Nestled in the heart of downtown Lafayette, we invite you to step out of your comfort zone, and try what everyone has been talking about. With fantastic reviews from Diablo Magazine and other local foodie news outlets, American Kitchen has quickly become the new go-to place in Lamorinda. And with the largest and most inviting patio in the area, there is no better place to enjoy California outdoor dining. Cheers!
Delicious food, so many great choices, I will definitely be back to try them all!
I went here for brunch for my cousin’s birthday. Had reservations but still end up waiting for a table even though the place wasn’t completely full. Waiter was nice and everything came out on time. I ended up getting charged twice for my bill which is hard to believe since I didn’t split it and we didn’t order that much. Don’t think I’ll be coming back here again.
We went here to celebrate my moms bday and it was amazing!
Great for breakfast or lunch
Nice comfortable casual breakfast. Frankly nicer than the former chow next door
The location is lovely but the space is dirty. Walls, floors a bit grungy.
The server was overworked and the manager who came to help made no eye contact. I didn’t feel welcome.
We showed up a little early for our reservation and you would have thought we were 20 minutes late for it based on the reaction of the host that greeted us. He was short, NOT warm and friendly and told the 6 of us (all adults) form a single file line outside the door. That experience, unfortunately, set the tone for our time there. We understand that being a table of 6 we are considered a larger party that most, BUT the food came out so staggered and by the time the last person got their food, the first's was getting cold. We sat inside which was nice, but the noise level kept us from having a good conversation. The waitress was so-so and rarely came around - no offer to refill coffee, water, etc. We will not be returning.
I’m likely never to go back. The classics (omelets) seem fine. However they miss the mark with trendier items like avocado toast. Not enough avocado, too many greens over dressed make for soggy toast. The worst was the farrow oatmeal. My daughter ordered thinking that it would be close to oatmeal. She didn’t like it and sent it back. The chef/owner refused to take the $10 charge off the check. I tipped the waiter since it wasn’t his fault. He wasn’t very skilled at handling a customer who didn’t like their food. I don’t like written Inc bad reviews but I gave them an opportunity to make right of the situation and here I am writing this review.
This is the trending farm to table environment. It was just OK. I had a burger and fries. The meat was over cooked but had good flavor. The fries were OK. The door was open and the dining room had flies on the tables, which is gross and unappetizing. I wanted to really like it but, in fact, it was "just ok".
Perhaps many years ago this was a neighborhood gathering place but it is now pretty run down. I imagine that the owners have seen several higher-end restaurants fill downtown Lafayette but they have just not stepped up to meet the challenge. Servers really tried so I gave them more stars than the actually food itself. The onion rings were greasy, a hot dog came out cold and was sent back and the fish on the slider was lacking taste. The two other sliders (beef and chicken) were fine. The table really needed a good scrubbing. When we arrived, we were the only ones there and by the time we left there were maybe 4 tables occupied. For a Fri night, that was telling. On the plus side, the prices were reasonable. So this may be a place for others looking for a quick inexpensive meal but we'll try some other places when we visit Lafayette next. With some attention to cleanliness and other details, it does have potential as the location is great.
My family and I loved our experience. Tahoe meets cape code. Food was soooopo good. Service was world class. And I never ever felt like I needed to dress up. Go. You will enjoy yourself.
What a charming location with tasty food, wonderful service and a diverse menu
not lnly was the food good, but the owner went out of his way ti XXINNIDte us with everthing he could possibly do
Food was very good - but especially loved the pulled pork bbq nachos that my granddaughter ordered. Wonderful smokey flavor - even on the chips themselves.
Shrimp scampi dish was not good. everything else was fine. patio area is awesome. Service is excellent!
Tables were dirty and sticky. Avocado toast was horrible! French toast was okay. Cafe mocha was fair but, the waiter never bothered to bring sugar or, spoon and disappeared. Door to the kitchen facing the parking lot was open and the kitchen looked gross with flies swarming outside and birds gathered around it...
Service was great and food was delicious. Portions are a good size so you don't overeat.
Bottomless mimosas ....excellent!
Very spotty. Mushroom soup excellent, meat loaf inedibly overcooked. Great fries, fish tacos with fish and cabbage, nothing else, cold beans in the side. “Power” salad swimming in dressing.
Service was decent but the kitchen was very slow.
I like the eating outdoors facility. Still not enough for me to return.
Charming place, great location. Food was good... in a community of excellent/ outstanding/ world class food, I am always a little disappointed with good. The serivce was off, slow to help, did not check up on our food, etc. The strangest part was after having signed the bill the waiter snacked up the signed bill and ran off. From what we can tell, the wrong bill was signed though the receipt in our hands was correct. We get it, mistakes happen but 30 sec of explaination rather than a snatch and run would have made our meal more pleasant. The only form of communication is when the bill was redropped (as in an actual flop in front of us- comment made as leaving) "This is better, a dollars cheaper for you."
This was the first time my family and I went to American Kitchen and it far exceeded our expectations. The food was phenomenal! I had the Mexicali Burger and it was truly one of the best burgers I have ever had in my life. The wait staff was also very friendly and efficient. I am definitely going back to American Kitchen!
Father’s Day brunch. Everyone loved their meals. The stuffed French toast was different and delicious.
Any reservation I would make would be with letting my friend know that service was VERY SLOW both times I have been there.
Great place for American comfort food! We especially love that you can get breakfast there all day, even for dinner. Huevos Rancheros and the bbq chicken Mac n Cheese were fantastic. Our fave desert is s’mores, of course!
Probably the best macaroni and cheese I’ve ever had. It was the truffle mac & cheese. Recommended by our server and totally worth it. Server was great! She was attentive, knowledgeable, and good at her job
The food is ok, but I wish we could get a Lamorinda restaurant with really good food. The ambiance is nice and comfortable. The prices are a bit high for the quality of the food.
Nice quiet place for a leisurely lunch. The best part is you can order from the breakfast menu at lunch.
This is our go-to place for brunch after long runs or bike rides. Very accomodating staff, laid back vibe. Great selection of brunch and lunch items, and yummy juices. Will keep heading there for sure!
The service was horrible and the server was just not friendly. When asked specific questions about the menu due to medical issues she was unwilling to contact management to ask if one ingredient could be a substitute. Then because I am also on a Keto Diet, she said well you can always order sides. How can a restaurant stay in business with customer service like this? I will never be back to this place again, and would not recommend anyone to come here. There are much better opportunities to invest your well-earned income. Oh, her excuse for the no substitutions was the kitchen staff get to overwhelmed and can't handle it. (Wait isn't that what they are paid for?.... Or maybe you should hire a better level of the kitchen staff.)
Great food, good portions. Fast and easy. Thank you!
Visited American Kitchen on Easter Sunday. The restaurant was very busy but I assume they knew how many reservations they had confirmed and should have staffed for that. The manager (owner?) checked us in very rudely - when we requested a change to outdoor seating because of the noise inside he stated "you will get what I give you." We should have left then. It took over a half hour to place our order and almost another hour to receive our food. When I asked to see the manager and pointed out that two tables of people seated after us were served before our order came out, he simply stated it was Easter and nothing could be done. I ordered a steak salad rare and got well done. When I pointed this out my plate was removed very rudely and we were ignored thereafter. The food was mediocre at best (except for good onion rings). I would never return.
We did staff up for Easter adding a 5th server. I NEVER said to you "you will get what I give you" When our sever came to take your food order, you were not ready. You asked to speak to the manager. I walked over to your table and you were agitated that you did not have your food. I went to check and was back in minutes with your food. I came back 10 minutes later to check on you. Your friend looked up at me and to my complete surprise screamed F**K U AHOLE!! Unacceptable behavior!!!
I usually love this place. We went for Easter brunch and it was a disaster. I had a reservation for 1:15 and we didn’t get seated until 1:45. The services was very inattentive and had to be hunted down for literally everything including silverware. She not once came by to update us on our orders which took 35 minutes after we finally had gotten to a table. Even for paying the bill we had to ask someone to send her back. The food was good but the overall experience very disappointing. They just could not keep up.
Absolutely amazing food wonderful service. Great server. Love this place!!
Our service person was very nice and efficient.
Coffee was not great, too acidic for my taste.
Food was tasty but portions were small.
Overall experience was fine.
A most awful outdoor lunch experience ... grilled cheese sandwich was cold with wrong salad ... took 20 minutes to redo, while my wife finished her lunch ... owner aloof & grumpy, but comp'd my meal and a beer ... while waiting, saw a waiter grab a towel, clean his shoes, then clean chairs with same towel ... same towel used to clean tables ... Lafayette deserves better ... will never be back
It was our family’s first time going. We were created by name at door and promptly seated. Food and great and service prompt and attentive. My son said shrimp Po boy was just as good as the ones from Louisiana. I would highly suggest this place for a family dinner. Price was on point as well no issues from us.
Cute place in downtown Lafayette that my husband and I went to on Friday night. We had their mac and cheese and eggs Benedict, both of which were tasty. We won't go back, however, due to the large number of screaming, out-of-control kids, running in and out of the restaurant, who were literally on top of the outside tables. Noise level was out of control; there was no way to have a conversation with each other. It's too bad, because it seemed like a good place to try for breakfast. I have a feeling that would be even worse than dinner.
Excellent food, excellent service. It is child friendly and dog friendly. Inside the noise level is high so not good for the hard of hearing folks but it works well outside. Must try for anyone visiting Lafayette. A family owned restaurant with high quality food and service.
Went to meet friends who we haven't seen in a while. I was pleasantly surprised to discover that they take reservations. Hardly anyone takes reservations anymore, which I think is a very greedy approach and certainly not "Guest First". Having managed several restaurants in the past, I get that and really appreciate that AK is more geared to the customer rather than the bank. That said, the food was great, the ambiance friendly and family like. Parking was easy, but we went pretty early on a Sunday. I would definitely recommend AK.
American kitchen was a delightful brunch stop on a Saturday. Lots of families and a warm inviting atmosphere.
