Outstanding .. amazingly flavourful. And personalised service. Truly great experience.
We have been to Amma before and will always try to get there whenever in New York in the future. Everything about the place is great, the food, the ambiance and service but the stand out thing for us is the wine list. Terrific for an Indian style restaurant and overseen by the sommelier Jay. We had the tasting menu with wine matching - and really enjoyed the food and wine with some great matches. Lovely Juracon made with Gros Manseng and Alsace wines which went really well. Just great.
My first visit. The place was almost empty, but the food was excellent. Best Indian I have had in a long time.
Good food, nice and attentive service, room needs some repairs.
I love Amma. They never disappoint. Okra is yummy, the chicken dishes are great. The jalapeno nan is excellent. And the service and ambiance is awesome.
Excellent service and wonderful food
The service was exceptional and the food was delicious.
Excellent food and very helpful staff. A definite repeat for us.
Many of the usual things but if you go with the waiters suggestions you'll find some new and interesting flavor combinations.
Very good Indian food, in a quiet place with excellent and attentive service. Hard to beat such value for price in Mid Town, especially on the East Side.
Amma is our new favorite Indian restaurant in New York. The variety of regions within India represented on the menu is unusual, with North and South Indian dishes and even some Nepalese dishes. And every dish we ordered was executed to perfection. The bel puri and iddli were just like the ones our Indian friends' mothers make at home. Chicken xacutti was excellent as well, and a stewed lamb that was not the typical rogan josh was so tender you only needed a piece of naan to eat it. Although we came in for lunch seeking South Indian dosa, they had none that day--and it didn't matter a bit because the dishes we chose were all top notch. The banquettes are a little worn, but the food is spot on, the service is friendly and timely, and the opportunity to explore regional Indian cooking was great.
Food was outstanding. Extensive wine list, Indian beer, and drinks.
As a dhesi, I was astounded by how wonderful this food was!!!
I believe Zagat's review assessment of the food for this restaurant is overstated.....they give it a 25....I think it is at best a 22. Good food but note extraordinary food.
Has been my favorite Indian restaurant in NYC for years!
As always we were very impressed by the creativity in the food, and the warm welcoming service at Amma.
Our favorite Indian restaurant in New Yo4k.
A dear friend and I had a magical evening at Amma. We were warmly welcomed. The vegan tasting menu was divine and there was so much food that we had to take some home.
The service was attentive. I’d recommend Amma to anyone who enjoys creative, excellently prepared cuisine.
Very attentive service!
Great place and food is amazing.
Food and service were great - Ambience was average, but I’d come back for the food!
This was our second visit to Amma. It is a small, tight room. We were greeted very affably. Service is very good. Friendly staff. The host is also the wine steward. I asked for a bottle of Oregon Pinot Gris, which, I said, I'd seen on their online list. He pointed out that wines vary, and suggested a Pinot Gris from Alsace; it was excellent. For appetizers we ordered spinach chat ($7), a crunchy stack of sprouted mung beans; and a trio of chicken, lamb and potato samosas ($9). Both were good. As entrees we ordered Madras chicken ($20) and Apricot stuffed lamb fillets ($25), served with a small dollop of lemon rice. Both entrees had a generous serving of sauce, the chicken a bit more spicy. We also ordered basmati rice.
The wait staff was attentive, friendly, but not intrusive. The dining room got quite loud, and I found the volume a bit irritating. Nonetheless, the food was excellent and the wine, kept cold, paired perfectly, its fruit and minerality a perfect counterpoint to the spice.
Overall, it was a pleasant meal and we enjoyed it greatly. I will go back, and I recommend Amma.
Food very ordinary and not spicy enough. Madras tastes heavily of coconut. Tables very close together. Head waiter acts and dresses like he’s running a funeral parlour. Lighten up and smile!!
The hype for this place was greater than the experience. Food was okay, nothing spectacular. Nice and quaint for a quick lunch.
I’ve eaten magnificent Indian food in the best and most famous restaurants in New Delhi , New York and London but Amma is head and shoulders above anything else I have experienced anywhere. Sanjeep guided us through the menu and wine list to the most enjoyable dining experience and his attention to our mostly unspoken wishes was outstandingly perceptive. We can’t wait to return again.
Ammazing! Best Indian food in NYC. And a decent wine list to boot.
This was our second visit to the restaurant and the food was fantastic. Our first trip here was during restaurant week and they sent out a coupon so we decided to head there once again! I would still come here without the coupon but that was just more of an incentive to go before the year was over.
The overall atmosphere is not very noisy at all (it is easy to think people aren't even in there) so it made room for intimate conversation. The only slight downfall is that it is a little tight towards the back but that is not much a downfall to keep me from being a repeat customer. The staff was very nice and attentive throughout the evening.
The food at Amma is really excellent. It's the best Indian restaurant in Manhattan in my opinion. The quality of the ingredients is top notch. The service is very attentive and fast. I've been a few times and it's usually not too loud however it can sometimes be (not the best acoustics). My friend and I ordered martinis which were on the watery side, but the food is so good we over looked it!
Excellent Food. We ordered the tasting menu and it was so much fun!
Some of the best Indian food I've had on three continents. Beetroot kofta is excellent and unique.
Excellent authentic Indian cuisine , friendly staff great wine selection. Unfortunately, unless they clean up the bathroom and give the Restaurant a fresh coat of paint , not to mention a new rug....... I wouldn’t return. I’m not a snob by any means, but they clearly haven’t freshened this place up sine they opened 16 years ago! Quite a shame considering the food is so very good!?! Come on owner? Fix your Restaurant up!!!
The food was fantastic. Service was very attentive. Will definitely go back.
My daughter and I loved the meal. We took advantage of the tasting menu, which provides a great overview of the Indian food available.
Whenever I come to NYC I go to Amma, best Indian restaurant ever! The food is amazing and the staff is kind and nice!
I eat a lot of Indian food including many places in NYC and Amma is OUTSTANDING. It's down the block from my office but never went in until I saw a Zagats list reflecting that it is one of the best Indian restaurants in town. I decided to stop in for the first time about 2 months ago and I have been back multiple times - three times for lunch and once for dinner. Lunch is real food, not an all you can eat buffet of cheap slop. They allowed BYO with reasonable corkage but they also have a reasonable wine list for a small place. I recommend it very highly.
Exquisite service. Wonderful food. Intimate atmosphere. Great wine choices.
Our first time at Amma was excellent. We had the vegetarian tasting menu, and it was striking how varied and delicious it was. Service is wonderful.
Great meal. Quiet and cozy. Excellent food— really great. And the service was spot one. Instant favorite!
Excellent food and servicie, I would definitely recommend Amma to my friends.
Really good food. Staff is very reserved not overly friendly more formal. There is a long wait for the food because they make it while your waiting. The Tandori was excellent not too dry. The sauces were very good and the typical dish of fried okra is a must. I've eaten at this restaurant many times and it's consistently good. It's not your typical Indian restaurant and is more expensive than most. For 5 people the bill came to around 350.00 we had 2 apps 5 entrees.
