Anthony's Pier 4 Cafe Ratings and Reviews
Gracious dining in the Anthony's tradition even though it was New Year's Eve, a night when restaurants are often stressed and not able to live up to expectations. Lovely seats with a view
of Boston and tables far enough from one another to make conversation easy and enjoyable.
Can't say enough about a lovely dining experience.
I proposed to my wife here 25 yrs ago and wanted to go back for the occasion. I made a reservation online with a note about that, hoping that they would realize the specialty of the occasion. When we arrived at 7 pm, it was pretty empty so they never looked at the reservation or asked us anything but simply took us to a table.
The whole place has changed and it now looks like a mediocre hotel conference room. Totally different from the cozy nook with separate entrance with 2 steps and wooden banister that I remember. NOT at all cozy.
Generous portions but not very good food. I ordered the sole which was reasonable but no special sauce or anything. Kind-a dry. It came with total simple white rice, that's it. No veggies or anything. For the price, I would have expected maybe 2 large pieces of fish instead of 3 but with some special way of serving it or something on the side but it simply came on a white plate without anything on the fish like a little piece of dill or whatever to make it look pretty. Just "no love" into the cooking or presentation of the food.
The staff seemed a bit disorganized. Trying hard to please but it just did not have a happy feel to it.
I suggest a complete overhaul of the place because the location is great. Good luck.
As always, enjoyed dining at Anthony's ...Love Anthony's.. our favorite restaurant !
View is always spectacular as well as dinner and service is superb. Best popovers in the US! We brought a friend from Dallas and he raved how great, and Anthony's met all expectations on baked stuffed lobster.
Very poor experience....Waiter was very poor, with drinks slow to come, no water refills, slow overall, no follow-up, or ever asking how everything was. Food was also major disappointment...it took over 1 hour to arrive and then most of the meals were cold! Manager did not even seem aware of all this! Nice ambience and view but very poor dining experience.... would never go back!!!
Dine there several times a year when in Boston area. Find food can be hit or miss. Usually order grilled fish. Sometimes excellent others dry. Portions smaller side. Staff usually very nice, but training could be better. Not particularly knowledgeable re menu. Views fantastic. And the popovers a special treat. Both reasons we keep going back.
Anthony's Pier 4 is always consistent. We took my Mother-in-law to celebrate her b-day and enjoyed sitting outdoors overlooking the Boston sky view. Food is always good as both my Hubby and I are picky and we almost always have good food at this restaurant.
We dined years ago quite often for special occasions at Anthony's Hawthorne by the Sea at this location. It was lovely and upscale with impeccable service and cuisine, especially seafood.
The venue has been let go, which surprised us.
The view of the harbor is second to none and the building overall is gorgeous.
Yet the carpeting looked filthy and worn and our table was a metal banquet table, which I was surprised to see, and the entire restaurant needed to be painted.
We had a great table at the window, but the grand window was dirty.
The restroom was also in need of some updates.
Our service was great - our waiter professional, prompt and knowledgable.
On to the food...
The Glover Salad was almost as we remembered - cold, crisp and flavorful.
Popovers and marinated mushrooms, just as delicious as they were decades ago.
The clams casino had the same original flavor, yet the entire filling was mousse - no pieces of clams at all, which made for a strange mouthfeel.
The scallops - plump, delicious light flour coating and fresh!
The lamb chops were OK...a bit overdone, but the ratatouille accompaniment was overly mushy and unpleasant, making it inedible.
Is it possible that the potato croquettes were frozen and out of a bag?!
I didn't research who runs the restaurant now, but would think the group is related to the former Anthony's restaurant management since many menu items remain.
One would hope that with such a premier venue and location, it would be restored to its original splendor and the overall quality of the food would be brought back.
Anthony's Pier 4 continues to be one of my go-to restaurants locally. In the Summer months, they offer several variations of soft shell crab (which is my favorite). Although, many restaurants offer this locally, I find Anthony's the best. I love they pair this with a simple garlic butter sauce and the flavor is always delicious.
Was great to eat at Pier 4. Used to be a regular at Northern Ave location. Walking in tonight brought back many great memories. The dining room had awesome view, the server was a real pro!!! Food was typical Anthony's. Will return. This is a restaurant's restaurant!
Overall this was a fair experience; The restaurant is very run down and in need of sprucing up! The carpets are torn and patched with duct taped, the paint is peeling on the windows, the chair arms were all scratched and damaged.
Both the inside and outside of the restaurant have been neglected for years! The food was acceptable but the portions were ridiculously small for the money. I spent $30 for a piece of swordfish that came with nothing but a baked potato and was tiny! I had to spend another nine dollars to get a salad. This meal cost me $50 with tax and tip, no drink! I felt taken advantage of. I would not return anytime soon.
Love the ambiance and the popovers. For the price - the food was not outstanding. My son ordered fish and he enjoyed that very much. Lamb chops did not have much flavor and the steak was not as tender as I would expect. I would recommend that you stay with seafood. Lovely location!
The service was extremely slow. It took 25 minutes to get a round of drinks while we were seated. Waitress was not very attentive to our party. I'll give her the benefit of the doubt, it was easter Sunday. The place was not overly busy though and it seem like there was plenty of waitstaff.
We were celebrating a special occasion and enjoyed a window table overlooking the ocean. The bar in the tavern is small but also overlooks the ocean and sunset. The food was very good and prepared and served with nice touches. The service was a little slow but the server was very friendly and met most of our needs. We had been there many, many years ago and our return did not disappoint.
Quiet Saturday evening, because it was one of the coldest nights of the year. The smaller crowd did not affect the enthusiasm of the waitstaff, or the quality of the food. This is one of the last old school fine dining seafood restaurants in the Boston area. It is only 10-15 minutes from the Airport and the food and the atmosphere are well-worth the drive. This is not a place where the chef's ego overtakes the food. It is the best available ingredients prepared the way they should be in New England. Fresh seafood does not have to be dressed up and combined with exotic ingredients, but they do season and prepare in a way that subtly makes it better than anywhere else.
The restaurant is gorgeous, I love how the wait staff are dressed in Navy Whites, The view of Nahant Bay is stunning, My waiter was nervous, I think it might have been his first day, The oyster sampler app was delish, as well as the shrimp cocktail, lobster bisque was so thick w/out hardly any lobster pieces, 1/2 of my scallops were burnt and over cooked, my date's fisherman's platter was very skimpy considering it's the most expensive fisherman's platter in the neighborhood. The way my Martini was served was perfect. Chilled with the other 1/2 chilling in a tiny carafe full of ice, and I also admire how all meals were brought to table under a cloche. i almost forgot the yummy popovers and marinated mushrooms...so delicious. Unfortunately I didn't think it was worth the price of $180 including tip. I will probably go again, have a drink and look at the view. If the place upped it's game on food prep it would be a gem!
My husband and I had the most wonderful Valentines dinner. The food was amazing! We especially loved the popovers and mushrooms! The restaurant is so cozy and ambiance was wonderful! I also love coming in the summer to sit on the deck with a view of the ocean.
I've been going to Anthony's Pier 4 since the 70's and it never disappoints. Love the stuffed lobster and baked alaska. It's amazing. Also you can't miss out on the popovers. Yum like a puff of air. The view is spectacular in the daytime and at night you can see the city of Boston. Overall a must dining destination.
I took my parents and daughter for an early dinner. The interior is gorgeous as is the view. I can't say enough about the staff, all were wonderful.
The food and prices are a whole other story. I just don't know where to start. Thank god for the popovers and mushrooms.
I wouldn't mind paying those prices if the food wasn't over cooked and watered down.
I would love to come back but you have got to do something about the quality of the food!
