mediterranean cuisine with a atmosphere intimate enough to engage on quality conversation. The service is attentive enough to meet your needs, and not be overbearing, this is it! For you paleo obsessed types. I recommend this location for dinners though, lunch here is a completely different animal. Busy like a hive and parking difficult because it's footprint next to Horton Plaza and the buisiness lunch crowds.
They were having a meet and greet (or something). It was extremely loud and really annoying. It was my husbands birthday and there were 5 of us. It was a very disappointing evening. Had I known I would have come on a different night. Now, I'm not sure I'll be back. Most of the food was really good.
Food was very good. My salmon was tender and flaky. The other 3 at the table were highly appreciative of their meals. There was plenty to eat, and we ate everything on our plates! Desserts were amazing. Service was awesome, friendly, and relaxed. The menu was a bit more expensive than I would normally pay for a meal. However, for a special occasion or a great place to have a conversation and still be heard across the table - terrific choice! As we went on the Saturday night before Halloween and it's near the Gaslamp District, parking was a challenge. Then we found a public lot very close by - 10 bucks; worth it (vs. driving and driving).
Truly our most enjoyable dinner while staying the week in San Diego. The most relaxing dinner experience with a great atmosphere and incredible service. The food was traditional and authentic Greek. Our server, who I believe was Jennifer, was fantastic. I highly recommend!!
Don't recommend the place. Food didn't taste good at all. Even worst it made me sick 40 minutes u ate it. Service was bad. Our starter was forgotten and the server didn't even notice it. The only good thing was the bread. Overall I left hungry with upset stomach
