AraOn Ratings and Reviews
Took my wife for her birthday and made a reservation and they knew the special occasion. Even though there were very few people in the entire place, the service was the worst o have experienced in decades. The food was average at best. I will never go back there.
Disappointed as I have been coming here for lunch for years. Fast, courteous service and good food. In and out in about 45 minutes which is perfect for a lunch work. Alas, on this visit it was in and out in almost one and a half hours - our food didn't come until over a half hour, and then we could not get our check and had to ask the greeter to get our check for us. I don't know what happened but it was a bad day and a big inconvenience for us as we were running up against scheduled conference calls. Will go back but hope this doesn't happen again.
Service and ambiance was wonderful. Unfortunately the menu was not. We came for Asian fusion and sushi. What we got were dishes that were foreign to us. We ordered “yellow tail” and were served a large grilled bone. It was the leftover fish from the sushi chef. We had others but we were not pleased with them. The only good dish was the Asian ceviche. We left after the appetizers. No dinner.
We dined in on Friday and it was not busy at all. However, for some reason we did not get a server and had a hard time ordering food and getting someone to ask for something. It's so odd that we did not even get a server at our table. Although the owner? came to us and took our order but still we waited so long and it was not pleasant. The food was good but a little overpriced for the size and quality. I used to come here once in a while but i would not come back for a while.
Wonderful restaurant in the Loop of downtown Chicago. We only had sushi, although there are several other options on the menu. My husband said it was the best sushi (maki rolls) that he's ever had. Also, we were given a complimentary appetizer and the chef, Jimmy, came to our table to make sure we were satisfied with everything. He then brought us another complimentary sample of another sushi. It is a bit pricey for sushi, but that is expected in this area of the city. Overall, a very good experience.
Took some colleagues here after a long work day. Incredibly fresh sushi, sashimi that was hand crafted beautifully. Every dish looked amazing and the fish was very fresh. The spicy tuna roll was my favorite appetizer; wish we would have ordered more. Scallops were cooked perfectly. The pear sorbet with berry soup was light and delicious; perfect finish to a fabulous meal. Will come back next time I'm in Chicago.
I've been to AraOn several times, both with friends and with clients, and it's always been a good experience. The food is delicious, the location is great, prices are reasonable. Generally speaking, service is quick. This time around, though, service was like molasses. We waited forever for our food and for our check. The whole thing took our group of 4 nearly an hour and a half to get through, when in the past I've done lunch in 45 min to an hour. It was incredibly frustrating. I hope this was just a fluke, otherwise, I will have to rethink coming here.
I love Japanese food and AraOn has a new take on it. It is a French-Japanese fusion that is not too over the top but adds a real distinctive taste to traditional Japanese Sushi and other Japanese foods. Really really liked it and recommend without hesitation. The Chef came to our table and we asked about one dish we had and he offered to show us another twist on it that is not on the menu and we loved it even more. Great place.
Went with my family after Hamilton which very close by. The free appetizer, spiced tuna bite, was delicious. The octopus and hamachi ponzu were also wonderful. The wait staff attentive and friendly. Definetly a place to go back. Duck dumplings were very good.
I have been looking for a good sushi restaurant in the Chicago loop that is also affordable and I found one in this gem! A friend and I came for lunch. We ordered the house salad as an appetizer. Warning- the dressing has a kick to it, but it was really good. A light and fresh start. For lunch we split the Cali Crunch and the Rainbow. Both were delicious and the perfect amount of food for two. I will definitely be coming back here for lunch.
This Pan-Asian restaurant is anything but standard. With food that is influenced by French flavors and an ambiance that is chic and trendy, AraOn is filled with fun surprises. There's a sushi menu for fish lovers, several meat options, and a ton of vegetables and sides -- including an excellent vegetarian sushi roll with sweet potato tempura, cucumber, avocado, oshinko, kampyo, asparagus, and sriracha.
I've been to AraOn a bunch of times; lunch and happy hour. This time around the restaurant was quite understaffed for the afternoon lunch hour. While waiting to be seated, I could see the hotel personnel arguing about some mix-up that happened with another party. Not a good sign, but we went ahead anyways. We had to wait for about 20 mins to get someone to wait at our table. Finally after calling on the busser, the hostess had to wait our table while handling her other role. The food itself was good and the hostess took care of us the best she could. So not the best experience this time around.
I usually love AraOn and I'm sure I'll be back but my meal this time was surprisingly disappointing. I ordered the chicken teriyaki bento box and my chicken was dry and overcooked. I sent it back with no big deal but the second batch came back less stringy but still somehow overcooked. I paid with no further complaints but I was super disappointed (not to mention still very hungry). It was definitely not worth the $25+ I paid so hopefully next time will be better but I'll be sure to stay away from the chicken teriyaki. :(
Prior to trying AraOn, I had read a number of reviews complaining about the quality of service, but took the chance that the food may be worthwhile. The other reviews proved to be accurate as it took 15 minutes for anyone to come over to take our order and over 40 minutes after that for the food to arrive. This isn't the ideal timeframe for a quick business lunch during the work day. After the long wait, we were served what could only be described as a poor excuse for Japanese food. Nothing that was included in the Bento box was enjoyable and I was forced to eat another lunch back at the office. Would strongly recommend avoiding this restaurant in such a great food city.
Our meal experience at AraOn was simply outstanding. We were late dining, which was a concern showing up at 8:20. Not a problem as we noted several other guests still seated and enjoying their meals and awaiting their sushi. Wait staff was prompt and assisted us with the menu and recommended the Shabu Shabu (simply described as Korean fondue). Owner Jimmy was fantastic and visited our table multiple times with complimentary bbq tuna sushi appetizers which were simply delicious. Our 10 year old daughter devoured three pieces on her own. The Shabu Shabu was fantastic and Jimmy personally explained, cooked, and served the Shabu at our table. An exceptional evening and great memory to share with others. We assured Jimmy we would be back next time in Chicago. P.S. leave your phone's off, be respectful, and enjoy the meal experience offered, it is well worth it.
I was very excited to try this restaurant with a lady I was seeing as we both love sushi and she had good experiences here in the past. I had never been here and thought the place looked nice and the food options were good. The ambiance was good and noise level low around late evening. With that being said, the service was.... horrible. My date and I sat at our table for roughly 20 minutes before even being offered water to drink, which was served by a bus boy and not even our waitress. I had wanted to order sake, though our waitress never even took our drink orders and instead went straight to food. After ordering a measly 4 rolls (a very simple sushi order for two people), we sat at our table for roughly 45 minutes before our food came out. Not only did they only prepare 3 of the 4 rolls we ordered, but the 3 we did get were misprepared with ingredients we specifically asked for them to take out (cucumbers on 2 and a replacement of raw salmon instead of smoked salmon on the third). Our waitress was almost impossible to get ahold of and quite frankly we almost walked out of the restaurant without paying. What I was hoping to be a nice date ended up being a rather frustrating experience overall. I will NOT be attending this restaraunt again.
