I have been to the restaurant several times and have had a good meal with good service. Unfortunately this last experience was rather disappointing. Several minor things during the meal but the most annoying was when my dinner entrée was thrown out instead of boxed up to take home as I had requested. When I inquired about it I was made to feel as if I were somehow to blame. I seriously doubt whether we will be going back .
Very nice restaurant. Eclectic menu with good healthy choices in addition to some great out of the ordinary options . The lobster bolognese was delicious and a nice size portion. My husband had the pork chop and it was a good 1” chop with apples, fall vegetables and a mashed sweet potato.
Very good value here. We had a very nice lunch and the selections were all in the $15-20 range. Beautiful dining room. Property is close to a busy intersection , so the view from our table wasn't the best part of the experience. Servers were very helpful.
The food was excellent! The ambiance was similar to Liv's Oyster Bar and Fresh Salt, but it was extremely loud.
My husband and I went to Aspen on a Friday night before a show at the Kate. We shared the mussels to start, which were perfectly cooked and seasoned. I had the scallops, which were delicious. My husband had the filet, which he also thoroughly enjoyed. Excellent service and quality food.
First time at Aspen. The food was very good, both in taste and presentation. Can’t wait to go back!
Everything was delicious. Would definitely go back!
Great food and service: however, the no-go for me was the crammed seating in the dining area which is also in the same room as the bar. Much too noisy to hear my wife on the other side of the table. We had to raise our voices in order to be heard. I will not return, which is unfortunate since everything else was very good.
We all thoroughly enjoyed Aspen. It's a beautiful restaurant and all of the food is delicious. Highly recommend to all....(I would consider our entire group of six critical diners and everyone was thrilled with Aspen!)
We thoroughly enjoyed our dinner. Will definitely go back.
The food was fantastic!
It was our anniversary and they seated us in a cosy corner table. We started with fried oysters and a grilled hearts of Romaine salad. For entrees my wife ordered the Stonington scallops and I had Lobster Bolognese, both were mouth watering. So good.......... Can't wait to go back!
Great food. Great service. Didn't "wow" me but certainly no complaints.
Food was great. Service was perfect. Thank you Hunter! You were awesome!
Always a pleasure eating at Aspen!
Love the small plates that are always available.
We went on Christmas Eve. I wasn't sure what food or service would be like on a holiday but both were excellent. It was a great experience!
We had such a nice evening on Christmas Eve 2016 that we decided to go to Aspen again this year (2017) and we were not disappointed. Menu includes something for everyone.
Aspen is reliably good. All three of us enjoyed our dinners very much. The gluten-free dishes noted on the menu make Aspen a very good place for those who, through choice or necessity, want to avoid gluten. We ordered a dessert for the table that was just ok--the gluten-free options are not noted or as plentiful as the main menu. However, we will continue to frequent Aspen for its other excellent offerings.
Service was terrible! We had a reservation. Sat for 15 minutes before anyone even came to take our drink order. Waiter said that we weren’t his table. Never got better. Was 35th wedding anniversary.
Nice section of food and drinks. Great food and service.
Delicious meal in a beautiful restaurant
A consistently decent place for dinner with good food and dependable service.
Enjoyable location at the Saybrook Country Barn with innovative small plates/tapas often enjoyed with one of their many wines by the glass. This visit our service exceed my expectations. Our waiter and the back staff were right on point. Duck was cooked perfect! This is a great go-to if you are visiting this quaint town.
Cocktail was weak; entrees served at room temperature, not hot. Salads were very good.
Aspen was visited after a performance at The Kate and the food , the service , the atmosphere enhanced the joy experienced at The Kate .
Menu is always interesting and food is very good - Someone back there knows how to cook. Try the Korean noodle bowl for lunch with a surprising amount of seafood on top of some very tasty noodles for only $14.00. Salads are usually very light on the dressing (needs more) and there are no salt & pepper shakers on the table which is unusual...You have to ask. Love the warm baguette with sweet butter and sea salt. Service is generally very good - Aspen is a frequent lunch spot for us.
Had to schedule business dinner with a colleague from out of state. All impressed with venue, food and service.
Excellent service! Nice ambiance and delicious food!
Loved our waitress and food was excellent! Definitely good for fine dining and special occasions!
This was my third visit to Aspen in the last six weeks, and I’ll be back. Why? Excellent food, service, and atmosphere — and the menu features unusual dishes that are visually artistic.
We are residents of Old Saybrook and have been to Aspen many times since they opened several years ago in the Saybrook Country Barn building. The food is always changing and is very tasty and creative. They mix a very good drink (at least Manhattans and Martinis, which we were drinking). Service is very good and the atmosphere is subdued and comfortable. We sat next to the fireplace, which made it even nicer. Our friends had never been there and were very impressed. We intend to continue to dine there regularly.
The food and service were amazing! My husband got the scallop dish and I got the lobster over egg noodles. Delish! Ambiance and service perfect! Wine list extensive and desserts great!
From the atmosphere, to the menu, to the wine list and the staff, all are exceptional.
Stephan is lovely, he is always extremely professional, warm and accommodating. When asking for food substitutions, due to dietary restrictions, Stephan never makes me feel uncomfortable. We love dining at Aspen and frequent this restaurant.
Excellently prepared meals, however somewhat short on value. As a bread person, I had to ask three times to get table bread, unacceptable. When I finally enjoyed my serving of bread, it was too late to accompany my soup and salad. Also strange that none of the tables had salt nor pepper accutrements. I requested such and wondered if Chef somehow objected to their presence in light of his admittedly tastefull and well seasoned meal preparations. However, my tastebuds required some additional salt for my pea soup.
All in all, food and decor deserved 5-stars, but dedication to service was no better than 3.5-stars. I noticed the waiter skitting all over the dining room, attending to both far and near tables. Clearly this inhibited any ability to provide more personalized service as needed.
This was our first time dining at Aspen and would definitely go back. Menu was varied and interesting. I had the grilled romaine to start and the monk fish for my entre. Both were superb. Ambiance is contemporary and fresh. They were out of the 2 desserts we wanted to order so we skipped dessert. Server was adequate although a little gruff at the end of the evening as we were leaving --not sure why. Looking forward to our next dining experience at Aspen. I bet it will be nice with the fireplaces lit when the weather gets cold.
I come to Aspen frequently when the occasion fits the venue & its consistently good
pleasant staff , tasty good in a comfortable ambiance
We had an ok experience due to one of our meals - a pork chop - served raw. When it was taken away by a manager since our server was busy our server stopped and asked “is everything perfect” not even realizing one of us didn’t have a dinner plate in front of him. Our other meals were good but our friend ate alone as his chop came out after we had eatten. They did apologize and take his meal off the menu but it just put a damper on the evening.
A great favorite of ours. The food is consistently well prepared and delicious (I am a fan of their small plate/appetizer menu as I like to leave room for dessert, which is well-worth the calories here). The staff is friendly and attentive. We always feel well-taken care of here. The ambiance is warm and inviting: the lighting is soft, the tables are at a comfortable distance and you can carry on a conversation with your dinner partner without shouting. Wish it was closer to home but the half-hour drive has never made us think twice.
Once we found our way in, everything was great. Our server, Hunter, was attentive and helpful, the atmosphere was warm and pleasant and the food was wonderful. Save room for dessert - the bread pudding was amazing.
Aspen was a little noisy even though not nearly all the tables were occupied. The Octopus Carpaccio was a great first bite, but I was looking for a little more octopus. The wine list was excellent with choices over a wide price range. The least expensive Pinot Noir was very good. The best part for me was my roasted duck breast, which was prepared perfectly -- the best I've had, and my wife loved her vegetarian dish -- cavatelli pasta.
