In our signature restaurant, A.R. Valentien, Chef Jeff Jackson showcases, fresh market driven seafood, meats, produce and dairy products.

The menu is determined and influenced by what is available at any given time during the various seasons. Certain farms have been commissioned to produce items specific to the Lodge. Local small fish and seafood companies who deal in regional Southern California and Baja "catches" are utilized, as well as other west coast purveyors.

Out of respect for the quality of the foodstuffs available, the cooking is somewhat restrained in order to take advantage of the natural flavors and textures of the ingredients.

Because of this more "hands off" approach and the use of simple seasonings, various olive oils, and intense broths and juices as flavoring mediums, the dishes retain their nutritional integrity as well.

We’ve come on special occasions and when the farm to table dinners were given prior to its cancellation. To our surprise, the food and the service were not what we had experienced before.

The initial server was nice enough but suddenly disappeared in the middle of our birthday meal celebration with no explanation from alternate staff who only showed up after waiting very long for someone to appear in the area that we were dining in.

The the sword fish and the red snapper were not very good. The fish did not taste fresh almost gamey. My wife and I did not want to ruin the birthday celebration in front of our celebrant. We were just happy enough to be together for the event.

This was an unfortunate experience from a restaurant that we always thought to be a reliable place of gathering and good food. It will be a while before we decide to come back.

We really enjoyed our long lunch at A R Valentien. Everything was good - food, service and ambience. All was done with finesse and it is easy to see why it is rated as one of the best restaurants in San Diego. It was simply a pleasure to dine here. I look forward to returning.

Slow table service...vegetables were overcooked...steak was average...nothing really outstanding except for the ambiance...donuts at the end of the meal, promised twice, deliver zero.

Service had an attutude for what proved to be average food. We had a reservation, but were not allowed a table by the window. YET THE TABLES BY THE WINDOWS REMAINED EMPTY, for the entire time we were in the restaurant.

Arrived early and seated right away. Seated outside since it was a nice day. Was handed a menu with a happy anniversary wish printed at the top with our names...great touch. The service, meal and ambiance were all exceptional. One of the best dining experiences I’ve ever had. Understated yet totally elegant.

This was our first visit to AR Valentien but it won't be the last. Our food, particularly my duck entrée, was great. Service was as good as I've had in San Diego, with special mention of the wine recommendations and attention from the sommelier.

Every year, we go to A.R. Valentien for a special occasion. Without exception, the meal is outstanding and the service comparably great. It is worth every penny which, by the way, amounts to a lot of pennies as this restaurant is not a value proposition. But we've never been disappointed and we've been going annually for the better part of 10 years. Yeah, it's a splurge, but it never has failed to please. Strongly recommended for special occasions.

Our visit was to celebrate our Anniversary as we have enjoyed all visit to Valentien's in the past. We were not disappointed as the booth gave us a beautiful ocean view over the golf course, the menu was varied and unique, the service was outstanding and the meal for each of us was exceptional. This restaurant will remain on our list of the best of San Diego's restaurants for special occasions.
