Americana, a little gem of a restaurant has been located at the prime corner of 15th Street and Camino Del Mar in Old Del Mar for 12 years. A comfortable and inviting sidewalk café wraps around the restaurant surrounded by lush vegetation and ocean views. Americana serves a great breakfast, lunch & dinner with a full bar in the day light hours. Many say the Bloody Mary’s are the best in the county. Americana Restaurant does not require reservations for Breakfast or Lunch so please come on it. At night time, the lights dim and the restaurant becomes a quaint bistro serving Mediterranean influenced fare with carefully chosen wines and great cocktails. Bon Appetit.

We ordered our food and asked to take our entrees to-go. The waitress was very gracious and accommodating. We enjoyed the bread and butter at the table while waiting. Unfortunately the entrees were a disappointment especially considering what we paid for them. The flatbread was so-so and could have used a little more time in the oven. The grilled vegetable entree was terrible—the greens were bitter and the cabbage had an off flavor. Not at all what we’d hoped for.

One of the worst dinners in a long time. We were visiting for the Christmas holidays from Texas and my teenage daughter and I stopped in for a dinner together for some special time alone to talk. The flatbread was completely wet abd dripping in a puddle of water. The bolognese was also completely saturated in juice and sitting on a huge bowl of dripping water. It was the worst meal we’ve ever had. The manager could have definitely been more apologetic while we asked to forget about the flatbread appetizer and remake the bolognese. She acted like she was doing us a favor that she took the flatbread off the bill, as she well should have. Very disappointing experience during the holidays on a special night out with my daughter.

This restaurant has one of the best locations in town. Unfortunately, based on our experience, one of the two things it has going for it. The other is a bright, very nice waitress. From the moment we walked in the woman we assume was most likely the owner was so unfriendly we felt like we were in the way. We were seated outside (our choice). The iced tea I was served was rancid. The waitress took it away but no offer to make another. We ordered the CRISPY chicken and what was served was undercooked in the middle, dry at the edges with limp skin chicken. The "roasted" brussell sprouts were actually sautéed and undercooked.

The ribs were horrible! So tough you couldn't cut them off the bone with a steak knife. Brussels sprouts undercooked. Waitress was nice, she was new and messed up our check. Will never go back!

Four of us ordered four different things. Everything was delicious - flatbreads, salads, steak, fish! The servers let us change our table when we decided to sit in the sun not the shade. Service was amazing and friendly. Special requests were handled with a "not-a-problem" attitude.

Oh - did I say the food was delicious?

The day of our visit was a sweltering hot "Santa Ana" weather pattern we have a couple times a year in San Diego...temperature hovering close to 100 degrees and we were eagerly looking forward to relaxing at an air-conditioned table for a great meal. As we walked in, an oven blast of wilting air hit us. "We don't have air conditioning," remarked the hostess/server. "Would you like to sit outside?" We debated that, but decided to sit at a north-facing table where occasional breezes would provide some relief from the heat. But any relief was negated by a large squadron of flies that had us waving our arms like we were conducting the San Diego Symphony. "I haven't seen the flies this bad since the horse racing season stopped" (at nearby Del Mar Race Track) said our server Linda. The flies landed directly on our food countless times as we attempted to eat.


I ordered the Jidori Chicken and a side of asparagus. My friend ordered the Grilled Vegetable Stack.

Linda emphasized it was happy hour, and we ordered the Baja Fish Tacos for $6 (regularly $10.25).

The Jidori Chicken, was dry and lacked flavor. Particularly unpleasant was the accompanying lemon-pepper faro risotto, which was very salty. My friend tried it, also finding it unenjoyable. The asparagus had been taken back and re-served and had lost much of its appeal during the wait.

My friend enjoyed her grilled vegetables very much. We also received fresh, hot bread.

When the bill arrived, Linda had charged us the full price of the fish tacos. I called her attention to it and she claimed that, because we received a discount on our meals, we must pay full price for the tacos. I answered by saying the happy hour price was offered to ALL patrons BY THE RESTAURANT who entered during the stated hours. She, and another server who identified herself as the manager, insisted we pay the full price for happy hour tacos.

There was nothing good about our dining experience here. We ordered two specials - one fish and one skirt steak. All of the food was overcooked. Flavors were blah. The service was barely acceptable. The table that was seated next to us (seated after us) received a bread basket whereas we did not get bread until we flagged down our waitress (when she was visible to us - which was seldom) and requested it. The best thing I can say is that they do take the Passport card, so we saved the price of an entree. Regardless, we are unlikely to come back.

Server was polite but completely failed to deliver one of our party their food for 10 minutes after everyone else was served. Turkey meatloaf tasteless. Half price wine was a relative bargain.

Our teens liked it. Good was good. Service was a little slow due to 1 server. However, the restaurant is not that large so it isn't a big deal. We enjoyed it and will be back.

I found Americana through a yelp review in an effort to find a last minute spot for dinner. I had 10 people with me and this was literally the only restaurant that would take us. We basically stumbled upon it. I expected the worst but I was pleasantly surprised. Service was okay. The waiter seemed overwhelmed by our group and distracted. But the food was okay. The burgers look good. But it was a bit pricy... like any California restaurant. Not sure I would go back but it worked for us at the time.

We didn't have a good experience. The restaurant had no record of our Open Table reservation. The waitress was unfriendly, forgot our bread, and overall service was bad. Can't really say anything good about the food, either. We had fried calamari that was very chewy, the pasta was just OK, and the burger was soggy and fell apart. Thank god for the rosemary fries.

We went for dinner Thursday evening. It was not busy at all. Got good table indoors. Outdoor seating was also available. Server was nice but overall service seemed very slow. We only saw one server, may be due to slowe traffic.

Food was excellent. We had great time once food was on the table.

We went again on Sunday for breakfast. This time place was busy and many servers to serve but service seemed slow but faster than dinner time.

Food was great once again.

This place does take passport discount card.

Great place for romantic or family gathering. Good choices for the brunch menu and included few vegetarian choices.

The menu looked promising but, the food was a bit over average. The service was my big issue. The waitress acted over worked and rushed. The hostess/manager (not sure what she was) acted exhausted and started turning off the lights as we were leaving (it as 8:30). We were not the last guest to leave and there were still diners in the restaurant.
I think they should simplify their menu because clearly it's a little too ambitious for the chef.

Americana is excellent for breakfast, but their dinner menu is quite nice too. The food is always fresh and creative. Staff is local and friendly, efficient and responsive. Always a pleasure to eat at Americana.

Food was good and service was quick. We did go on a rainy evening so the restaurant was pretty empty, which may account for that some. The place seemed very busy for breakfast that morning so I take it as a very popular local spot. Although we went to go have a traditional sit down dinner, we opted for just a tapas style meal instead. We ordered sliders, buffalo wings and flat bread (Hawaiian style. i.e. Pineapple and ham). All were very tasty and properly cooked. I ended up eating all the buffalo wings (6 pieces) as they were a little too hot/spicy for the wife, but alright by my taste. We shared the sliders (3) and the flat bread (Appeared to be about 12x6 inches) and had lemonade and Ice tea for drinks, both of which were fine.

Americana provides good, somewhat basic fare in a convenient Del Mar location. The restaurant is very kid-friendly (all the servers that we've had are great with the littles). For example, this visit, we had four adults and three kids and the waitress learned all the kids names and addressed them directly.

We ordered crab cakes, seared ahi, and the steak to share between two adults and a baby. The crab cakes were generously sized (would have fit a bun) and quite tasty - the 9-month-old devoured almost an entire one on her own. The ahi was fresh and very well prepared, with just the slightest sear. Steak was delivered medium, as order, rather than overcooked the way most places seem to any more. In all, a very enjoyable meal.

Our friends ordered a burger, the jidori chicken, a kids' chicken finger plate (shared by a 2- and 4-year-old), and an apple cobbler for the table. They said the food was very good, and the cobbler was definitely a hit with the kids.

The hostess was unconnected. Never welcomed us. Just asked did we want a table and then said ok go pick one. We didn't feel welcome until the waitperson came to take care of us. Also the lighting was quite bright for dinner service.

A warm, inviting atmosphere in the heart of Del Mar offers a menu with something for everyone. I hear it is great for breakfast but dinner (especially the unique Kale salad) was wonderful. The massive banana split was the best I have ever had and perfect as a group dessert.

Americana Restaurant was definitely a poor choice for my family and guests really because of the food. We were a party of seven and each one of us felt disappointed in the taste and quality of our meals. In fact, being quite hungry when we arrived, none of us even completely finished our meals and discussed making dessert at home to satisfy our still somewhat empty stomaches. The very overpriced and disappointing entrees have left us no desire to return. Americana Restaurant has a great location and that's all.

Very European in feel, with Del Mar Village right out the many windows. A block from 15th Street beach scene, perfect for walking to before or after dinner. The best part was the menu, with unusual takes on American-friendly food. A Del Mar neighborhood gem and a very good value with extremely friendly service.
