Aspen Restaurant Ratings and Reviews
Menu is always interesting and food is very good - Someone back there knows how to cook. Try the Korean noodle bowl for lunch with a surprising amount of seafood on top of some very tasty noodles for only $14.00. Salads are usually very light on the dressing (needs more) and there are no salt & pepper shakers on the table which is unusual...You have to ask. Love the warm baguette with sweet butter and sea salt. Service is generally very good - Aspen is a frequent lunch spot for us.
We are residents of Old Saybrook and have been to Aspen many times since they opened several years ago in the Saybrook Country Barn building. The food is always changing and is very tasty and creative. They mix a very good drink (at least Manhattans and Martinis, which we were drinking). Service is very good and the atmosphere is subdued and comfortable. We sat next to the fireplace, which made it even nicer. Our friends had never been there and were very impressed. We intend to continue to dine there regularly.
From the atmosphere, to the menu, to the wine list and the staff, all are exceptional.
Stephan is lovely, he is always extremely professional, warm and accommodating. When asking for food substitutions, due to dietary restrictions, Stephan never makes me feel uncomfortable. We love dining at Aspen and frequent this restaurant.
Excellently prepared meals, however somewhat short on value. As a bread person, I had to ask three times to get table bread, unacceptable. When I finally enjoyed my serving of bread, it was too late to accompany my soup and salad. Also strange that none of the tables had salt nor pepper accutrements. I requested such and wondered if Chef somehow objected to their presence in light of his admittedly tastefull and well seasoned meal preparations. However, my tastebuds required some additional salt for my pea soup.
All in all, food and decor deserved 5-stars, but dedication to service was no better than 3.5-stars. I noticed the waiter skitting all over the dining room, attending to both far and near tables. Clearly this inhibited any ability to provide more personalized service as needed.
This was our first time dining at Aspen and would definitely go back. Menu was varied and interesting. I had the grilled romaine to start and the monk fish for my entre. Both were superb. Ambiance is contemporary and fresh. They were out of the 2 desserts we wanted to order so we skipped dessert. Server was adequate although a little gruff at the end of the evening as we were leaving --not sure why. Looking forward to our next dining experience at Aspen. I bet it will be nice with the fireplaces lit when the weather gets cold.
We had an ok experience due to one of our meals - a pork chop - served raw. When it was taken away by a manager since our server was busy our server stopped and asked “is everything perfect” not even realizing one of us didn’t have a dinner plate in front of him. Our other meals were good but our friend ate alone as his chop came out after we had eatten. They did apologize and take his meal off the menu but it just put a damper on the evening.
A great favorite of ours. The food is consistently well prepared and delicious (I am a fan of their small plate/appetizer menu as I like to leave room for dessert, which is well-worth the calories here). The staff is friendly and attentive. We always feel well-taken care of here. The ambiance is warm and inviting: the lighting is soft, the tables are at a comfortable distance and you can carry on a conversation with your dinner partner without shouting. Wish it was closer to home but the half-hour drive has never made us think twice.
Aspen was a little noisy even though not nearly all the tables were occupied. The Octopus Carpaccio was a great first bite, but I was looking for a little more octopus. The wine list was excellent with choices over a wide price range. The least expensive Pinot Noir was very good. The best part for me was my roasted duck breast, which was prepared perfectly -- the best I've had, and my wife loved her vegetarian dish -- cavatelli pasta.
I was visiting Old Saybrook with my daughters over the past weekend. We wanted to have a nice dinner and needed a spot that would offer gluten free options. Aspen was perfect. The food and service were both excellent. Johanna was friendly but not intrusive. She made suggestions about what would be best off the GF menu and she was right. We all enjoyed our dinners and had a wonderful evening. I would definately return there if I were in the area.
We went to Aspen for the first time on Tuesday September 19th on the occasion of our 30th wedding anniversary. The restaurant was beautiful with understated elegance. The staff was attentive without being intrusive. We ordered some prosecco and the waiters brought out some wonderful bread and whipped and coarsly salted butter. We ordered salads which were very good. My wife had steak and I had the duck. Both were delicious. After dinner we lingered over the yummy desserts below. We will definitely be coming back!
Our favorite spot to bring guests to Old Saybrook.
Has yet to disappoint, great drinks and wine list and daily specials that are creative, thoughtful and delicious. While not cheap this place is not crazy expensive . We have come to know the staff as well and they are all wonderful
We had been to Aspen's several times before, both with small and large groups. This evening it was later than usual as we were picking someone up at the train from NYC, but we had a reservation. Our meals were good, but not up to par with our previous experiences, perhaps because it was late? We also felt rushed by the service staff since they wanted to leave for the evening, but other than that they were very friendly and efficient. Bottom line was this evening will not dissuade us from going back another night since we've otherwise had great dinners.
Went for our anniversary and had a very good meal. The grilled romaine salad was excellent as was the short rib appetizer. Scallop main dish with carrot puree was flavorful, but would have liked to see larger scallops which would have allowed for a more tender preparation with better texture. Service is consistently friendly and very good. The wine list was sparse and slightly expensive.
Celebrated our 60th anniversary, wanted something special. After reading reviews we were skeptical - too many complained of poor service and food. Our experience was just the opposite (this was our first Aspen dinner experience, we'd had lunch there in the spring), both service and food excellent. Good crowd but noise level low. Food portions just right - not huge. Several good restaurants in Saybrook area, we think this is one of the best.
Terrible server ruined what otherwise could have been a positive experience. Initially arrived early for our reservation and were warmly greeted when we asked if we could either dine before our reservation time or enjoy a drinks at the bar before being seated(ever so kind hostess welcomed us to do either). After pleasant pre-meal cocktails at the bar we then moved to our table when the experience went downhill thanks to the carefree(or more accurately could "care less"), inattentive and largely absent server Stephan. While we knew how we wanted the meal to progress after expressing our intent to him(a couple of courses each before our mains) this was not in the cards as both Stephan and the first appetizers were nowhere to be found(actually he seemed more attached to the bar than we were just prior). He could have bothered to offer more wine, a brief check-in, or at least an indication that the appetizers would arrive in due time(to note: the dining room tables and bar patrons seated after us were being served throughout our own awkward wait). We experienced more of an interaction with the food runners than with our supposed "server" and were especially miffed that the other far more proficient servers tending to the rest of the dining room were more pleasant, intuitive/attentive, or simply more vested and aware of what might be needed(customary acts of asking how the food was throughout or simply informing us of the soup of the day or seeing that glasses were filled and plates were cleared). We cut the anticipated meal short by moving straight to our entrees without a mid-course of desired small plates/additional appetizers due to what was occurring thus far and finished very much on a down-note from what we were hoping to experience as patrons of the nearby Kate theater & having had positive feedback to offer to others based on prior visits. Needless to say we were left very disappointed and walked pass the same bar on the way out where we should have stayed.
