Asti Ristorante Ratings and Reviews
We decided to meet up in downtown San Diego for business and dinner. Sitting outside provided great ambience with great service and great food. Kudos to Mark, our server, for staying on top of things with great energy and recommendations without being intrusive. I’ll be back.
We went to Asti for our anniversary during a trip to San Diego. The interior is very pleasant, but we were seated along the wall under glaring in ceiling down lighting, I asked if they could be turned down & after watching lights in other areas of the dining room go up & down, it was finally accomplished. Our waiter was nice, but spoke very little English.
To start, I had the caprese salad, my husband had minestrone & we both enjoyed our starters. For our entrees I opted for gnocchi with gorgonzola & my husband had chicken Marsala. We both enjoyed our meals, although the Marsala could have used more wine & the gnocchi was a bit heavier than I like.
We finished by sharing perfiteroles & as we were wrapping up, the waiter brought us a tiramisu & wished us happy anniversary.
Everything except the food was nice. We ate after the theater and had great service and a lovely table. The problem was all of us had dry, relatively tasteless pasta. We could not get enough salt and pepper on the dishes to make them good. Maybe the late hour was the problem.
Our meal was very good, but the service was very bad. We had to ask the hostess to find our waiter to refill our drinks. The guy never came by to ask us if our meal was prepared properly, but only to give us our check.
On the other hand, we sat outside for dinner and the view was interesting. I've come to the conclusion that being in the Gaslamp district is like people watching in Las Vegas.
The food and service was incredible! Mark was our server and he made several suggestions from the specials menu which we fortunately took his advice on. We shared the buffalo mozzarella and tomato appetizer which was like none I'd ever had before. Delicious! Then I had the Sea Bass which was delectable and just melted in your mouth! My husband had the spaghetti and meatballs which were excellent. They had quite an extensive gluten free pasta menu which we didn't need but others may enjoy. We were visiting San Diego on a business/pleasure trip. We had dined at some of the other notable recommended restaurants on previous nights in San Diego, Coronado and La Jolla . I would have to say this was our favorite restaurant and would recommend this as a "must dine at restaurant " while in San Diego. It's convenient to the convention center and other entertainment in the area. While it doesn't have a waterfront view, it certainly hits the mark on all other aspects if you want great food and service!
After perusing through the options available close to our hotel in the Gaslamp Quarter, and having a dual craving for Italian, we selected Asti Ristorante and WOW, did we make the right choice! We reserved a table outside and as we approached the hostess stand right at 8:00 PM, the Hostess greeted us with a big smile and took us immediately to our table. The perfect spot on the patio for a lovely dinner.
Mark, the waiter, was awesome. Great personality, enthusiastic greeting and delivery of the specials and a fantastic recommendation of the prosciutto wrapped chicken with spinach and garlic under a brilliant mushroom sauce and I was in heaven! My wife had the hand made ravioli and they were spectacular! A great bottle of wine, just the right amount of attention while respecting our date night, and all in all, one of the best dining experiences in a long time and we left thrilled. Thanks Mark and team! Compliments to the chef et al, and we'll be back!! I wish Toronto was closer! Til next time .....
Service is great! You never have to look around for your waiter because he is always there at the proper time. Food is absolutely delicious and arrived to your table piping hot, which is very important to me. The seasoning of the food that it makes you look forward to your next meal there while you are having your current meal.
Cioppino had bay scallops and baby shrimp. Would never expect that for the price. I did not feel the quality of the food was high at all. My bro in law got the chicken wrapped in bacon. He said it was the driest chicken he has ever eaten. Bread served was just ok. we had to ask for oil and cheese to dip. Had to ask several time for water to be filled. I would expect that and be ok if it was not such a high priced restaurant Really bummed. Only here a week and thought it would be a winner, Wasted $200+ at this place for sure
This restaurant is wonderful. Terrific service (Mark) and great food (Octopus appetizer, Spaghetti Bolognese done just right, and a superb Cabernet). Outstanding food in a relaxed atmosphere. If we get back to San Diego, of the many fine restaurants there, Asti will be at the top of our list.
We have been coming to Asti for over 10 years...our very first server, Juan Kim, made our experience so wonderful...he was very personable, knew the menu and made great recommendations. We just went back again and were so happy to see that Juan was there! I think this is l a testament to the management...
the ability to keep great employees for such a long time in a very competitive business...the food was still amazing and we "rolled" out of there very full, happy and satisfied. We would highly recommend! OH, and ask for Juan!
We were in town for a little get away. Was told by our Uber driver that if we wanted great Italian to try Asti. It was a 3 minute walk from our hotel. The staff was outstanding. Could not have been friendlier or more attentive. Were from San Francisco so know great Italian. Would go back in a minute.
Great food. We started with the bruschetta and had one of the chicken entrées and a pasta entrée. The pasta was similar to gnocchi, but less doughy. The sauce was a wonderful mixture of cream and tomatos with chicken. I would definitely order it again!
Our only negative, was the drunk in the crowd at the bar next to our patio table. That cannot be prevented by Asti's owners; however, it's something to keep in mind before you book a table on their patio.
Also, there was no acknowledgment that we were celebrating my wife's birthday, although I mentioned it on our reservation and when we arrive at the restaurant. Not a big issue, hiwever, this is probably not a restaurant for celebrating.
Girlfriend's birthday with four people attending. The chef made a cake (organized in advance) and they sang happy bday to her in Italian. Also gave us a great table for the occasion with excellent service. I had the bone in ribeye which could be the best steak I've ever had - extremely juicy and it was huge! Also had a great wine list, the Barolo was divine!
