Tasteless and unauthentic food
I booked a reservation for 2 for 8:45pm on Saturday (5/18/19). At 8:35, i received a call from the restaurant canceling our reservation because the “kitchen was full”. This was rather frustrating because my date and I travelled 40 minutes to get to the restaurant, only to find out that they canceled the reservation 10 minutes before. We were then left scrambling around trying to find a place to eat without a long wait.
They ran out of bread. Also, my chicken was supposed to come with potatoes and rice, but they ran out so they gave me okra and peas instead. However, the server did not mention this ahead of time- it was a surprise when I got my meal. We waited 40 minutes before being greeted at the table (our table was not set up and we didn't have silverware). Also, it took over an hour for the food to come. Overall, it was a terrible experience and I would not recommend coming here.
Wedding anniversary dinner Saturday 8:15pm. Crowded but were seated within 10 minutes. Young lady server was pleasant but mostly absent. She took way too long to take and serve drink order. We chose appetizers instead of entrees after realizing it may be unrealistic to ask staff to take the time needed to de-bone a sea bass and a snapper. We'll be back for lunch not dinner.
I've been here many times, and one of my favorite restaurants in Chicago. It was a very busy Saturday night and the staff seemed overwhelmed with the number of people they had to serve. The big disappointment was that the lamb chops came out well done when I ordered them medium. My guests enjoyed their dinners very much.
Restaurant was over crowded, they physically scooted our table twice while we were eating. They ran out of bread, and our waiter had too many tables because he couldn’t even refill our water
I had a server named Tony who was extremely rude to my table and demanded that we place our order when we just wanted to have a slow and relaxed dinner. There were actually times that the waiter visibly rolled his eyes at me. I have been to this restaurant before and the food and menu appears to have changed and it was noticeably worse than past experiences.
Food came too fast and seemed not well prepared. Server seemed indifferent to the pace.
We love the food ... inside/outside options ... the valet parking. It’s a perfect place for us to come downtown for dinner.
Nice open space with good distance between tables. Open and partially covered atrium is good. Food was excellent. Service was alright - they took their time but it was fine because it was a relaxed dinner with visiting family members and we were in no rush.
Would recommend the lamb dishes and the pita with multiple dips.
Great food as always. The waiter provided excellent service. He made the evening a very enjoyable experience.
Food is consistently good.
The service is always good.
Something has changed here, first time in many many visits, I wasn’t crazy about the food. Never had red sauce, like crushed tomatoes red sauce on pastishio. It was awful. Not loving the new menu either.
Athena is a great spot for pretty much every occasion - birthdays, Mother's Day, other events, or just a casual lunch or dinner. The food is excellent. The servers are very attentive. The atmosphere is beautiful. And, there's free Valet parking! I highly recommend this restaurant.
Friendly staff and good service. Food was hot and cooked to perfection. The only thing that disappointed me they did not have Greek spinach pm the menu.
The service, food, and ambiance were excellent. I look forward to returning.
With so many choices in Greek Town, Athena’s menu stands out above the others...as does their service and ambiance. Keep in mind that in the glass atrium room it can get quite loud, so this isn’t the place to go for a quiet dinner.
Beautiful room, great service. Food was pretty good, not amazing. Very clean and bright, parking was convenient.
Been there several times and never had a problem. Our server Friday night was horrible never came back to see if we wanted more drinks or to check how the food was. Waited forever to get our check.
Food was great. Especially liked the "open air" setting.
Great visit. Staff was outstanding and the meal was excellent. Restaurant is beautiful. If you are able have dinner in the outside dining area.
Busboy was good. Server not as attentive.
It was a nice time
Service was good
Delicious fish and lamb selections. Very fun atmosphere.
Things have changed drastically at this restaurant, including a new menu and everything being a la carte. I was told a corporate entity bought the restaurant and it sadly feels that way! I found the new menu very reduced & hard to read. Our party was definitely disappointed about the a la carte part. I ordered the Greek green beans anyway and they didn’t seem to be the same—not very saucey and without flavor. Three in our party ordered chicken kabobs and all returned them complaining they were too salty & gristly. They felt the quality of the meat was cheapened. I enjoyed my gyros & Greek salad—thankfully that was the same. The restaurant was busy, but not packed on a Saturday night as it has been in the past. Athena used to be my favorite restaurant in Greektown. I hope the bean counters that bought this place realize they need a little heart & soul in the cooking, as well!
Server was good; there were no bus servers around. We cleared our plates on our own several times. We went an a non busy time so it seemed really strange
The salads and the entrees (chicken kabobs) were excellent. The appetizers were mediocre (hummus plate and saganaki). The atmosphere is very nice, with the skylight roof.
I have frequent this restaurant for years and I am very disappointed in my overall experience this time around. The service was lacking, the food was absolutely horrible and when we told management, it wasn’t a major concern to them. Sad to say, I will never go back to Athena’s
It was understandably crowded on Greek Easter, but it was very loud and hard to converse at dinner.
Great overall experience as always! Excellent authentic Greek cuisine. Excellent friendly service. Festive atmosphere. Reasonably priced. Great place for a date or to have a great time with a group of friends. Highly recommend!
We arrived and were seated promptly.
Loved the decor and atmosphere.
Stellar authentic Greek cuisine!
Our waiter did a wonderful job of taking care of us.
Very impressed and highly recommended!
I was not given a proper table to sit at but a bar table. In addition to this, the lady from the bar who was supposed to take my order mixed up and brought me the wrong entree but it was too busy to feel like correcting the mistake. Plus they already didn't value me as a customer because I wasn't seated at a regular table. Also, the dessert I ordered (Ek Mek) was unbelievably too sweet. I honestly don't know how it sells. Lastly, the price point of this restaurant is higher so to have this kind of experience and end up with $50 bill is unacceptable.
Always a pleasure to visit Athena Restaurant, a small heaven in the City's concrete jungle. Food, service and atmosphere are always excellent.
Spent Greek Easter at Athena.
Overall we had a wonderful time. The food was fantastic and the service really good. We had a wonderful time.
We had not been there in awhile since we live in Springfield. Springfield has no fine dining Greek restaurant and wanting to celebrate Greek Easter we knew Athena would be perfect. It’s a lovely restaurant - great bar to have a drink while waiting for your table, friendly bartender - dining room we like looks out into the street (opens up in warm weather) - great menu, great food! We make a point of eating there when in Chicago for other events.
It's such a shame. I have been going to Athena for about 15 or so years. The ambiance was cool, the service was excellent and the food was very good. Something happened in the last six months - likely the business was sold. Food was barely adequate. :(
Love the servers
We love this place for a classic Greek night out. Service by Riley was great. Food was outstanding. If you want to try a great Greek restaurant in Chicago. . .Athena is it!
We had dinner at Athena on Easter (American) and we’re lucky enough to sit outdoors on a warm day. The service was good, and the waiter apologized when I asked for a wine on the menu that they were out of (Alpha Estate Sauvignon Blanc). We started with saganaki, which could not be flamed tableside due to the wind. It was tasty nonetheless. I ordered moussaka, but I removed the thick topping and ate the ground beef and eggplant. It was very flavorful. My dining partner ordered roasted chicken with rice. He reported that it was not as flavorful as chicken riganati, which was not on the menu. We also ordered dessert—chocolate cake and baklava—both were large and delicious.
