Absolutely delectable and filling Italian food served so share! Incredible pastas, sauces and fish. You have to try the swordfish meatballs, brook trout and veal chop.
The experience was exceptional. From the time we entered the restaurant, our encounters with all of the staff was consistently professional and friendly. I had the special, pork bellies and the roasted chicken. Both were well prepared and extremely delicious. Our server, Jarvas, was very knowledgeable about all the dishes and drink menus. He was an exceptional waiter. A great first experience and can't wait for my next visit.
Fabulous meal and wonderful service! We'll be back.
We have been to Amis before and loved it. It seemed a bit off this time. Service was so slow, the noise level outrageously loud (a soundtrack of Jimmy Hendricks- the whole album (??) was played from 6:00 to 6:30.). Usually, music is often the bartender's choice, but where the configuration of the restaurant has the bar and dining area in the same space, a little compromise is in order. I was literally yelling at my date the whole time, and left with a raspy voice! That is not my description of a romantic night.
The food, although presented nicely, lacked flavor. All of the dishes lacked flavor. Why, who knows. But somehow bland is not what the chef had in mind for his menu. We thought the prices were too high- $12 for a glass of generic wine, and the apps too were too high for what they were.
I wanted to love it but didn't. Maybe next time will be better, but this time was an overall disappointment from A-Z. Service was so slow as well, and with almost every seat taken, we wondered why the kitchen had not jump-started their line that night. We will be back because we want to embrace our neighborhood restaurants. Young people have to support the scene, but this visit was disappointing.
Amazing. This was our second time coming here and it's been a long time since our first, and I only wish we hadn't waited so long. The food is spectacular, our waiter was friendly and helpful and fast, the bar service was quick, and for how delicious the meal was I was shocked that it didn't cost us more!
Fantastic homemade food.
Our apps and pasta dishes were delicious. Portions are not huge but not skimpy either. Such pleasant staff at every turn - the hostess, bartender, wait staff. We were a chatty group of friends who hadn’t seen each other in a while and they were very patient with taking our order and letting us linger at the end.
A week ago we were reviewing our options for a place to go to dinner with another couple after the Philadelphia Flower Show. Our son, a former South Philadelphia resident, helped us with suggestions. Through Open Table we found that Amis had an available seating and we are very happy that we took it.
We do not like to eat the excessive portions provided by most moderately priced restaurants, so having course options helps gauge the amount we are going to eat. Amis offers that option. Amis is energetic, loud, open, fun and the fare offers some interesting, quite tasty ingredient parings. Most people will find a very good wine list, although slightly pricey.
Our very expressive server could be or maybe is an actress. She was a delight. She knows her business!
We were more than pleased with our whole experience.
The food was really bad. The polenta tasted like they opened a package of polenta mix and added water. It was tasteless. The octopus was drenched in olive oil (to avoid the smell I presume) it was extra gummy and inedible. My tea had a hair in it, and by the time the server came back my hot water was cold.
This is my neighborhood, go to kitchen... I eat here more often than in my own home. The food is so good, and inventive. There is a mix of classic dishes that are mainstays on the menu, a great selection of seasonal items that are added to the menu. Finally, there is usually The Beast of Amis - one dish / protein that becomes the main invention for the day. The Beast is usually offered as a appetizer, pasta course, and secondi or entree course. The Beasts are usually so inventive and good, that I frequently order all three special courses of the day.
Mixed up my friends order, my plate was excessively salty that it wasn't edible, and the dessert still had a baking sheet stuck to it.
We went for brunch. Everything was fantastic except for the ultima signora which was so dry wet took two bites and that was it. Thank heavens my sister ordered the rigatoni, sausage ragu, egg yolk and it was fantastic and there was more than enough for both of us to share. We also ordered the bread basket, the bufala ricotta bruschetta with hazelnut honey, Sal’s old school meatballs, ricotta and the tiramisu for dessert. The bufala ricotta bruschetta with hazelnut honey didn't seem to have that much taste but everything else (other than the ultima signora) was absolutely fantastic!! We will definitely go back but we will stick with the pasta dishes.
We had a great brunch with great food and service. Their appetizer of smoked sardine and avocado was a great way to start our meal!!
Overall fantastic experience. I don’t have one bad thing to say.
2nd time here and loved it even more! Sat at the chefs counter and was able to watch all of the action in the kitchen.
Everything was great but my favorite this time was the chestnut raviolis!! Wow amazing flavor!
The three antipasti dishes we had - eggplant caponata, escarole salad, and Sal’s meatballs - were excellent. The PA brook trout with pomegranate was perfectly cooked and delicious. The bucatini pasta with almond pesto was too salty. The “tartufo al bacio” chocolate dessert was to die for - a rich but yummy dessert. Service was top notch.
Hidden in a nice neighborhood in Center City, this little gem is worth the trip into Philly. Local fresh ingredients mixed with creative entree's and wonderfully handcrafted cocktails made this a great evening with a close friend. Would highly recommended the Fried Brussel Sprouts.
We've been to Amis now twice. The first time was a recommendation from a local. The first time we were here our dog was barking and we had to bolt mid-meal to get back to our hotel. The server packed us with a free dessert. The service this time was also excellent, the menu and the specials so delicious. We consider ourselves 'foodies' and Amis all around never ceases to amaze. Just an excellent local gem!
We really enjoyed our meal at Amis. Our waitress Amy made the evening even more special with her attentive service and great suggestions. My dining companions were two old high school chums and we shared the Ricotta Brushetta, Rigatoni Genovese (with delicious onions that had been caramelized for two days!), Pork Parmagnia and the bone-in sirloin. Everything was simply delicious and there was plenty left over. We found room for Mom-Mom's Rice Pudding and Tiramisu too! All in all, a fun night out, with wonderful food, service and friends!
Excellent service- Javas was great! Everything was so tasty!
The perfect combination of quality food/quality service/and a much appreciated lack of pretension.
I am a huge fan of Vetri, so I expected to be as impressed with Amis and obviously from my rating, I was. I would suggest that you make your reservation at least 2 weeks in advance. I made the mistake of making my reservation the week of and OpenTable only had a 9:30 slot available. Not to be deterred, I called earlier in the week and was able to score a spot at the chefs counter at 6:00!
Once I was shown to my seat, Javas introduced himself and he totally took care of me the rest of the evening. For starters, I had their house made focaccia bread which was so good, that I had him box of the remainder to go. I was not going to drink but the Ugo looked so good and refreshing that I couldn't help myself; I wish I could have had 3 more.
For starters I had the baked pecorino w/almond honey and it was amazeballs!!! While still dining on the pecorino, I placed my order for the bucatini w/jalapeno and almond pesto and it arrived before I was finished so that by the time I was ready to eat, it was cold. I asked Javas to just reheat it and instead, he packed it to go for me and then gave me a fresh meal to enjoy! Who does that?!
Of course, dining out is not complete without dessert, so I had the tartufo al bacio and I was in heaven!
When I got my bill, I noticed the dessert was missing and when I inquired, Javas had comped it! I had read in a previous review that Javas was amazing and I concur. He is definitely an asset to Amis! I hope my tip showed my appreciation for him, his generosity, and his attention to providing the best service to the diners in his section. Not only will I recommend Amis to everyone I know, but I will also suggest they try to sit in Javas section because that killer smile will have you wanting to come back every week. Thanks for a wonderful evening!
Great food and fantastic service.
Great food and service, but too noisy for good conversation.
Birthday celebration- had a wonderful time! Service & food were equally excellent.
Wonderful experience here, just like the last time we went for dinner! We were seated soon after getting into the restaurant, and our waitress was very attentive and friendly. She explained the specials to us and was so great with checking on us every so often. Anytime our glasses were looking low, she would come by for refills. After each course, she came by to clean the table and replace our plates and silverware. Oh, and the food was amazing!
This place was fantastic for Valentine's Day! The menu wasn't overwhelming, and it was clear that they had mastered all their meal offerings. The cacio e pepe was superb, as was the ravioli, and we also enjoyed our octopus, meatball, and baked pecorino. The lighting was a but dark which made it hard for pictures, but that would be my only complaint!
Would definitely recommend this hidden gem for a date night. The price wasn't too pricey and we didn't wait too too long food our food considering it was Valentine's day.
This place was loud and seemed a bit pretentious.
The menu identified vegan items but then when I asked the server she said that they were prepared with butter . It was the worst Valentine’s Day meal I’ve had. I will not be going back.
Authentic Roman dishes, great innovative pasta dishes, love the grill octopus, my fave pasta is the bucatini with jalapenos and almonds. Reasonable price carafe of house wine, excellent house made bread.
IF YOU'RE LOOKING FOR A CASUAL , RELAXED ATMOSPHERE W/ CREATIVE & AMAZING FOOD...IMPECCABLE SERVICE
1ST CLASS MANAGEMENT TEAM THAT IS FRIENDLY & PAYS CLOSE ATTENTION TO DETAIL
ALWAYS A LOVELY EXPERIENCE
Food and service terrific. Will return. Parking a bit tough, however.
On arrival, we decided to sit at the bar instead of table. It was a good choice. My wofe and I sat side by side and enjoyed a nice romantic night together. The food was great and the drinks were perfecf.
Very good food with Wonderfull professional service from our server Alishia......great pasta....!
Great warm interesting atmosphere.....like going to my Grandmother's house for Sunday Supper....IF my Grandmother was Italian !( if only that were true!).
Don’t come here if you like traditional Italian dishes. 4 of us ordered something different and the food was just okay. I liked the pictures of food on Yelp but they seem to frequently change their menu. If you get lucky on a good menu than it would be good.
Fabulous as always! We decided to come for an early dinner Super Bowl evening, knowing that it would be quite empty. We sat at the chef's counter which is always fun, but especially that night, since the staff wasn't as busy.
We started with the fried cauliflower (more like roasted since there is no heavy breaking on it) which were great. We also had the fennel salad with a nice dressing to balance it. I'm not usually a fennel lover but I am now! As a nice surprise, the kitchen sent us an orange salad made with Cara Cara oranges which I loved and will try to recreate at home now.
For our mains, I had the pasta special which was striped sea bass puttanesca, made with capers, not olives. Nice and briny! My honey had the pasta with venison sausage which had a nice rich sauce.
We were so full but had to have dessert: Nonna (sp?) pie and they made me a salted butter ice cream chocolate sundae. Heavenly!
From our first encounter with our waitress Sarah to our great chat with Elizabeth the sons chef, it was another phenomenal meal!
go for the pasta (consistently amazing). share the antipasti (fun, creative, tasty).
Always on of our favorite places when we are in the city. Great food and service always.
