American Whiskey Ratings and Reviews
We decided to come here for dinner before seeing a movie on a Friday night. I made reservations through OpenTable and they sat us right away in a nice spot towards the back corner. The bar is very long and there were a lot of people, but you couldn't hear them where we were, which was nice. Our waitress was sweet and patient since two of our members were running late. I got the burger with crinkle cut fries, we got the small venison burger, tater tots and the ribs. We all loved our burgers and the fries were very tasty and nicely salted. My friend liked the ribs, but said it was hard to cut through. The checks were all done on a tablet, which was convenient for saving time and we could all easily split the check. Overall, nice atmosphere, good food and good service.
I love this place because of the whiskey conoisseurial theme, the high-quality beverage list (the cocktails in particular are exquisite), and the knowledgeable and attentive bartenders. Plus, it's between my office and my commute hub.
However, I hate the cavernous atmosphere and the nouveau-polished concrete decor. It makes the place 3x louder than it needs to be, no matter how fashionable it was 4 years ago. I hate the fact that the place is frequently so full of frat-boy young professionals (who are often dismissive or oblivious to other clientele), to the point where it's difficult to even get a seat at the bar some days. Good for the owners, but tough to dine and drink as a single woman, as I often do.
I also find the menu a bit precious. Certain items are excellent, like the venison sliders and the broccoli doused in powdered cheese, but I feel it's veered into precious plates and a tad too far off real, varied meal options.
Had to ask for ketchup. Had to ask for salt & pepper. Had to ask for more water. Had to ask for more drinks. Appetizer plates were not removed from the table before the mains came out so we also had to clear the table for the server. Extremely low lighting & yes we are in the late 40s age bracket, but we had to use the flashlights on our phones to read the menu. And a very limited menu. However, both meals were tasty & staff was friendly. Atmosphere in the bar very fun, dining room a little lacking. Not an awful experience but wouldn't go back.
My wife and I went there before we went to MSG to see Billy Joel, so proximity was a selling point. The food was good and so was the drink selection. It's pricey but it's Manhattan so considering that it wasn't too bad. Our waitress was awful. She disappeared after our food came and I had to go directly to the bar twice to get my wife and I drinks. My wife is not a big drinker either so it's not like she was knocking them back all that fast. Besides that the bartenders were good, courteous and efficient, I think it was just our waitress that was poor. Would recommend.
This restaurant is getting very disappointment with every visit. It used to have grilled sandwich for lunch before. Now it has bird sized portions. I being a vegetarian, it literally has nothing to choose from. It had roasted cauliflower for a month or 2 which I used to order, even thats gone now because they say its seasonal. They have no choices left at all. Very very disappointing! All I can eat there is green salad and I think it will also disappear one day.
I've been to American Whiskey twice and I love this place. I appreciate that they respected our reservation despite having a busy dinner service...they didn't even have menus when we were seated but it wasn't a huge deal.
The cocktails here are worth it and so is the food. It's a simple, straightforward menu (brussel sprouts were a fave, also grabbed the burger) and for the dining experience, service, and setting - it's a great overall value.
Excellent selection of liquor. Food was good, I had the beer brine chicken, a little salty but I guess understandable due to the technique. Service was ok, left in need a couple of times but nothing excessive. Server did spill the juices from the chicken on the table and a little on my leg. Manager offered a round of what we were drinking on the house to make up for it without any prodding on my part, which was great. Unfortunately he brought us the 8yr version instead of the 12yr MacAllen we were drinking, it was quickly evident to me and my brother. We didn't say anything, felt it would have been tacky since it was free, but the experience left me feeling awkward about the restaurant. Positive is it was a block away from MSG, had decent food and nice atmosphere, but nothing that blew me away. Not disappointed we tried it but not likely we'd return anytime soon.
Made reservations a few weeks ago. When we arrived on time, we were given a high top table immediately adjacent to the door by the large bust bar. It was below freezing that night and each time the door opened we were frozen with a fierce wind! We asked to be moved and we were told that there was no other tables available. Service was quite slow. Food was good. Too expensive for a hamburger and fries.
Good whiskey. Terrible service.
Arrived on time for the reservation and was promptly seated. However, and unfortunately, that was the end of the good service. After we ordered drinks and they were delivered, no one returned to take our meal order for an hour. Only when I tracked down a staff member were we able to finally place our order.
Food was relatively good, and the whiskey selecting is excellent, but the service quality makes it hard to want to return aside from a happy hour.
Our reservation was for 5:30pm. We ordered food at 5:40, and kept checking in with the waitress. She brought our drinks and kept saying our food was "on the way" ...by 6:45 we asked for our drink bill and left. We were still late for the 7pm concert at MSG, which our waitress knew we had tickets for. Oh, and did I mention that all the tables around us who sat down around the same time (or after) us were served their food while we starved? Horrible service.
Unfortunately I really do not have anything nice to say about this restaurant We got there at 5 before a concert at MSG to celebrate my nieces birthday and they were not busy enough for the mistakes that ensued. Took forever to get drinks, we got served 3 meals while the 4th person watched us eat steaks one rib eye and one hangar that one to be sent back because they were ordered medium and both came out raw and even after sending back one to return charred beyond edible the sandwich my sister ordered had still not arrived, which was a short rib that tasted like it was braised in oil. So very disappointed for 350 we should have went somewhere else.
Everything top notch. Was there for pre-MSG concert on a Friday night. The place was packed, but that didn't slow things down. Food service and bar service at table-side was fast, courteous, and attentive. Food quality was phenomenal, whiskey drinks perfect. Wouldn't hesitate to return.
American Whiskey is the kind of place that exceeds expectations. Good bourbon, good bone broth, good food. It's sort of a sports bar atmosphere, but thats OK.
One comment: Hostess staff is a bit "strict" about where people sit and what they order (in the bar etc) and that's probably just management inexperience. Let your hostesses focus on customers, you'll be happier and so will your patrons.
American Whiskey is a great location for a bite to eat and a drink before a concert or game at MSG. The wait staff is super nice but service is slow, the drinks are good but small and the food is pretty good but some of it is overpriced, like the crudite which literally was a few carrots, parsnips and radishes that were approx ONE inch long!!! The trumpet mushrooms and grilled rapini were delicious and great for vegans! The guys were happy with their burgers so it definitely has pros and cons. I would go back but definitely never order the crudite again, although it did give us a good laugh!
