Anneke Jans Ratings and Reviews
Anneke Jans has been our tried and true restaurant choice for years. It has the magical combination (so hard to find) of tasty upscale food without the pretense of typical high-end restaurants. The menu is a perfect size for us - 10 or so solid entrees that aim to please, and do. We don't like restaurants with page after page of menu choices where everything ends up average or worse. Better to focus and be great, that's what they do. Re: ambience, it's not snooty or self-important, it's down to earth in a classy way. Upscale yet cozy, a tough combination! The vibe is pleasantly lively - Anneke's is a social place where people are having fun. It's not quiet or rowdy - perfectly in between. Service is friendly without attitude.
Hadn’t been here in over a year, not sure why but I will not wait as long for my next visit! It was the first visit for my four guests. Everyone absolutely loved the food and the atmosphere. The salmon dish and the mussels are both must tries. Great wine list!
Overall dinner was great. The fried olive appetizer was a hit. The mussels were some of the best we've had. The arancini did lack something. The horseradish sauce was a perfect foil but overall the taste was a little on the bland side. Desserts of creme brulee and bananas foster trifle were excellent. We were there on a quiet night so noise level was non-existant. Our server was very attentive but didn't hover. This was our second time but it will not be our last.
We were at the restaurant on New Years Eve. They had a special menu in addition to the regular menu. Our group tried selections from both menus including duck, rack of lamb, salmon and pork. Each dish was wonderfully and creatively prepared and presented. Our server, Julia, was well informed, attentive and perfectly charming. The atmosphere was fun and sophisticated. Everyone in our group was thrilled with the experience. I would have no hesitation recommending Anneke Jans. We will be back soon.
We frequented on New Year's Eve with a party of 4. The complimentary Valet Service was a nice way to start off being that it was cold, icy and parking on a busy night is limited in Kittery Foreside. We were seated promptly after a pleasant greeting. Waitress arrived with drink menu shortly after we were seated. Drinks were served promptly as were appetizers and entree. The only complaint for the entire evening was they served me the wrong appetizer. I opted not to return it but wish I had as it was not my first choice. But, that's on me as i Have no doubt they would have taken it back and served the correct one without a problem.
All in all, an excellent dining choice for New Year's Eve. Have frequented other local restaurants on NY Eve and had terrible experiences. This was a nice change of pace and will be a "go to" for special occasions in the future.
My wife and I have been to Anneke's on several occasions the since it opened. On this particular night we invited friends from northern Maine, and the Boston area as we were looking for a midway point for all. I will admit the food is always worth the drive, but on this occasion the service was just terrible and awkward. We were early for our table and were headed for the bar but the hostess informed us our table was available. However we then waited almost 20 minutes for someone to take our drink order, and when the drinks came and one of our friends was unhappy with her drink (she was a bartender for many years) they returned and told her there was nothing wrong with it instead of just getting her another. It was an Aperol and Prosecco cocktail, and our friend felt the Prosecco was flat versus bubbly. Needless to say she did not want another and instead we ordered wine for the table. We finally got some bread for the table, but had to find a server to take our dinner order. I'm not sure if we ever established who our server was, as we seemed to get served by several of the staff.
We were not in any rush to get through the meal but for a restaurant of this level and price point we were not happy with their service. No manager ever came over to check on us, and the food, coffee and desserts all followed slowly and we agreed this was not a good choice for a future get together. It was a sizable check, but we didn't tip as we normally would have. My wife and I will return as the food is very good, but I would be reluctant to invite friends again to Anneke's.
From the greeting at the door to the leave-taking the personnel were warm and attentive. The food was unique and seasonally appropriate. Thanks for making a “thank-you” dinner a special occasion. The mussels were specially complimented by the white sauce and bacon chunks. The pork was accompanied very appropriately by spaetzle topped with al dente broccoli de rabe. Nice touches both.
Overall, we had an acceptable dinner. Not outstanding but fine.

Duck breast ( though unusual that it was served unsliced, whole, with very little cherry jus. Dull knife made it a bit of a struggle to enjoy)
Presentation of otherwise good food was sloppy and a little slapdash.
Bread was brought without bread plates so our choice was to hold our bread while buttering it, or put it onto the bare tabletop., where it would stay if it wasn’t all eaten at once. Tried to get the servers attention but see below...
Silver service was not replenished. Entrees had to be eaten with the unused salad fork. Not a disaster obviously but combined with the dull steak knife it wasn’t ideal. Attempts to grab the waitress/ bartender were again unsuccessful. Actually ....
Service. This is where the restaurant really failed. Server was very nice, pleasant and charming while we had her attention but otherwise Inattentive. She never scanned the tables which I think is basic to good service. Your guests should not have to wait for the waiter to finish a personal conversation to be noticed. Converse by all means, it’s not prison, but scan your tables to see if there is something needed.
Oh, dessert. Driest bread pudding EVER! Not sure but I think the kitchen forgot the sauce.
One point - Unsure of why we were seated in the bar as opposed to the dining room. When I asked if there was any difference I was told no., but clearly there could have been some effort made to make the experiences more equitable. The price per person I’m sure didn’t vary- $75pp. w/ tax and tip.
Would I go back?
Maybe. But only for a burger or barfood.
We hadn't been to this restaurant for many years and decided to give it another try. It was fabulous. Great selection of menu choices and our food was delicious. The service was impeccable and we loved how we didn't have to struggle to hear each other talk. A+. We will be back soon.
Went here to celebrate our 25th anniversary. Extremely loud and busy at 7:45 Saturday night. No hostess/host at the stand when we entered. Had to wait to be seated until a waiter noticed us standing there. Once seated we ordered beverages as well as our meals (we had already perused the menu at home). Bread basket served quickly, but we had to wait an extremely long time for a beer and a hot tea. Apps came shortly after. Two small (silver dollar sized) cod cakes in a pumpkin remoulade (different, tasty) and 2 small short rib skewers with a side of homemade red cabbage "kimchi" (also different, tasty). Mains: Pork Osso Buco with Parsnip Mashed, Caramelized Onions, Orange Gremolata and Pan Seared Sole, White Bean Puree, Roasted Carrots, Braised Fennel. Osso buco was a stretch: it was a pork shank. Cooked well, but completely devoid of the orange gremolata....I asked the waiter to retrieve some from the kitchen, and it made all the difference! The parsnip/potato mash with caramelized onions was quite tasty. On the other hand, the sole was bland and cooked to mush. It had no firmness whatsoever. Like fishy babyfood. The white bean puree was so devoid of flavor that we couldn't even tell that it was made from beans! The roasted carrot and braised fennel were both so undercooked as to be nearly inedible. Hard as rocks. Desserts: Pumpkin Flan and "Triple Chocolate". The one nod to our anniversary was a candle stuck in the flan. Ho-hum. That said, it was light and quite tasty. The Triple Chocolate was a delicious combination of chocolate brownie topped by dark chocolate ganache topped with white chocolate "whipped cream" served in a mason jar. Desserts were definitely the high point of the meal. All in all, just OK.
We went to Anneke Jans for Restaurant Week Special and were blown away. The food was superb, the staff was delightful, prices not at all alarming, the ambiance was relaxing, it was quiet. I/we could not recommend the restaurant highly enough. A really pleasant experience, enough so that we have arranged to meet friends of ours there next week for dinner. An additional bonus is that parking is easy and very close.
It has been years, decades ago at March in NYC, since I have had such a pleasant dining experience.
AJ is very special to us...always had great drinks and eats whether it’s just at the bar for Happy Hour or special occasions added as a gathering place with friends.
The staff and service do a terrific job.
The food is creative, tasty, and well priced.
We are so lucky to have AJ in our area.
My favorite dish has always been the mussels with blue hill cheese. I thought the entree was good but, in the past, it has been much better, more blue hill cheese, more flavor. The butternut/pumpkin soup was good but, again, not a rich flavor. They do a great glass pour of wine. Lovely restaurant in so many ways.
We requested a high top in the lounge area, and it was perfect! The bar scene was active on a Saturday night but, not too noisy!! We each started with a very lovely cocktail, shared an appetizer, and enjoyed our entrees. When I ordered the mussels, the waitress remarked "We are known for them" but, having finished the bowl of them I'm not sure why? My husbands duck breast was amazing!! This restaurant keeps it's standards and remains one of our very favorites!
