Asti Ristorante Ratings and Reviews
I had dinner at Asti the night before the Rock 'n Roll Half Marathon, and the place WAS NOT AT ALL PREPARED for the traffic that they received that night. We were seated 30 minutes after our reservation time, even though there were multiple tables available that were "being saved for larger parties that were coming in" and the hostesses were scantily clad in mini-dresses meant for a nightclub rather than an elegant Italian restaurant. Our server failed to mention any specials to us, and also served me whole wheat spaghetti when I ordered regular semolina wheat penne. He failed to mention that the restaurant was out of penne. The food was decent, but the rest of the experience made me never want to return.
I'm glad I chose to go back to Asti. I had been there a year ago while visiting San Diego as a participant in a road race the food then was great! This year I went back and carb loaded the night before my marathon and they even had a menu designed specifically for the runners of the Rock and Roll Marathon! Food came out hot which in todays restaurant scene this is very unlikely. Thanks for another great dinning experience.
We went to celebrate, adn to be honest, it wasn't a blast! The server was pushy (if we asked for drinks he would say, would you prfer a bottle?, if we asked for appetizers he would ask if we want to order more things...). Then, they claim to serve a Lobster Bisque, and $10.50 later you get a watery soup with Lobster pieces). We made a reservation with open table for 8:30 but we sat until 9:00. Service was sloooow, so slow, that we got complimentary desserts. There are so many places in that are that it wouldn't be my first, second or third choice
I had my first Asti Ristorante experience more than five years ago, which was FABULOUS. I have dined at Asti Ristorante numerous times since, both with large groups of 20 and intimate parties of 2...have NEVER been disappointed. The food is superb. The service, however, is unparalleled. The waiters are knowledgeable, attentive, and really make the evening an event...without being obtrusive. Tony took care of me and my group of 10 this last experience. He made wonderful recommendations, kept the pace of dinner flowing without being rushed, and even accommodated a late arrival seamlessly. The restaurant is on busy Fifth Avenue, but the atmosphere inside is energetic yet "protected"...you don't feel jostled even though the place is busy
We had a business dinner at Asti on May 7th. The food was good. We were not "wowed" as other reviewers were. The shrimp and lobster pasta lacked depth of flavor. It could have used vegetables or herbs to brighten the dish. Our co-workers seafood sampler was enough food for at least three people. The lasagne came out with a bit of a burnt top that should probably have been sent back to redo. The calamari and shrimp appetizers were the best of the evening. The service was good and the servers were attentive most of the time until the patio got busy. It was overall a good experience, not great. If I were to return to San Diego, I would probably try another italian restaurant before returning to Asti.
This place was a nice place to eat. The pasta bowls are very filling or from what they seemed like they were pretty huge. I ordered a ceasar salad and it was a joke. It had maybe a few strips of romaine lettuce and it was very unsatisfying. The "calamari" was a combination of tempura + calamari (hardly any). We also ordered a pasta which was probably the only good thing that we got.
It felt as if they were rushing us, figured it was late and they wanted to get out of there, but then saw them seat 2 more tables when we were almost done with dinner. Sent filet back to get cooked as ordered and it seemed to be a production surrounding it. Waiter described the Lump crab linguine dish with "mounds" of fresh lump crab, but it came it with barely a shred of crab.
We went on a Tuesday evening so I'm sure the streat noise was at it's lowest. The food was exceptional, especially the shrimp tizer which was memoreable. I had the lamb chops/Super Fantastic and one of my group had veal shank, wonder as well. Two others had the veal marsalla which as terrific as well. We all took a protion of our meal at the conclusion which is a sign of good portion. The prices are high but the service and food is excellent.
There was something for everyone in our party of 16--from traditional Italian fare to steaks, lamb and seafood. The calamari appetizer platter featured the addition of lightly battered vegetables along with a wonderful marinara sauce. Several people had the lamb chop special and several the steak special and pronounced both as some of the best they'd ever had. I highly recommend the lasagna. Delicious! Service was timely and efficient. Our only complaint was that our large party felt pretty cramped; however the delicious food and wonderful service made up for that. I would definitely return to Asti.
Our food was excellent, as was the service. The house chianti was a slight disappointment, but I am sure the restaurant would have allowed us to get something else if we had spoken up on it. Everything else was so wonderful, there was no need. We would definitely return :)
Make sure you call the restaurant to confirm they got your reservation if you book on Open Table. We made a reservation for 4 and when we showed up they didn't have a reservation. Having said that they were very accommodating and somehow managed to find us a table on a very busy Saturday night. Love the atmosphere of this somewhat quaint high energy restaurant. Feels very much like you are in Italy. Food was fantastic especially the caprese salad and mixed seafood pasta. My only complaint and this is a complaint I have generally have with many restaurants in the U.S. is that the portions are way too big. Some may like this but after spending time in Europe They do a much better job with portions.
We took my cousin, his wife, and her new baby here for dinner. It's in a great location in the gaslamp district in downtown San Diego. The service was very good - our server was Italian and we had a great time practicing out Italian with him. He made some great recommendations as well. They were also very flexible and accommodating as far as seating, since we had a baby in a carrier. The manager was present and came by several times to check on us, which was nice. My scallops were fabulous too!
Unfortunately my review does not include food as we were never seated. We had reservations for 8 pm and there was a group waiting outside to be seated. No big deal as it was Valentines Day so a wait was expected. We checked in and the hostess told us that we would be seated after a few of the groups that arrived before us. By 8:15 most of the groups that had been there when we arrived had been seated, and by 8:20 we were sure that we were next. By 8:30 we were still waiting outside, watching at least 5 couples that arrived after us get a table. By 8:40, after standing 10 feet from the hostess for 40 minutes and never given so much as an apology, we left and were seated (with drinks) at a nearby restaurant by 8:50. I will not be returnin
Great high-end Italian food. However, either our waiter or the cashier stole my credit card number during the payment process, and three internet purchases were attempted within 24 hours. My card was canceled, resulting in great inconvenience. This is the third time this has happened to me after using a card at a restaurant. In the future I will use only cash. As a result, I will never patronize this restaurant again.
We are repeat customers but hadn't been to Asti in quite a few years. We were happy to see that the food was as great as we remembered and the service, in spite of being the busiest day of the year, was excellent. Our only disappointment was that it was too chilly to eat outdoors.
I made reservations for 2, but when we got there, a table wasn't available. After 5 minutes, they seated us at a table for 6 with a prime view, rather than make us wait. We even offered to wait, but the hostess insisted. And right after seating, a table for 2 opened up, and once again we offered to move. The hostess suggested we not move (not be inconvenienced). The restaurant isn't that big, so giving up a large table for only two people is what I truly call "service." The rest of the dinner was equally special, from food to ambiance to service. I will definitely return.
I booked this place for a group work event during a conference last week. Having never been to San Diego I had made the reservation sight-unseen. I was incredibly impressed with both the food and the service at Asti. The staff was very accommodating to our constantly shifting attendee numbers and the food was delicious. Our server was excellent! He even recognized us walking through the neighborhood the next day and stopped to say hello. Overall, a wonderful experience and we hope to return in the future.
