    My Swedish father (94) was in town and I thought I'd take him to lunch at this upscale Scandinavian restaurant. It's a very "crisp", elegant environment as one would expect. Yet it is also very comfortable. The service is impeccable. Our server went out of his was to provide wine tastings, advice, Q/A, and guidance. The food itself has been superb every time I have been there, for lunch or dinner. It's best described as very fresh, healthy fare -- with great creativity and the highest quality ingredients. The dishes are not overpriced for this level of quality. But I often overspend -- only because I can't help myself from ordering extra dishes and drinks. In terms of particulars, I especially like their herring, seasonal seafood, and salad/vegetable dishes. On this visit, our group enjoyed several orders of halibut. We also sampled their meatballs which were very good too. The desert was a unique and delicious black currant creation with chocolate and vanilla meringue. As a Scandinavian person myself, I love this type of food. It is a great alternative to the upscale French and Italian restaurants in town -- which are fabulous also, but less wholesome. I learned on this visit that the restaurant is about to start their annual "herring festival" for lunch. I will definitely be back to check that out.

    I have eaten at Aquavit in its various incarnations several times over the last 10+ years. The food is always creative and inventive and worthwhile. However. . . 1) This is not a restaurant for picky eaters, and the menu available on-line by "googling" "Aquavit menu" is not even close to the limited menu that is current. Since the on-line menu was similar to ones in some of its past incarnations, I did not investigate further and was surprised by the actual fare which was very limited. 2) The service was problematic. In our case, perhaps because of #1, the servers were dismissive and impolite and seemed to enjoy playing jokes on the two of us. As I said, the food is interesting, but the overall experience was definitely not. I do not plan to return. . . which seems to be what Aquavit wants based on the way that we were treated.

    Disappointing. Very good but I expected more. Service was very good but not superb. Asked for a second cup of coffee which never arrived. Not at the level of the best in NY.

    Service was absolutely flawless. Presentation fantastic. Creative chef tasting menu. Wine pairings were not to my taste, but very esoteric and creative. Aquavit tasting flights very nice and paired with caviar was a highlight. This is not "Swedish" food, but haute cuisine with a Swedish view, or perspective. We eat at Aquavit about 2-3 times a year and it never disappoints.
