Good creative version of Mexican food. But the portions were embarrassingly small. Two mini fish tacos, although tasty and fresh, could not be considered a lunch portion. We tried to fill up on chips and guacamole. I had out of town guests and they picked up the tab which made it worse. I thought maybe this was supposed to be bar snacks but it was described as lunch. The other dishes like the rolled tortilla dish (name?) was really tiny. The outdoor seating was pleasant.
We had an early dinner at Arguello after a day of visiting museums. Located on the edge of the Presidio, this is Traci des Jardins' Mexican restaurant. It's very casual and seems to cater to families local to the area. Huge selection of Tequilas. Menu is rather limited and the portions are enormous. We started with some salads; we had not finished the salads when the mains were brought (excellent snapper; enormous chicken dish). Best chips and dip we've ever had. If you're looking for authentic Mexican cuisine in a casual venue, this is the place for you.
Everything tasted great except that our food was cold. Will go back but remind wait staff to deliver the food hot.
What a surprise to find such a wonderful location and super healthy Mexican food. Love this place!
Great food and great experience
We got in on a Mexican holiday, so, we may have had extra goodies not always offered. It was all so great— the staff, food, service, the setting everything was really great! We will be back.
Food is kind of overpriced and not that good.
This was a annual gathering of friends. Service and food were great even though the bar was extremely busy with a big event.
We had the new seasonal menu. Delicious fish tacos. Always a wonderful meal
Highlight | Margaritas & Guac: The margarita and guacamole were what you could get at any good restaurant. Downfall | Food & Cocktails: The food was over-priced and bland. Also, I have never been to a Mexican restaurant/eatery that did not serve Carne Asada tacos. Huge disappointment. Also, any drink besides the margarita did not have any flavor or was an odd mixture. Recommendation: If you are in the Presidio and want a quick snack and drink, get the margarita and chips with guacamole
Server was amazing and very accommodating. Pozole was a little colder than we would have liked and she gladly brought it back hotter. Great ambiance, great food.
Food & service were very good. Inside lack ambiance.
Arguello was perfect! The management was very flexible with our reservation and happy to accommodate our wishes. The setting was unique and historic. Service and food were excellent. I look forward to many future visits!
THE BEST!! Always a favorite!
I was very disappointed with the service. We were seated by the very front door next to a loud table. The place was practically empty at this time of day so there were plenty of other seats they could have given us. We had to ask for napkins and plates after our appetizer arrived. The couple of hostess that we asked because we couldn't find our waitress (again we were right by the front door) who were not busy other than texting on their cell phones seemed very annoyed to help. Our waitress immediately let us know the kitchen was closing and we need to order everything at one time yet everything was just very very slow....painfully slow to get. Our waitress was very nice but the rest of the staff was not. Most of all the food was very good. Everyone at the dinner agreed this would not be a place we would return with all the other great places to eat in SF.
Lovely setting. Wonderful history. Great exhibitions. Mediocre food. Outstandingly friendly and helpful servers.
We love the view, neighborhood, ambiance, and food. The margaritas are very good, though a tad pricy. Our latest visit to Arguello was a bit disappointing because of the service. An attentive service can make a big difference in a dining experience. I wondered if this server was new and still learning? In that case, she should have had someone shadow her.
The poor service was not enough to keep us from returning. I recommend everyone give it a try.
Next time we will sit on the lovely patio.
Always great at Arguello!
The food was tasty, the service was fine and the noise level was acceptable. Our table of four enjoyed the quesadillas, the mussels, the brussel sprouts, the potatoes and the spinach with mushrooms. All were nicely done with interesting flavors and ingredients. The service was prompt and courteous. The restaurant was not crowded so we had no difficulty talking. I would definitely go back as it is close with easy parking.
Sorry to say we were quite disappointed. We'd been looking forward to trying Arguello. The atmosphere is casual, but you get the feel of the old Presidio Officers Club. Our party of 3 was seated at a table for 6, which was odd. Our server was really pressing us to order everything at once. Having read previous reviews complaining that entrees came ahead of appetizers, we tried to stagger our cocktails, appies and dinner. This really seemed to aggravate our waitress. We had to ask for water 4 times, we were not offered a dessert menu and they seemed to rush us through the evening. Start to finish, we were out the door in an hour and 15 minutes. Food was good, but pretty pricey. Nothing terrible, but there are so many good spots in the city, I wouldn't go back.
The food was great but we struggled to get water and the waitresses attention the entire Time.
My hubby and I stopped by for lunch/brunch and it was delicious! The guacamole alone is worth the trip! Highly recco!!
My only real downside is that there was only one "super kid friendly option" which was french toast and it was not a huge portion) - would've been better if they at least had a plain quesadilla.
That said, all food was delicious - including chips and guacamole. My dish (CHILAQUILES, SALSA VERDE, AVOCADO CREMA, FRIED EGG) was so good i wished i could have eaten it all, but note it is CHIP HEAVY and i had just eaten a bunch of chips/guac beforehand....
Nice place for brunch - though a bit noisier than I'd hoped. Rain was in forecast so unfortunately we opted not to sit outside, which i would've preferred.
Good news was i erroneously left my Rx glasses there (dropped on the floor) - but they had them there the next day!
Pleasant Mexican food well prepared with care.
Amazing. Simple and amazing
We had a great meal at 8:00 pm and were the last table to leave. Staff was good and left us alone to socialize. Food was excellent, very tasty and fresh. Noise level was a bit too loud for my enjoyment. Pretty space.
To me, the hallmark of a good restaurant is the morale of its staff. These are a happy bunch, and that spirit is evidenced in Arguello's welcoming and attentive service, and in the fresh, flavor-forward food on the plate. For the uninitiated, the enthusiastic bar staff provides knowledgeable guidance through a mind-boggling tequila and mezcal selection. Arguello is housed in the beautifully restored, historic Officers' Club in the Presidio, surrounded by gorgeous landscaping, and the lush expanse of the Presidio itself. Oh yeah: parking!
They offer refried beans on menu but would not substitute them in a burrito in place of black beans?!
Chips too greasy
Waitress very nice but hostess seemed grumpy and disorganized.
The place was secluded and nice. The service was good. Food was good.
I will visit again and recommend it to my friends for sure.
Service and food was outstanding! Easy parking and my daughter and I were able to have clear conversations. Staff was very attentive and suggestive as it was our first time there. Would recommend Arguello to my friends.
Food and ambience were great! My only complaint....... we ordered a cocktail with meal. Meal came way before our cocktail...... shld be the other way around. Hate when that happens.
Drink or dine on the patio on a nice day
Had a great vegan meal here. Excellent service and food.
This restaurant is very crowded at lunchtime, but we went for dinner. What a terrific find! The restaurant has table service in the evenings and an extensive Tequila list. The food is authentic with some very unusual and very tasty offerings.
Both the service and the food was very good. The location at the Presidio was great being very relaxing and picturesque with a lot of history surrounding you. If you want to get out of the busy and hectic urban scene and avoid traffic and parking hassles, this is very nice place to eat and enjoy the scenery of the Presidio. We will be going back.
A friend recommended Arguello and I was excited to give it a try. While the margarita's were quite good and the drink menu get's a solid thumbs up for a broad selection of tequilas and mezcal, the ambiance and the food were lacking. The restaurant felt tired. The lighting was too compact fluorescent, and the pseudo-rustic tables and chairs just felt mass-market and worn. It would be so much more fun with some authentic tables and truly mexican painted straw-seated chairs or something of that ilk. The food was okay, but overpriced for what it was. In a town where there are so many great taquerias and my favorite - Nopalito - Arguello really needs to up their game. They have all the potential to be something amazing, but sadly fall flat. As it stands, I suggest Arquello for chips & guac and a good margarita on the terrace for a beautiful end of day sunset in the Presidio.
Yummy alcoholic cold brew, amidst the beautiful Presidio forest. Great Mexican breakfast too.
We have tried Arguello about 5 times in the hopes that it has improved but every time we go we leave disappointed. The food is nothing special and it is quite expensive. The best thing is the guacamole with chips.
