About Annie Gunn's
Since 1937, once nestled in the middle of cornfields stands the Smokehouse Market. An unpretentious structure, reminiscent of its days as the market for the surrounding Chesterfield area. The store now houses one of St. Louis's most celebrated restaurants, Annie Gunn's. Within its walls, Chef Lou Rook, III works his magic, creating irresistible cuisine with a sophisticated country life accent. In keeping with the concept of "Foods and wines inspired by the richness of country life", Chef Rook uses the best ingredients and the traditions that are most appropriate to them and imbues them with his own talented creative spin within the rhythm of the seasons. Annie Gunn's boasts an award-winning wine list as well.

Annie Gunn's Ratings and Reviews
As expected the food and service were fabulous. They were very busy for a Tuesday evening with multiple large groups, apparently business groups, which contributed to a somewhat loud dining environment, and a somewhat slow kitchen. As we were there for my wife's birthday dinner we were not in a hurry and enjoyed the extra time. Our server was great, attentive, knowledgeable, but not too intrusive. As expected it was a pricey dinner, but well worth it for the occasion. Definitely would recommend for any special occasion.
We had crab cakes, smoked shrimp, scallops, potato soup and their signature burger.
My wife said the scallops were perfectly cooked and some of the best she’s had.
However everything else was unremarkable. The burger didn’t wow me. The fries are much like the fries you’d get at five guys.
The potato soup was good, but nothing to write home about.
My wife said smoked shrimp seemed like a good idea but the execution wasn’t very good. She said she didn’t think the smoke complimented the meat at all.
The crab cakes were pretty good but lacked on the crab portion.
I think we will use our future gift cards at the smokehouse market where weve found items we enjoyed.
Dry aged options for steak under $80 would also be welcome. Although I doubt we will be back.
Had dinner with 5 friends. Great place for a larger group to get together and enjoy food, friends and fun. Cocktails and wine do not disappoint, and the food is fantastic. Do not have to worry about being loud as you blend into the background with everyone else. Don't know if this is where I would go for a quiet 2 person date, but grab a few friends for dinner! Great for people watching.
We took friends to Annie Gunn's last night as "thank you" gift and to celebrate a birthday. It was their first time there. The service was outstanding, beginning with a champagne toast on the house, a spectacular bottle of affordable wine, entrees that melted in our mouth ending with a complimentary dessert to die for! Matt was our waiter and did a fantastic job answering our many questions and handling all of our witty comments as well! Well done Annie Gunn's!
What a delight! We drove two and a half hours to get there, and it was worth it. Every dish was beautifully cooked. The plate of smoked seafood couldn't have been more to my taste. We shared an abolute vat of bread pudding in a bourbon-laden bananas Foster sauce for dessert. Even the espresso drinks were exceptionally good. And the deli next door! Wonderful selection of treats and wonderful wines as well.
The steak was the best my husband ever had. Leslie visited to with us for a while. She is a very genuine person. We hugged each other when we left. We were celebrating our 42nd wedding anniversary and appreciated the special romantics room for the occasion. We actually purchased two $100.00 gift cards that night to give to my doctor and surgeon for saving my life. We hope they enjoy your restaurant as much as we did.
I had a 16 oz steak and it was straight fire. My friend had a half pound burger and it was also fire. We got the potato pancake with bacon and a pear chutney. Guess what. Fire. It was super expensive but I had a gift card, and if I had any money I would go there again because the food was worth the expensive price. Overall, 10/10 would go again.
The food was amazing! The service was great. Our overall experience was very nice. If I had to complain at all, it would be about our seats. I put the reservation in about 5 days in advance and mentioned it was an anniversary. In the section for extra memos I asked for a nice quite or private table. When we got there for our dinner, our table was the first one closest to the door. So, not only was it the most traffic filled booth, but the cold air from outside kept hitting us every time the door opened. Obviously not the worst thing that could happen, but was a little disappointing. Still really enjoyed our visit and will most definitely be going back!
Annie Gunns has been serving amazingly good food for decades. While they are geared to meat-eaters, a vegetarian can have a great experience too--they can do many items without the meat, especially if you let them know in advance. It is an upscale restaurant, comfortable and quiet. They source many ingredients locally and are known for their smoked meats. Their wine list is extensive and includes many from Missouri. The potato pancake is light and flavorful even without the bacon. The fish was cooked to perfection. It's a great place for a special occasion or lunch with the girls.
Food was good, service sucked, very pretentious and fake.
Upon arriving we had to wait for 15 minutes until our reservation time even though the table we were seated as was available the entire time. Server (Alex) was terrible. Didn’t get offered specials, wine recommendations, Pepper on salad, and provided lemon when asked first time (second time was the charm). Due to being younger couple my guess is the server didn’t think we were going to spend high dollar so he wrote us off pretty quick (note this was our anniversary, date night, and night away from our son, dressed in our Sunday best). He was at table next to us constantly but barely gave us the time of day. It was easier to track down other staff. Since we were celebrating our anniversary we got a free desert but on the receipt the server circled the discount part of the desert in addition to adding it on the bill. Nice gesture of free desert but no need to point that out especially when we didn’t order it. The most annoying and disrespectful thing he did was write the total amount of the bill on our credit card receipt. We used a gift card for part and with the remaining amount paid with cc. Going back to the part of being a younger couple (30 years old), he must have thought we were uneducated and was only going to tip on the cc amount even though the receipt is there. I’ve been to Annie Gunn’s several times since the early 2000s and mostly get a decent experience but this was ridiculous. If I ever go back, I’ll sit at the bar as we noticed the bar tender was very tentative to his customers.
With all the other restaurant out there I would suggest to pass on this. If you are looking for a good steak and great customer service head to J Gilberts, 801 Chophouse, or even Longhorn. They’ll take care of you.
I eat out for business all the time all over the US. Gunn's happens to be within a couple miles of my house and is my favorite spot for great food and service. They consistently over deliver on both - I have NEVER had a bad experience in 10+ years. Additionally, my daughter has a dairy allergy and they have always been extremely accommodating - never making us feel like asking for tweaks is anything but a pleasure for them to address.
