We tried this for the first time on a recent weekend trip. The olives and saganaki were great and fun! Best yet, my partner said the chicken was the best he ever had in his life!
Should have known it was going to be a memorable meal when they sat our group of 4 next to a birthday party of 16! The noise level was so loud we could not enjoy any part of our dinner. The service was slow (to be expected on a very busy Saturday at 7:30), but nothing could make-up for the loud, rowdy birthday party revelers who wanted to share their evening with the entire restaurant. The food was just good. Not great. For appetizers the saganaki was excellent, while the spanakopita was terrible; basically spinach in puff pastry with no feta, dill, mint or scallion tasting notes. The bread served with dinner was hard and the butter semi-frozen. For entrees my son had calamares (normally an appetizer) but it tasted and looked like a beer battered fish fry. Not very good. The pastitsio was absolutely wonderful. We'd get it again. The experience seemed like a Greek Olive Garden. Not exceptional or great. No real concern about detail or authenticity. Just move 'em in, feed 'em, and get 'em out.
Loong delay beyond reservation to be seated and no real acknowledgement of wait
Nice option in Greektown.
Had the fried zucchinis with potato/garlic spread app and the broiled whitefish for dinner. App was tasty, the spread was very flavorful and worked well with the zucchinis. The fish was fresh, lemon butter was spot on. Nice service, reasonable prices. I'll be there again soon
Terrific place for good time and delicious food and drinks
This is the first time we were in there since the renovation! Absolutely love it! More modern decor with an authentic Greek feel. The bartender, Melody, is lovely. She was knowledgeable about the cocktail menu and food menu. Top notch service! Great food!! We will be back!!
Excellent service and quality food and drinks. Would recommend to any friend looking for authentic Greek cuisine
Lovely, we were seated right away by the fireplace, nice touch
Not a good experience this time around. The last couple haven't been that great on the culinary side. New chef?
Phenomenal food and beautiful atmosphere. The service was beyond wonderful and the lamb was to die for. Would give 5 stars in a heartbeat!
Great food and great service! Never disappointed!
Plenty of room, great service. Was able to stay for a couple hours talking and eating
I have been dining at Athenas since 1993. The Food is consistently excellent and the ambiance is creative. It is a beautiful place for dining that offers an atmosphere of richness with an extensive menu and the most reasonable prices ever!
Wonderful choice in Greektown. Attentive wait staff and fpod waa delicious!
Amazing place with delicious food, as always. Great vibes
My fiancé and I decided to try Greek Town. We came away completely amazed and are already planning another trip. The restaurant décor and overall appearance was very warm and welcoming. We waited a little bit for our server to come over, but once he did, he balanced the time well with us and spaced out our meals. Our waiter Sokrates made several recommendations from the Octopus dish on the appetizer menu, to many different chicken dishes. All were extremely good. Considering we had a few recommendations for one, along with some Miller Lite for our check to come in at $82 with two appetizers, we were amazed. Great experience overall.
We do not live in Chicago but found Athena years ago while visiting. We make sure to go every time we're in Chicago and have recommended it to family/friends who are traveling there.
We’ve been here before and had great meals. The food is always excellent. This time our wait was a bit off putting. He gave us attitude about several different things and was not helpful. It put a significant damper on our evening.
Food was salty and not accommodating for gluten allergies
The evening was a disaster. We have been to the Athena in the past and had enjoyed our meal - but we had always gone during the week. This Saturday evening the place was packed and both the staff and the kitchen were obviously overwhelmed. It took about an hour to get our appetizers to the table and then we were informed that the kitchen had run out of whitefish (actually, that the last dish had been dropped by a cook) - so it was another half hour before the replacement main dishes were served one one of them was stone cold - so that one had to go back. The staff was polite - two of us got comped on a glass of wine - but clearly there was little they could do to improve the experience. Our friends, who had driven in from the suburbs at our suggestion, were really unhappy: an hour's drive into the city and another hour to get back home for the pleasure of long waits between courses and cold food. Not good. Don't try this on a Saturday night!
WORST SERVICE EVER !! The restaurant was busy ish. The waiter brought us drinks but never checked up on us but everyone else got their meals and drinks. Appetizers took 30 min and no one checked up on us, we had to ask the busboy to get us more drinks. Dirty plates never got cleared and we started to get annoyed because it was 1.5 hours since we got seated and still no dinner but with dirty appetizer plates and empty glasses. At that point we just wanted to leave and we did! It was completely unacceptable, never going there again and neither should you! POOR SERVICE all around!!
Our food was delicious! I loved that even on a Saturday night the waiter didn't rush us. We were there two hours but didn't feel pressured to get out of there. I did have to laugh when my friend ordered the lamb & artichoke and wanted her lamb medium rare. The waiter just shook his head no. You get it the way the cook makes it - no special orders! But she had to admit that when she tasted it the chef got it right - it was wonderful! We will be back soon!
Athena's is our go to for a fantastic date. This time we opted for a bottle of wine and a myriad of appetizers. You cannot go wrong with the Saganaki, cold octopus salad, or the feta stuffed red peppers. The servers are friendly, attentive, and always treat you like you are special. A smile goes a long way.
Food was good for the price but we were seated in the side room which was loud and lacks ambiance.
Always enjoy Athena! It is extra special in the summer but we enjoyed a great winter dinner recently. The appetizers are excellent, especially the grilled octopus. The whole Sea Bass was outstanding as usual. Service was very good as well!
I had been to Athena frequently several years ago, and then I moved. I have been back twice in the last two months and both times have been excellent.
Wonderful and delicious food, great place for dinning.
Our family went to The Parthenon for over 40 years but needed to find an alternative after they closed. Athena has met our need and is our new go-to Greek restaurant in chicago!
Everything was perfect!
Spanakopita, NY strip topped with creamy mushroom sauce and the chefs special raisin rum cake was delicious. Great experience will recommend!
