Amma, the name means "Mother", is an intimate restaurant and has the same soothing qualities. Opened in 2002 by Anju Sharma, is a gem tucked away on the upper east side of Manhattan, the stylish restaurant evokes images of spices, with its ochre colored walls and sensuous red-orange suede wrap-around banquettes. Art deco chandeliers and pristine linens complete the ambience. In a short period of time, Amma has received numerous accolades from the press. Amma was rated "Two Stars" by Mr. William Grimes of NY Times. At Amma, the wine list is updated on a weekly basis and is carefully chosen from 30 countries from around the world. Amma, shows its guest a different India, so old that it is fresh.

This is a restaurant to enjoy — the food, the ambiance and the service. We ordered way too much but enjoyed it all from appetizers to deserts. The food was not chili pepper hot but it was so tasty that, spice lovers though we all were, we didn’t mind at all. We started with a complimentary appetizer or amuse-bouche that foretold the pleasures to come. The spinach chat with sprouted mung bean salad was exceptional. I never eat samosas (vegetarian selection) but loved theirs. The shrimp curry, lamb vindaloo, and beet kofta were great. Gulag jamun and rasmalai rounded off a very satisfying evening. The waiters were helpful but not hovering. On a Monday night, the place was calm. We would definitely go back.

Most of our dishes were excellent. Most outstanding was the service, particularly from the manager/part-owner. From seeing us on the street looking lost to allowing us to divide our bill the way we requested, he was extremely professional and welcoming.

We found the food and service to be lovely. Each of our dishes were flavorful- the 3 types of rice (I especially enjoyed the mint rice), the wonderful vegetables smothered in an interesting sauce, and the subtle rosemary bread.

The staff were particularly attentive, even filling my water glass repeatedly, which I appreciated.

Though the entrance to the restaurant requires you passing the mailboxes of the residents that live in the building, the actual dinning room was warm and charming.

It's an enjoyable, cozy find in our sometimes sterile, oversized city.

Our family has had a lot of Indian food over the years and this was easily one of the best ever. Small, intimate place with outstanding service and butter chicken (Tikki Masala) as good as it gets. Strongly recommend. Little hard to find and small on the inside, but well worth it once you are there.

We have been to Amma several times and each time it has been fabulous. We are a different kind of diner. We are long time vegetarians and rather than look at the menu, we ask our waiter to bring us food as if we were guests at their home rather than purchasing food from them. The only stipulation is that the food not be spicy...We always have a great meal. Amma has a great wine list which is unusual for an Indian Restaurant.

This was our first visit to Amma. Our server helped us select dishes from an outstanding menu and paired our selections with a wonderful wine. Our exceptional dining experience was so enhanced by the warm and gracious service we received. Their signature gin martini was the best I've ever had in the city. We look forward to returning on our next trip.

Everything was delicious and service and drinks were great but I was a little disappointed with how small the portions were. Also I was disappointed with the small amount of nan we got. It was cut up and there were like 3 pieces. I left hungry.

Being Indian, we tend to eat Indian once wherever in the world we travel and this time we had a nephew with us, who hadn’t eaten good Indian food in awhile. The appetisers were not outstanding e.g. the Kati roll did not hang together and there was no lemon/lime inside. The service too was not attentive, till I made a comment to the more senior waiter. The entrees were better but again the butter chicken was not marinaded properly before being cooked in a fairly tasty sauce. In summary, a local curry place able to charge relatively high prices because of the neighborhood. Not a memorable experience but not bad either.

I went to celebrate my friend’s b-day.
The food was excellent and our server gave us great suggestions.
The restaurant is a converted apartment in a brownstone, so not handicap accessible and the entrance is confusing. You have to go into the brownstone and it’s the first door on the left. It’s also tight quarters.
Only criticism is that I had requested a candle on the dessert but they forgot.

was our last night in NYC and dinner had been hit/miss affair. so planned on somewhere nice and landed here. server made excellent recommendations and was very accommodating, even charging my phone. loved the okra dish, best okra we ever had. love good meat/protein, but judge a restaurant by the way vegies are treated. they are treated very well here. and loved the stuffed lamb with apricots; wow.
