About AR Valentien at The Lodge at Torrey Pines
In our signature restaurant, A.R. Valentien, Chef Jeff Jackson showcases, fresh market driven seafood, meats, produce and dairy products.
The menu is determined and influenced by what is available at any given time during the various seasons. Certain farms have been commissioned to produce items specific to the Lodge. Local small fish and seafood companies who deal in regional Southern California and Baja "catches" are utilized, as well as other west coast purveyors.
Out of respect for the quality of the foodstuffs available, the cooking is somewhat restrained in order to take advantage of the natural flavors and textures of the ingredients.
Because of this more "hands off" approach and the use of simple seasonings, various olive oils, and intense broths and juices as flavoring mediums, the dishes retain their nutritional integrity as well.

Wonderful. We've eaten here several times. There are only 2 places in La Jolla that are reliably outstanding. This is one of them. Fresh ingredients, perfectly prepared. Great service. You're not rushed; lots of time between courses. If I could give more than 5 stars, I'd do it.
We went for what we thought would be a Sunday brunch/lunch at 11:15 prior to attending symphony in San Diego. Unfortunately, we were a few minutes early for lunch and were only able to order off the breakfast menu. I ordered salmon and avocado on toast and it was very good. My husband ordered eggs benedict with veal cheek, not knowing what to expect. It was not to his liking. Service was good but not as attentive as one might expect. We would probably try again but would try for dinner.

Lodge on the edge of a famous golf course is one of the most romantic San Diego places to dine.
I always feel special when dining here. The food is beautifuly presented and delicious. We even
got to see former President Obama play golf as an added surprise !
Food was beyond good, it was stunning. I grew up in the SD restaurant biz and we owned a couple steak houses. The Lodge brings back that classic SD upscale vibe of the 70's-80's but with a modern menu. My two kids 10 & 15 and I had the 28 day aged rib eye and wife had the duck. One thing to note is how they pair all of the different flavors, acids, textures, sweets and savory. I think most people will miss these subtleties, but if you have a palate that understands these complexities, you will be really well pleased and impressed. We started with the cheese plate which was enough for 3 of us who like cheese to be satisfied but not ruin the main. We ended with 3 desserts shared between 4 of us, all which were very good but not quite to the standard of their main menu. I'm just being picky here. We were surprised with two or three "compliments of the chef" surprises (Brocolini, Donut's and truffles and amazing corn bread muffins) Make sure you try the muffins. Service was great, slow to get the first course, but overall really good. They accidentally gave my wife gluten after we had discussed it with waiter so that was a bit of a bummer as we all ate and she waited 10-12 minutes to get her food. They were super cool about it and made up for it with the extras. We had a super loud family next to us, but not sure this is the norm. We spent $300.06 after tip for the for of us with no alcohol, but it was worth every penny if dining out and food is your thing. We will go back for sure. Thanks for a great experience.
This is our favorite restaurant in San Diego. We usually come three or four times a year for special occasions, like birthdays or anniversaries. The food is always great, and the service is outstanding. Ambiance is also great; low key, comfortable and relaxing. We both love the craftsman style of the lodge. If you come at the right time you can enjoy the sunset from the deck...I always suggest AR Valentian to friends looking for a great restaurant.
We received a personal call the day before confirming the reservation and was asked about seating preferences (inside please). The table was ready at 5:30 as reserved. Got a better
table by asking. Table service was superlative and unobtrusive. View was grand. The meal
was unrushed and beautifully prepared. Some new items on the menu..so we explored a
bit. No disappointments. The butternut squash soup had great body and flavor.
The osso bucco was succulent.
Wonderful food, neither intimidating nor boring and always very flavorful. Excellent service in a beautiful room. Quiet and dignified. Perfect for special occasions, out of town guests, romantic events, etc. We have been coming for many years, sometimes also staying at the wonderful Torrey Pines Lodge in which it is located.
Great location. Old world clubby atmosphere. Good was good , but three orders of halibut were overlooked and dry...not moist. The restaurant offered to recook. The bread and muffins were great. Best of all was the service. Our waiter, Bradford, did a great job.
Somewhat disappointed in the food, excellent service! Food portions have gotten smaller and accompaniments are minimal! Ordered gnocchi for an appetizer and extremely disappointed with portion size for the price-was planning to share but not enough to share! Ordered duck and was expecting confit but was advised that they ran out of confit with the Breeder;s Cup and changed the details of the menu but not the price. Confit is my highlight and very disappointed! Received menu that acknowledged our Anniversary, but did not acknowledge and offer any form of desert or other amenity for the occasion! Too bad, thought it was a place for special occasions, BUT no more!
Right up front, the food is incredible. I had 28 day aged ribeye, perfectly cooked. Melt in your mouth seasoning and texture. Wife had seared scallops, glistening in the middle, beautiful sear on top. Excellent wine pairings, tasting menu and cheese course available. Staff was friendly, service was prompt but not pushy. Cut the hassle, valet parking. Will go back again.
We do this restaurant for special occasions and they never disappoint. I really enjoy the service of all the people that work at the restaurant. Never to much but just the right amount of attention. We really enjoyed being outside to watch the sunset and when it got a little cool they had a blanket for my wife and heater for our table. The wine sommelier has got to be the best we have EVER experienced and I am done bring a bottom to dinner as he has some of the best wines. This was during the Breeder's Cup and they were very busy, but you had no idea as we didn't feel rushed. The wait staff was excellent and the duck was to die for.. Thanks for making it a very special occasion.
We had the Local Lunch which was exquisite. The bread was very high quality. I think it’s the best swordfish I’ve ever had. The cheesecake was so light, almost like chiffon, not too sweet & delicious. An unexpected treat arrived before we left, a raspberry truffle.
My friend was very, very please with her vegetarian plate, made to order. My pork shop was dry but I requested a sauce, and the chef was very accommodating. Also, I asked for sorbet that was not on the dessert menu but they had it. So ask if you have a special request.
We stayed at the Lodge for a mom/daughter staycation, so we decided to try their restaurant. They completely exceeded all of our expectations. The wait staff was super friendly and attentive and every singe dish was phenomenal. They had a great wine selection as well, which is always a plus :) Highly recommend coming here!!!
Great on all levels. The service is spot on. The kitchen usually sends out several free extras, including an amuse bouche, a vegetable side dish and a dessert plate that often includes warm mini-donuts. The Ceaser salad with little gem lettuces is a standout. The halibut never disappoints. The duck is flavorful and tender. The breads, baked on the premises, include wonderful biscuits and good sourdough. The roast chicken preparation is fantastic. I've never had a bad meal here. And the wine steward is the best -- knows his stuff and often introduces us to a great wine we hadn't tried before.

Das Essen zu hoch bewertet und wird dem Preis nicht wirklich gerecht.Unser Kellner war desinteressiert und lahm-den Wein haben wir uns selbst nachgeschenkt- untypisch der amerikanischen Gastfreundschaft. Wochen Voraus reserviert, ein milder Abend, gerne hätten wir diesen auf der Terasse verbracht und fragten nach einem Tisch draussen, es hiess alles reserviert- die vielen Tische waren aber immer noch frei als wir das Restaurant nach dem Essen verliessen. Schade....
A R Valentine is our choice time after time for an outstanding true dining experience. I have always chosen the "tasting menu" of four courses with wine and been delighted with what I received. Along with the outstanding ambience, golf course/sea view with sunset (if you are able to time it right), quiet that allows full conversation and outstanding service. It is truly a one of a kind.
