What a difference a year makes! The last time we dined here the place was full, the pace bustling, the service attentive and knowledgeable, the food inspired as compared to our recent experience. No one was there on Mother's Day night but the music was so loud that we couldn't hear the staff and vice versa. They were out of an ale but our server wasn't aware of the fact until I had ordered;however, she quickly brought a couple similar samples. The staff were not as sartorially sharp as a year ago. But we were hopeful the food remained superb. The kale sald was substantial enough to share with crisp greens but very lightly dressed. It was missing a salty element. The fish and chips, supposedly Best In Town, was disappointing. It was mostly batter with very scant fish. And what was there was dried like jerky. Would have sent it back if not for our pending theater time. The chips over shadowed the fish. They were thick cut and golden brown. My companion's steak, also "best", was cooked more rare than specified drenched in thick country gravy. The broccoli rabe was perfectly cooked.
Overall disappointing. Unfortunately, I do not see a rosy future for Argyll.
Wanted to love this meal, particularly the lamb burger but it was so mediocre in flavor and such a dry bun. Oh well, never again for that. Two diners liked the fish and chips. Another got gnocchi with some sort of barbque pork on it, not good, don't go there.
The selection of single malt scotches and of whiskies is prodigious.
The food had some uneven qualities, but the positives were noteworthy. The kale salad was unique and fresh, the salmon rilletes were unique and tasty. Server was very friendly, ambiance was inviting.
This is one of our favorite restaurants in Denver. We have never had a bad meal here, and it deserves as much praise as it gets. Standout options... Fish and Chips (hands down, the best you will ever have), the whole fried cornish hen, and the lamb burger. All are upscale, gourmet versions of classic dishes. You will not be disappointed.
Unusually warm weather made sitting outside pleasant and I enjoyed a local vodka martini. Once we were inside, we asked to be moved because the table we were given had blinding sun, but the second table, behind the bar was very noisy - too noisy to actually talk to each other. The music was also too loud. The lamb burger was cooked to perfection, but the hard bun and all the other stuff on the burger drowned out the taste of the lamb. The chicken salad was too small for a dinner salad, but it was good. The white wine was okay, but the red wine, a Pinot Noir, was not very good - probably from a bottle that had been open too long . Did not send the wine back, should have, but also left the glass behind mostly full. 1st time to the new location, disappointed, because we liked Argyll when you were in Cherry Creek!
Argyll was a lot of fun--they have a huge selection of spirits, including whiskeys, ryes, bourbons, rums, tequilas, gin, and more. Great cocktails and good wine list to boot.
The food was a Scottish-themed take on bar food, including things like Scotch Eggs and fabulous brussels sprouts. One of our party needed to be gluten-free, and they did try to accommodate her. One thing had to be sent back when it arrived with a sauce that was thickened with flour, but the rest was nicely done, and they were lovely about sending the dish back.
If you are a drinker or love Scottish fusion bar food, I'd recommend Argyll. The staff is a pleasant and fun, the atmosphere is great, and the spirits menu is ten kinds of fabulous!
We've been to Argyll before and the fish and chips were fantastic. Not so last Monday - different chef? Only one piece of fish where usually two perfectly fried pieces are served, and this single piece was dripping grease. The triple fried french fries were uncooked in the middle and not hot. These were the most divine steak fries in town the last few times we visited.
Waitress was attentive and wonderful. View from the enclosed patio onto 17th Avenue was
delightul; it's particularly pretty when it's snowing.
We took my husbands dad here for his birthday. Service was amazing from the very beginning. It was a bad snow and the valet was fantastic. So friendly and even told us to go back in and stay warm while he got the car.
Our waiter was awesome, drinks were tasty and well done, and when the food came we were all blown away at how delicious the Shepards pie was. We will be back soon!
My wife and I decided to go here for our special 2016 New Years Eve dinner since we did last year and had a nice time. However, this year ended up being a big disappointment.
First, there was no Valet as promised by their details so we had to drive around the block looking for street parking. It was freezing cold so we had counted on Valet as part of our full New Years experience. This really frustrated me right from the start.
Then what really ruined the experience was that they decided to only do a price fix menu, no options from their typical menu. This is NOT how they did it last year and they did not communicate this at all for this year. There was NO note within Open Table about the price fix meal and NOTHING on their website. I felt tricked, once we sat down we were kind of stuck and could not get the items from their usual menu that we planned and looked forward to getting.
To then top it all off, the price fix food was mediocre at best and WAY over priced for it's quality. The duck egg roll app was a little gamey and before we could even finish them our main entree's came out. The short rib entree was room temperature, a little dry, and just not that interesting of a dish. So not only were we let down by the lack of a full menu, the meal we HAD to choose was just not that great. I will say the bread pudding desert was VERY good so it was nice to leave on a decent note.
I am just so disappointed with the experience and suggest to everyone that if they plan to eat here on any sort of holiday, I'd call in advance to make sure they are not going to spring some over priced average quality price fix meal on you.
Waitress was very new to waiting tables, didn't read the specials. Pricey sandwhiches that don't include the price of sides. The mimosas had very little champaign. And the sun was so hot blasting through the windows that even though it 10°outside we were sweating. The manager was very nice and willing to listen to us and promised a better experience next time.
Not sure what is going on at this restaurant. Food is pretty good overall -- but now i understand why so many restaurant owners are complaining about not being able to find good help. The waitress we had was very nice and tried hard -- but was literally completely clueless. Took us 15 minutes after being seated to get a drink -- but i did not feel too bad since the couple next to us had been in 15 minutes ahead of us and still did not have one.
I asked her -- do you have oysters tonight?
"yes we do"
"what kind do you have"
"ahhhhh, raw ones..."
"no, what kind are they?"
"ahhhhh, on the half shell"
"let me try one more time, what kind are they, you know, where did they come from?"
"i will check....(10 minutes later).... Virginia"
OK -- i get it -- no more trick questions....
My wife's dinner arrived when she was half way thru her appetizer -- and was basically room temp by the time she was ready to eat it
My dinner -- the hangar steak which the waitress identified as tenderloin -- was another 10+ minutes in arriving after that --
Too bad -- food was really pretty good but this restaurant is having terrible service and timing problems -- and it was not just us -- talked to 3 other parties while we were waiting on the valet and all said pretty much the same thing.
The restaurant business is tough these days especially -- I hope AWB can right its ship going forward.
The service was not very good. We had a reservation. We had to track down someone to take our order and kept having to ask for stuff. The waitress never apologized and we had multiple servers it seemed like. They got our wine order wrong. The food was delicious, but need work on their service.
Service was fine. Server brought fresh coffee when he had a delay getting milk for my coffee. Bummer they have milk, but not cream for coffee. It doesn't cut the bitterness the same.
Mushroom toast was not as good as the first time I came here. The mushrooms were different kinds and assorted, which I liked, but the whole thing was kind of wet. I dislike soggy bread and wet mushrooms. A lot. The pate flavor wasn't that strong , either.
The corned beef was delicious, but there were maybe 8 little chunks on the plate, same with the potatoes. Pretty meager and kind of chunky for a hash. Mustard sauce was nice. Eggs cooked well.
The kale salad was probably my favorite, which doesn't say much for the rest of the food. Light and crisp.
The deviled eggs were okay in flavor, but way too cold. We let them sit til the end of the meal after eating the first two.
I'd come back to try dinner, but my two brunch experiences have been exceedingly mediocre.
Saturday evening dinner with a friend. No wait, seated quickly, great friendly staff. A DJ was set up and started playing at 8:00pm but not too loud. I ordered a delicious whiskey cocktail and the dinner special - a pork shank with roasted veggies and gravy - everything was delicious!!! Can't wait to go back and try their brunch.
I was really not impressed with the food or service. I ordered the Fish & Chips which was supposed to be one of the best choices. The fish was not cooked all the way through. When I told the waitress she offered to get a piece of fish but my appetite was already ruined. They did nothing to try to make it right.
We recently went to Argyll and probably had too high of expectations for it. The steak and mussels were very good. The fish n chips and several uninspiring appetizers were not. The drinks were great when we could get the attention of staff who seemed preoccupied the day we went. Probably won't rush back for dinner but definitely a great spot to get drinks.
I was expecting a lot more from this place.
We show up with a reso and get showed to our seats. We wait around 5 minutes to have a trainee come up to us and introduce himself and his trainer who was to be our server. Very nice. He gave us waters and headed off.
We figure out what we want to drink & wait while we chat. 15 minutes later our server finally stops by to take our drink order. I decide it's probably gonna be one of those nights & we order everything at once just to make sure our food comes at a reasonable time. We got the "2015 Denvers best Fish and Chips", Mac & cheese and a scotch egg to start.
We ordered a few of the signature cocktails as well.
Now the drinks came in and decent amount of time and we're pretty good. Though at their $11-13 per drink price, I honestly would prefer to get drinks before elsewhere. But we were fine cause it was a night out and why not. The trainer brought by some house made chips and this delicious vinegar reduction sauce.
Now these chips and sauce are the reason there are 2 stars and not 1 for the food. They were great. They were the perfect little snack while we waited on our scotch egg.
A little while later we get the app. It was pretty good! Very flavorful! Again a little pricey for what it is but whatever. The yolk was perfect.
While we're still eating 1/2 a scotch egg each & our dinners showed up.
Mac and cheese: tasteless. I had to add salt and lemon a few times just to extract some flavor. For $13 Mac and cheese it better be oozing with flavor. Not to mention the portion size is TINY! I didn't even finish it because it wasn't worth it to and I didn't wanna take it home either.
The famous fish and chips were not good. The batter wasn't crispy enough and it seems as thought they forgot to season the fish or batter at all. So disappointed and yet again, tiny portion.
Overall I barely remember the server cause I saw him twice and the helper only 3 times. The food was poor considering the price and portion.
We went to Argyll for the Passport Program and loved the staff and the drinks, so thought we would try the food. Once again, the drinks and staff were great, but that is where it stopped ... kind of.
Everything seemed slightly expensive (and this is considering we often spend over 100/150 on a meal and drinks for 2 of us elsewhere, so we are not necessarily thrifty diners. I got the tea ramen... I took a risk on this, and I realize this, so that is on me. However the noodles were so underdone it was a risk I would not wish on anyone. When I asked the waitress, she checked with the kitchen and came back just stating they were egg noodles. I guess egg noodles are underdone? So, I recommend steering clear. My spouse got the steak, and although it was the best steak he has had in awhile it was literally the smallest thing I have ever seen. Just be warned. We had to go out to eat AFTER we went out to eat. I usually will try anyplace twice, but this was just so odd, I am not sure I can. I hear the fish and chips are great... maybe I should have stuck with the obvious.
I live in the neighborhood, and want them to succeed, but with so many other places on 17th that have wowed me in one sitting, it may be hard to go back. Please do not take my word only. I am sure many people love Argyll or they wouldn't still be in business - just go educated...
Do what you need to, just trying to save people from a $70 tab, followed by another $10 fast food tab.
I had the fish & chips, which were very tasty. The portion was good-sized and the batter light. The "mushy peas were interesting. My dinner companion described them as "pea guacamole." The whiskey cake was delicious (you could definitely taste the whiskey!). Next time I will ask them not to heat it.
I made reservations for a Thursday night, there was no need to the place was dead. Service was good, some of the servers were on point, others were just there. The food was okay. We had a pretzel to start which was awesome, for the main course we had the macaroni and cheese which was somewhat dry and unimpressive. They do have a large range of spirits.
Contrary to my expectations, Argyll Whiskey Beer is a forgettable, run-of-the-mill neighborhood restaurant. Owned and operated by the previous owner of Le Grand in downtown Denver, I was expecting a moderately upscale experience similar to the ones that I enjoyed at Le Grand. What I got instead was pedestrian food that they tried unsuccessfully to improve upon. The biggest disappointment was the lack of attention from our server. We arrived in plenty of time to have dinner before going to a concert at the Pepsi Center. After ordering, we sat for an hour with no food and empty bar glasses from our initial order - while other diners arriving after us were receiving their orders - due to 1.) the server's complete and utter inattention, and 2.) the fact that he forgot to even ring in our food order. It was not as though the place was really busy when we arrived; much to the contrary. When the food finally DID arrive, it was prepared incorrectly. Joel was managing and did a superb job of trying to correct the situation (short of firing the server on the spot, which he probably would have been wise to do), but this is a place to which we will not return.
We were the only people on the patio for brunch (table of 5) and were basically ignored. We ordered the bottomless Mimosas and it ended up that we should have just paid for a single mimosa each as the waitress was so scarce that the dollars did not work in our favor. We were in a hurry to get somewhere else so did not complain but this was super disappointing. The inside was not busy either so unsure why the waitress ignored us the entire time we were there.
I would try this again as the food was great. (amazing French Toast). But would struggle with going out of my way when there are so many good restaurants in Denver. If we happen to be in the neighborhood again I will go but could not recommend to anyone else as I do not know if the service was a fluke or if that is just the way it is.
The food is inventive and tastes good. They also have a fantastic selection of whiskeys and wines. The waiter was very informative and helpful, however, it took a very very long time to get our food after ordering even though the restaurant was only half-full. If they could speed things up, this restaurant would be fantastic.
Close to my neighborhood, choose this spot bc they had a big sign stating "best steak for 5280 2015" stick it Elways.
Went for a special occasion on a Saturday night at 8pm, place was dead, few customers, VERY limited menu, poor service, small portions, steak was WAY over rated left hungry , mussels not open, strange liquor flavor.
We love the Argyll! The in-house made sausages are so yummy! Try the duck mousse and the lamb burger as well. And the triple cooked chips are delicious!! The whiskey selection, along with the beer and cocktail menu make for an enjoyable evening. Bring a sweater because it's a little chilly inside, but the ambience is nice!
Great outdoor seating accompanied by a delicious duck sausage and broccolini! My friend had the kielbasa with cranberry and a kale salad, also super yummy. and to cap it off we enjoyed the banoffee dessert. Save room, it's seriously worth every calorie. Enjoy.
We were staying in the 5 points neighborhood and were looking for a nice spot nearby. Decided to try it out because of the outdoor seating. Service was quick. We ordered beer, wine, apps and dinner. All was fabulous. We split the scotch egg - delicious. The fish and chips is also very good. A great neighborhood gem!
