Being Indian, we tend to eat Indian once wherever in the world we travel and this time we had a nephew with us, who hadn’t eaten good Indian food in awhile. The appetisers were not outstanding e.g. the Kati roll did not hang together and there was no lemon/lime inside. The service too was not attentive, till I made a comment to the more senior waiter. The entrees were better but again the butter chicken was not marinaded properly before being cooked in a fairly tasty sauce. In summary, a local curry place able to charge relatively high prices because of the neighborhood. Not a memorable experience but not bad either.
Amazing food. Very well spiced. Perfect on a cold day!!!
My favorite restaurant in NYC! Great ambiance, food, and service!
Absolutely lovely. Beautiful setting, muted lighting, muted sound, delicious and creative food and cocktails. Very pleasant and unobtrusive service. I will return often.
My favorite Indian restaurant ever. Love this place. Butter chicken is the best in NY
Good food and authentic. Friendly service. The waiters were welcoming and helpful with making choices. Would recommend this restaurant to friends looking to have Indian food in New York.
The waitstaff could not have been friendlier nor more helpful. Our 11 and 13 year olds loved all the recommended dishes.
Food is always delicious. Service outstanding. Small cozy space. Great wine list. Highly recommend
I went to celebrate my friend’s b-day.
The food was excellent and our server gave us great suggestions.
The restaurant is a converted apartment in a brownstone, so not handicap accessible and the entrance is confusing. You have to go into the brownstone and it’s the first door on the left. It’s also tight quarters.
Only criticism is that I had requested a candle on the dessert but they forgot.
Love this place! Great staff and Jay helped us with a great wine pairing.
We live in Nashville where there are no good Indian restaurants. This place is AMAZING. be sure to have the okra, the cauliflower and the Butter Chicken is fantastic!!!!! I swear. This place is truly a gem!!!
Precooked chicken tough
Spinach way overcooked to lifeless mess.
Wine glass pours very small.
Overpriced for food quality
I’ve been here 5 or 6 times....love this restaurant!!!!
Amma is a great neighborhood gem for Indian food lovers. Great service, amazing food.
We loved Amma. It is small and charming, cozy and charming. The food was wonderful. We LOVED the okra.
was our last night in NYC and dinner had been hit/miss affair. so planned on somewhere nice and landed here. server made excellent recommendations and was very accommodating, even charging my phone. loved the okra dish, best okra we ever had. love good meat/protein, but judge a restaurant by the way vegies are treated. they are treated very well here. and loved the stuffed lamb with apricots; wow.
I have been here several times and have always enjoyed the refined food and service. The breads are particularly good. My only complaint about this visit is that we were three, and given a two top with a chair placed to the side to seat three. There was insufficient room for our food, and as the host who suggested the venue, I took the chair in the aisle.
Delicious food, and attentive staff ready to recommend dishes and explain the menu. Nice ambiance too, this restaurant is a favorite!
We went to this Indian restaurant at the suggestion of a local friend. We were so delighted by the food, we returned the following night and the experience was just as fantastic! Sadly, the only complaint was we couldn’t get their Ras Malai on either night. Another note, they serve you “family style”, so they will literally serve each dish onto your and your guests plates, so if that’s not your bag, I’d suggest you let them know beforehand. Bottom line, expect the best Indian food in the city! Will be returning on our next trip next year!
We love Amma. It is my mother favorite place and we come here at least twice a year when she visits us. We are always impressed. The food is exceptional both for Indian food lovers and novices, service is flawless and decor classy and relaxing at the same time. We will keep coming.
Been at this restaurant a lot of times and has never disappointed.
Food quality is great.
A good place to be for casual dinners and for group upto 4
One of the best restaurants in NY. Great food. Attentive service and reasonable cost. Highly recommend.
Simply perfect service from the moment we arrived and the food was phenomenal. Each dish was well balanced and complex.
Not a good experience. Took over 30 min to get our appetizers. My mulligatawny tasted like flavored water which was very disappointing as it’s my favorite. My friend had to send her entire meal back as it was too salty and to spicy to eat. Even the waiter said he tried it and said he had to spit it out because it was too salty. I will not return to Amma and it’s unfortunate we did not have a good experience.
Love this restaurant! Really delicious Indian food, with a few unusual choices on the menu, along with more standard favorites. Reasonably priced, especially at lunch. Quiet ambiance, good for conversation.
Great food and a little off the beaten path for Midtown east. Excellent wine list, rare in my experience for Indian restaurants, and fairly priced.
Most of the food was delectable. However the chicken vindaloo was not very good. The sauce was great but the chicken was in chunks that were very dry with no taste. Everything else was so wonderful, and the portions were so generous we had no need for a replacement, that I did not complain at the time, but wanted you to know this.
lovely restaurant. great food. authentic. catering to needs of guest. everything we asked for, the answer was yes. highly recommend. salmon, not a traditional india dish, was delicious.
A long time favorite that can be relied on for consistent good food and friendly servy
I send everyone to Amma and I always receive notes of thanks! We have been going to Amma for over a decade and have never been disappointed!
Best Authentic Indian ! The owners and staff are always lovely.
The food at Amma is the best. That is why my friend and I went there. However, on this occasion the service was poor, to dismissive. When we first arrived, few people were there, but we waited a very long time before inquiring after our appetizers. When we asked, they were brought at once. It seemed, however, as if we were being ignored, and I could not understand it. As the restaurant filled up, the waitstaff cheerfully greeting those customers whom they knew, and we were sitting beyond one hour without getting our main dishes, and no one paid attention to us. Again, we had to inquire, and eventually the food came. the food is tops, but it was a trying experience, because we don't like to have to complain, and beg for our food, while feeling that we are being treated as nonpersons. Would I go there again? I would love to, but I would also like to know that someone would act as if I am there! Thank you. I don't like to give bad reviews, but the total lack of attention sort of spoiled the dining experience.
Good food, service a bit condescending: I was with an older lady, she was treated as if she were a child :)
A favorite we remembered from a NYC visit a few years ago, and second visit lived up to our memories!!
Food is always delicious. Friendly service. Neighborhood gem. Go also for the excellent wine list. Jay, the sommelier, is fantastic! We had a bottle of Fleury, so seldom seen on wine lists. We are going back for food and wine!
Excellent food and service. Quality Indian cuisine!
The food is excellent. Service, ambience very welcoming. Wonderful neighborhood restaurant with a difference. Popular, so always full (quite crowded). Highly recommend.
This was my third time at Amma. We had the tastings menu which, at $50, is a great deal. You get to sample a lot of different dishes. However, the meal did not "wow" me as it did the previous times that I was there. Don't get me wrong. Everything was good and a great selection but...
Great food and service. Portions are quite big and taste is amazing! We will go again.
