American Tap Room - Clarendon - Permanently Closed Ratings and Reviews
We sat on the patio and enjoyed the evening weather . Service was attentive and prompt. Food left a little to be desired - both a steak and hamburger had to be sent back because they were well done and had asked for rare/medium rare. The steak especially is hard to understand - not sure how rare = well done. The pretzel app was good if a bit too salty while the wings were a little cold when they arrived. Beer prices were high, even for Clarendon, probably about $1 more per beer than you would expect.
We used to go regularly and loved the burgers. The turkey burger is no longer on the menu. My salmon Caesar had a minuscule portion of salmon that was somewhat over-cooked. Service was still very friendly and it is a very nice atmosphere, but I don't like how the menu has changed.
Have been to this restaurant about two dozen times since it opened in Clarendon. Everything has gone downhill -- the food choices, the portions, the attentiveness by the staff. Meanwhile only one thing has gone up: the prices. "Corporate," as I was told by a manager when I complained about my disappointing recent experience, has forced the Arlington location to either raise prices or cut portions. It's a downhill spiral, sadly. There are lots of choices in the Clarendon and nearby areas...American Tap Room needs to get it together to remain an appealing option.
Saturday brunch was not crowded, but they must have been short staffed. We waited about 45 minutes to order because our server never came back. Eventually we asked another server to help us out. She did her best to fix the problem, as did the chef who came out to ask folks if their food was okay, but neither the server who caused the problem nor management took time to apologize for the poor service.
I ordered the pancakes, which were delicious but the portion was enough for three people! I took home what I couldn't finish. I also had a bloody mary, which was fresh and fantastic. My friends were also happy with their choices, but everyone agreed the portions were very large.
Always a good time at ATR Clarendon! Fun just to hang out at the bar, as well.
If this place was closer, we would dine here more than we already do. The service is excellent and they take care to make sure your dish is prepared just as you like. Side dish substitutions are no problem. The service staff will take the time to make recommendations. The atmosphere is quiet away from the bar, and a little nosier near the bar, but never loud unless you are actually in the bar itself during a major sporting event.
Oh - the on tap beers list is absolutely one of the best in the area! They always have some truly outstanding beers to try. Take your server's recommendation and you most likely will not be disappointed (unless it is a type of beer you just don't like).
Athena is a great server, that's why I keep coming back. She is knowledgeable, makes great suggestions and is attentive. The food is good, last Saturday night the bar was loud and crowded, a bit too noisy for me, but all the patrons were having a ball. I'll stick to the dining room.
Our extended family plus 2 one-year-olds had a superb lunch (great food, really!) with excellent service on Sunday. The staff were very accommodating with table-chair arrangements, highchairs, etc. All of the food arrived simultaneously, hot, and well presented. Waiting staff was outstanding, attentive, all you could ask for. This is a favorite place, though we can't enjoy it as much as we'd like to.
Food was very good - my grilled salmon was nicely prepared with sautéed spinach. Extensive beer list was a plus; one friend had a flight; I enjoyed my locally-brewed draft. Noise level moderate, but the restaurant was quiet as it was a Tuesday evening. Very comfy leather chairs at each table. Server knew a lot about beer!
We have been to ATP on many occasions and enjoyed it. Not this time. The waitress was friendly; however, we learned that the beer ordered by a member of our group was unavailable. The waitress served everyone else and only brought the second choice AFTER THE MEAL WAS SERVED. The portions - especially the crab cakes served with a small dollop of mashed potatos - were disappointing. The "jambalaya" was a mush of fish and sausage - unrecognizable as the classic Creole dish to a native New Orleanian. Finally, the staff hovered around our table and grabbed plates as they were finished. One of us had not even put the last bit of food into her mouth and the hand was reaching. Why? There were plenty of empty tables and there was no line at the entrance. Don't you RESPECT your guests? "Put the hay down where the goats can get it."
We really enjoy the outdoor dining area offered by ATR. I also enjoy the good selection of beers on tap. They always have some interesting beer choices. The food is just different enough to not be the same old same old without being strange or trying too hard to be unusual. Get the pretzel and try the marshmallow dip. You won't be disappointed.
We dined outdoors on the back patio and our area seemed to be receiving very slow service. We often had to wait up to 5-10 minutes to get drinks. Food was very good but also slow. Almost 20 minutes for appetizer to arrive. We weren't in a hurry so we didn't mind. Would still recommend but service may be faster inside.
Even for Clarendon, which stakes its reputation on bar crawls and frat boys chasing tail, this place is an anomaly. The menu is priced to pay the expensive rent, but the food is no better than Denny's. The service is all empty enthusiasm, usually getting it wrong. Ultimately, the name of the joint says it all: come here for beer, America!
My spinach salad was drab, had to ask for blue cheese, The"heavy" meat/egg dishes around us looked gerat -- too bad that if you order a salad the same care is not given to presentation and susbstance. The. waiter was MIA most of the time... very disappointing esp. because someone had recommended the Tap to us.
I was in the area for business and wanted something different for lunch. I'm glad I picked this restaurant. The service was excellent. Eric ourr server was very pleasant and made our dining experience very pleasurable. I ordered a cheeseburger and it was over cooked, but other than that everything was good. I would definitely return.
The excellent service, great atmosphere, and excellent beer selection are all reasons to come here. The food is what will keep you coming back. Instead of our usual and excellent pretzel appetizer, we tried the hummus this time and we were not disappointed. Great flavors creatively plated! Their menu always balances creative with comfortable. What you get here is new, but at the same time familiar. We will be back.
I have always enjoyed American Tap Room so when I was trying to find a good restaurant that we could attend after a special "girls day" treat with my niece and her friend, I chose American Tap Room. I made reservations for 4;15 p.m. as we were eating between the ballet and another engagement in the evening. We were a few minutes late for our reservation but that didn't seem to matter as when we arrived there was no one at the front desk. We waited for 10 minutes before anyone came to the desk and then the hostess showed attitude and no friendliness. My request for a table near the fireplace was ignored and we given a booth -- though we could see the fireplace. (And the place was empty so there was no question of a table being available.) The menu seemed to be changed and the pizza that I remembered from the last time was no longer available - in fact no pizzas were available (one of the reasons for selecting the restaurant). One of the children ordered the mini chicken and waffles and received mini cheeseburgers. Took about 10 minutes to get it corrected. I ordered meatloaf but ATR was already "out." at 4:30 in the afternoon. My second choice was OK but not as good as the meatloaf. When it came time for dessert, we were told that the kids got free dessert -- and we were charged for them. My niece requested a scoop of vanilla ice cream (with two cherries) instead of the ice cream sundae. She received the sundae which then had to be taken away and the plain ice cream brought. While our waiter was friendly and nice, there was no question he was off his game that day. Then when the bill arrived, we were charged for both the mini cheeseburgers and the mini waffles so we had to wait for that to be corrected. We ended up being late for our next engagement partly because of all the issues with the meals and the bill. Don't know if I would want to recommend this place to any of my friends now.
As usual the service was excellent right form the start. Our waiter gave me an excellent recommendation on a new beer to try. It was spot on as he described. The pretzel appetizer is not to be missed here. My seared tuna salad for an entrée was great as was my dining partner's salmon. We will of course be back, as this is quickly becoming one of our favorite restaurants in this price range.
My husband and I decides to go here for dinner before going out with friends. We made reservations and when we arrived we were told it would be a few minutes they were clearing the table. We ended up waiting almost 30 minutes past our reservation time before we finally got seated. Once seated, our service was alright, but our waiter left half way through our meal leaving us to be served on by whoever was around. The food was decent, but nothing spectacular. I had the special, crab Mac 'n Cheese, but there was very little crab in the dish. I would give the restaurant one more chance, but it definitely would not be my first choice.
