After this latest visit on a busy Thursday, I kept telling saying, "it's next door to Proctor's Theatre." If you need to make a show, the Bistro could not be more convenient. The bar is not the best place for dinner, but on a busy night, the small dining room fills up. Wait staff are friendly and competent, but can be stretched. A small-team approach helps some. I recommend that you stick to the small plates. The entree options are high-priced for what they are. Salmon with crab topping is no better than any other you've tried. Risotto is nothing to write home about. Greens and beans with broccoli-rabe is an odd preparation. Green salads are good. Stick to the tapas and get to the Theatre on time. Dessert is available in the Theatre lobby!
Just the right atmosphere for casual, but important, business discussions, particularly in the back room. (The main dining area is somewhat noisy and tables very close together.) The menu has a good variety of options, food is well prepared and always delicious. Prices are a bit on the high side for Schenectady, but not outrageous.
We're delighted we discovered this excellent restaurant in downtown Schenectady. It's kind of hidden down the block from the wonderful Proctors Theater and we had wandered in here once before after the show. The menu is creative - definitely not the usual ingredients you see on a typical menu. We liked that you could have just small plates, or the most fascinating pizza as well as full dinner entrees. The service was excellent even with the restaurant having filled up quickly after the matinee at the theater. We live in Vermont- about a 90 minute drive away- but this is worth the trip.
It's definitely a little pricey for an entree but the menu has range of small plates and pizzas as well. I love the live music, great service and unique atmosphere. It's like nothing else in Schenecdaty. A gem
My wife and I have been here a half-dozen times, and the food and drinks are, for the most part, excellent. This visit, no back room table was available -- it's much quieter there -- even though I had requested it on the reservation. We were seated at a high table in the front, where it is too noisy for our druthers. Further, the time to get the various courses was unusually slow; we had to hurry to be sure to finish in time for the show at Proctors. All in all, a disappointing experience at what has been a fine, if expensive, dining experience.
Great meal and great place, service was fantastic!
Our first time here. Great atmospere and food was delicious. Highly recommend.
Very memorable dining experience. Atmosphere was wonderful, staff very professional and friendly, food courses came out in a timely manner, was very pleased with everything here.
another excellent meal at aperitif! we were a party of six and all thought that the food was excellent and plentiful. it was the first time we sat in the front room and did find it a little noisy but we loved the ambience!
The best thing about the meal was the salad (simple spring greens) and the wine, the house chard. I had a baked pasta so overdone that it was hard as a rock. The food is way overpriced relative to the quality. Went there because I was going to Proctor's for a concert. Will look elsewhere for dinner next time.
Aperitivo Bistro is always a wonderful evening of delicious food and drink. It is one of our first choices to go for a nice evening out. My husband and I have tried many different dishes, but now that we tasted the sesame chicken pizza and loved it, we seem to want it everytime we go there.
As always, the food and service were excellent. This dinner was the start of a wonderful evening!
Regular menu seems way over priced for value received.
It was a busy Friday night, and when we arrived, our table was waiting for us, which is really nice since we have a 17 month old toddler.
All the food chosen for the evening came out at the appropriate temperatures and was all very tasty. Both the Mussel and Calamari/Arugula salad dishes were the highlight of the meal.
While the food was excellent, the service was awkward. I was advise that the Restraunt Week discount was ended - a day before it was advertised to. To make matters worse, patrons on both sides of us were visited by the manager, and offered alternatives to the discount that was advertised. I chose not to embarass my guest and paid over $50 more for dinner, and honored my tipping obligation too: $60 more. I dine out often, and our bill did include a bottle of innexpensive wine, coffee, and desserts. $160 for two. It's the idea that we were not catered to, in an environment that is structured and compensated for comfort, that burned me. While I liked the food, it will be hard to return without bringing this bad-taste back with me.
My wife and I both ordered the 3 course special for $25 each. The first course (ceasar salad for my wife, and baked maple syrup sweet potato fries for me) was good. The entree was better (salmon for my wife, fried chicken for me). The sides that accompanied the main course were excellent. For example, the greens, mashed potatoes, and sauce that accompanied the chicken were better than the chicken itself. But the deserts were simply outstanding(mixed berry crisp for my wife and fallen chocolate cake with vanila ice cream for me). My wife got the wine accompanying each course for an additional $9. The wine pairings were excellent. All in all, the fixed priced dinner was a very good meal and an excellent value. We were pleased.
The Restaurant Week specials were wonderful. Wine pairing was excellent. The servers are very knowledgable . Overall great experience. I recommend Apertivo to my friends.
My husband particularly liked the chicken parm. It had a nice fresh flavor of fresh tomatoes ralther than a tomatoe sauce. He said that it was one of the best dinners out he has had in a long time.
Excellent food, but very noisy.
Our table had a number of small plates, including a lovely caprese salad with awesome roasted cherry tomatoes. There was a glitch with one of the dishes that did not match the description in the menu, much to the surprise of the guest and the waiter. The manager was very apologetic and took care of the problem immediately. We appreciated it very much.
The food and service were fabulous! Will definitely be going back!
great as usual!!! love being able to have such great service, wine & food right next to proctor's. excellent!!!!!!
The visit was on an evening of a show at Proctor's Theater. The restaurant was fairly busy. Service was a bit slow and the service person did not ask how our meal courses were. The bottle of Wine was served too cold and the server poured too much wine into the glass. This is not an uncommon practice. Our appetizer of calamari was just OK. The pizza was very good. Overall a good experience. Many of the dishes we viewed at other tables looked very appetizing.
Our first time at Aperitivo was before a show at Proctors. I knew their menu would be limited but my husband and I both found something very enjoyable for our meals. I would really like to return on another night to experience their full menu.
The food was surprising and excellent and service cheerful and attentive. The evening was a bit expensive, but worth it.
The service was amazing. Our waitress was there but not intrusive. The food was kind of comfort food with a twist of new flavors. Will definitely be back for more.
i've been several times, usually before a show at proctors. the service has always been excellent and the food presentation is lovely and the unique taste combinations are worth coming back for. never a problem getting to the show on time.
Appertivo is our favorite restaurant in Schenectady.
We look forward to eating there almost as much as going to a show at Proctors!
Great service, wonderful waitstaff, and the food was fantastic!
Megan Simmons provided excellent service.
We stop before all Proctor events.
Always slow service, even more than one would typically expect on the night of a downtown event or nearby theater production. Food is a little over priced compared to many other similar fine dining level options in the area. You are paying for proximity to the theater. On the positive, the staff is very pleasant and there is much more seating inside than you might expect from a curbside assessment.
Atmosphere was great, food was amazing, cocktails fantastic. Waitress was not great, but not horrible. Look forward to enjoying another meal at Apertivo.
Food was very good but the service was a little on the slow side. Our reservation was at 6:45, our order was taken about 10 minutes later we recieved our drinks 20 minutes later. Nice place but the service is much better at the mansion!
A little noisy for the excellent jazz band that was playing there. A little on the pricey side too, but I thought the food was tasteful and recipes imaginative.
The food is very good to excellent. The calamari, for example, is excellent. The whole wheat pizza is very good and could be excellent if the red sauce was not so sparingly used.
The noise-level is high and it's not realistic to expect to have a quiet conversation. The tables are very small, uncomfortably so and functionally difficult to manage.
The staff are friendly and gracious.
I would recommend Apertivo for lunch or as part of a busy night. It's better suited to a party night than a date evening.
Everything as always a gastronomic pleasure. Choices excellent
I've been there many times and have never been disappointed. A local gem.
loved the pizza. Best thin crust gourmet combos. Perfect to attend before or after a show at Proctors
Food is always good here. Pricing is a bit high, but you are getting what you pay for. Staff is friendly and attentive. I often come here for lunch, and do feel that the lunch prices are too high.
Food was excellent as usual, and kris is our favorite server...he's the best.
