Arugula - Permanently Closed Ratings and Reviews
3 parties were turned away at the door, ours included.....thought maybe a chef called out. Hostess running crazy. Have been here many times, never was it this like this before. We left to dine elsewhere. Next day there's a post online Arugula closed its doors after 6 1/2 years.....wish they gave some notice. Wasted 45 minute trip. Very sad because not only was the food superb, the ambiance was great. Just sorry it didn't work out.
The food was delicious and the prices are reasonable. The restaurant was full with some large parties as well as family dining. The noise level was a little high but overall it was a good experience. This was our second visit and we will return again. The service was good and our server was knowledgeable about the menu options.
The food at Arugula is always excellent. Our waitress didn't come to our table until we'd been sitting for close to 20 minutes. The salad came before the appetizers and there was close to a 20-30 minute wait time between each course. We were there for two hours. If the food wasn't so good, it may have been our last trip there. I am hoping they were just short staffed in the kitchen and with the wait staff.
The food was delicious and creative. We were concerned at first because the menu was very limited and somewhat gourmet. When our waitress came to tell us about the many specials, we were then very pleased with the choices. The best calamari I've ever tasted!
We were a party of 3 adults and our reservation was at 5PM. No waiting, hot food and pleasant service.
Having been here and enjoyed it in the past, I was looking forward to another great experience. So, this wa especially disappointing. We arrived to an almost empty restaurant and yet it took an inordinate time to place our orders. Calamari was soggy. Food service was slow. Food was warm, not hot. Had to ask twice for a check.
Won't be back. Won't be recommending.
My husband and I decided to go back to Arugula after not going for about two years due to a problem we had with a very rude and unprofessional hostess. We generally love the food there and have even used them to cater a party that we had at our home so we thought we would give them another try on our night out. Fortunately, there was no issue with the hostess that evening, but the service was extremely slow. I don't necessarily blame our server; I think it may have been the kitchen because they were clearly having problems. My husband ordered the meatball appetizer, which he loves, and the meatballs were still cold in the middle and had to be sent back. While that was happening, the couple next to us had to send an order of veal saltimbuca back because it was cold! My husband had ordered that as his entree and guess what--his came out cold too!! If they already had one come back you would think that it wouldn't happen again in less than an hour! The server was obviously embarrassed and was nice enough to have the veal taken off our check. We have been to this restaurant several times before and despite the one bad experience with the hostess we usually have a great experience and wonderful food. I am going to chalk this up to a bad night--all restaurants have them--and I am sure that we will give them another try in the near future.
Food was delicious like the last time we were there. Went with friends that had never been before and they enjoyed it as well! The service could have been a little better.... we would have liked a little more attention from the server and maybe a smile. We will definitely be back.
Another fantastic meal at Arugula.
We stayed with their meatballs in their fantastic sauce as an appetizer but this time added their special Brussels sprouts. If they offer this when you dine get them. They deep fry the sprouts to a light crispy texture and drizzle a balsamic reduction that was incredible. A must! I went with a special dinner lightly breaded Chicken breast topped with eggplant and melted mozzarella with a sauce and a light pesto drizzle on one side. Woth an in life's linguini in red sauce. It was a big portion and could only eat half. Made for great left overs.
My wife went off menu and asked if they could make a Cioppino since it looked like they had all the ingredients based on other options. They obliged with a seafood filled dish of mussels, scallops, shrimp in a great red sauce with a slightly larger pastina type pasta. We finished sharing a pumpkin bread pudding with gelato and whipped cream.
Nick the Chef Owner takes incredible pride in his work and delivers time and time again with great preparations that have great flavors and combinations that keep us coming back.
Took my wife to arugula for her birthday. The ambiance is nice for Jersey. Be prepared to spend at least 2 hours there as the service is exceptionally slow and meal preparation must be 1 guy doing everything. If the food was excellent, I wouldn't mind, yet that is not the case. Start with the pre-meal bread. To best describe it, imagine a package of rolls from shop rite. Now imagine them in a basket on your table at what is supposed to be a nice restaurant. The rolls were awful. I don't know what else to say about the bread, very disappointing. I ordered the "stuffed" pork chop. Now, focus on "stuffed". I imagined it would be "stuffed" with the cheeses, herbs, the stuffing because that is what it says on the menu. Sadly, I was mistaken. It is not stuffed. It is just placed underneath the chop. The lobster bisque was ok as was the anti pasta plate. My wife ordered some seafood pasta dish she said was fine, but to be honest I was so disappointed with cheap terrible rolls and NOT stuffed pork chop, that I waited almost 90min for, it wouldn't matter to me if the rest of the food is delicious, I'd never go back.
It doesn't matter if the food was the best ever cooked (it wasn't), the service is so terrible that there is no reason to ever go back there. Friday night and there were 7 tables with 2 waitresses and manager/host and still took 20 mins to get water when we were seated. Dinner for 2 took 2.5 hours and not in a good way, way to long between courses. Never refilled water, asked 4 times to 2 different people for bread, by the time the bread came the broth was cold. It got to the point where we were looking for the cameras because it had to be a joke.
There must be a new owner, I have been here many times over the last few years. It went from full blown classic Italian menu then to a small plate menu (which was fantastic) and now there is a very limited menu and the food is nothing to rave about. This place was a great neighborhood gem in a strip mall, now it's just a sad shell of itself. I don't think it will be open much longer, I give it 6 months. It's a shame we really used to like it here.
Had the Farm to Fork menu everything was delicious. However, the service was very slow. Waited forever in between each course. It was not a busy night. Maybe 7 tables in the whole restaurant were occupied. Took over 3 1/2 hours to recieve all our courses. Wouldnt return due to the waiting.
We were there on Tuesday fr restaurant week. It was busy . Friendly service, but a bit slow due to the number of tables.
The biggest issue we had was choosing what to order from the special menu... It all looked good.
course 1. We chose the scallops (a $4 up charge). They were perfect. The Brussel Sprouts were also wonderful, the perfect char on them
course 2 Was the pumpkin/butternut squash It was great, a bit sweet but creamy and smooth... A Winner!
course 2 was the chicken breast and the pork... both were tender and juicy.
The deserts that evening were tiramisu and pumpkin "cannoli" were both a sweet ending to the dinner.
The Fall Harvest menu on line differed with the menu we were presented. It was still good and worth the trip.
