Alvin and Friends Ratings and Reviews
I've had many wonderful experiences here, but this time things were not up to their usual high standards. Some dishes were overcooked, others undercooked, some lacked all of the ingredients. We needed attention from two waiters to address mistakes in the orders placed and presented. Hopefully next time, Alvin and Friends will be back on their game.
Not my favorite place in new Rochelle.
Had dinner the four of us on a Saturday night and it took a long time for a server to begin. Then the drink were warm, and took a long time. Salad arrived with walnuts instead of pecans as written in the menu. Being allergic to walnuts, I sent it back. Soup arrived, mild warm. Three strikes. After that we were taken care of pretty well.
Bill came and only the espressos and one drink was removed from the bill. Not worth it.
Probably won't be back. :-(
Terrific restaurant! We have been away for a while and hadn't a chance to visit over the past year. Always one of our favorites and it is even better now that when we last went! Beautiful space, great bar, excellent food, good, professional and friendly service and always Alvin keeping an eye on things and greeting his guests! Looking forward to going back often now that we are back in the area.
The worst service we have experienced in a restaurant of this caliber--shame on the owners. They had one waiter for over 10 tables in their main dining room on a Saturday night. We had to ask several times if we could order drinks--we waited for our salad appetizers for over an hour. Dinner came an hour after the salad course--but again, we had to ask several times for the waiter to check on our order, finally getting up and involving the owners. The dinner in total took 3 hours and the lack of service was painful -- the owner did offer us a free round of drinks and even offered to pay for the one desert we ordered--only to have the second round of drinks and the desert show up on our bill, not once but twice--so we had to have the bill redone 3x before it was correct. It was also a birthday dinner—and, we had asked for a candle to be put into the birthday woman’s desert. We even wrote these instruction on our Openable reservation and spoke to the hostess when we arrived. She confirmed this would be done--needless to say, they did not put the candle in the desert. Clearly—no one remembered. When we were finally able to leave, they offered each couple a $25 gift certificate—we, were insulted by this amount and gave the gift certificates back, you could not buy a dinner entrée at this restaurant for $25. After this, they said they would credit our cards back for the entire dinner--we have not yet seen the credits online. Overall, this was a miserable experience that had the owners been on top of the situation could easily have been avoided. Really tragic--as the food is excellent.
My friends and I have been to Alvin and Friends before for lunch, brunch, and meetings. I have always loved the food and the service. This was our first time back to lunch since you opened again for lunch. What one friend ordered first was not available so she ordered something else. It turned out the grilled cheese was burnt on one side and the cheese was not melted. My other friend and I both ordered chicken wings. Hers came out first, twenty -five minutes later, with my side dish and we had a very long wait for my wings, so my greens got cold. The waitress was very apologetic and very nice, but overall, we were not pleased. We meet once a month for lunch, but unfortunately we will not be going here again.
Second time we celebrated our wedding anniversary here. Food is always excellent. Servers are always courteous and knowledgeable. We feel comfortable is recommending this restaurant and bringing friends and family. I highly recommend the oxtail with peas and rice. Friends and family don't mind driving from Brooklyn to meet us here for dinner.
Disappointing dinner. Drinks were good as was the appetizer (we shared the special sampler platter). However main courses were poor. I had the southern fried chicken (all white meat) and it was very dry. The side dishes were too spicy for me; I ate some of the mac & cheese but after tasting the braised greens couldn't eat them. My husband had seafood linguini which was ok but not great. Be warned: food is quite spicy even when the menu doesn't say that.
Decor is good and live music is a plus.
Food was great. Service was unacceptable for the prices that they are charging. Appetizers came out in a timely manner but our drinks arrived 10 mins later. And we our drinks first! Entrees came out in a timely manner. We ordered dessert and coffee. Coffee arrived 15 mins after we had finished dessert after asking 3 times. And we were charged for them!! Hard to recommend Alvin and Friends after this experience.
Food was delicious! The owner (Alvin) greeted all the tables -- and he even did the artwork hanging on the walls. I really loved the appetizers, the main dish (I had the pulled pork which had a mole-type sauce that was fantastic), and the desserts (banana bread pudding and the key lime pie). Overall excellent -- albeit somewhat pricey. Also, on a Saturday night, parking near the restaurant was difficult to find (although not the fault of the restaurant).
Was new to the area and searched open table + Yelp for a good restaurant and what we found was Alvin and friends. Was pleasantly surprised by the live jazz (Saturday night) and that seems to be the normal here in the weekends.
Tried Alvins secret punch - delicious! Shrimp and grits - fantastic - and and order of the kale and quinoa... very good.
Alvin himself came to our table and welcomed us. He's extremely personable and it gave the night a very nice touch. Will return!!
Great ambiance with fabulous art beautifully displayed. Sea bass was excellent and shrimp with grits was spectacular. Duck appetizer and arugula salad also very good. Excellent cheese cake, interesting rice creme brûlée. Great cosmos and good wine list. Attentive and friendly service.
Although not regulars Alvin came by to say hello. Worth the trip and yes, we will become regulars!
The food is great! The service is even better, my only gripe I think they can give you a little bit more food, but all in all I love this place I will be back again. Oh! I forgot to mention the owner (Alvin) walks around and greets everyone. Thanks Alvin for a great evening!
My husband andI met a friend here for Saturday night dinner for the first time. Loved it! Great ambiance, delicious food and live music. The owner actually came over to the table and introduced himself. The only downside was the live music was loud which at times made conversation difficult. I would definately recommend this restaurant!
Lovely restaurant, interesting menu of traditional Southern food with a Caribbean twist. Alvin, the owner visits often and greets each table, a warm and friendly touch that makes you feel very welcome. The shrimp and grits is very good ,our friend raved about the sea food pasta.
Our waiter was attentive but seemed stretched, my only complaint was we didn't get the marvelous corn muffins until late in the meal and I had to ask. They need to offer more than one per person, the corn muffins are very good.
I was looking for a new place for brunch on my "go to" app, Open Table when I found this gem in New Rochelle. I love everything about this restaurant. From the paintings on the wall (painted by the owner) the deliciously, authentic island/southern cuisine, the great live music to the excellent service. I appreciated the owner stopping by our table to introduce himself and then looked for us as we were leaving to thank us for coming in.
I had the fried chicken and waffles. The chicken was well seasoned with island spices and the waffle was light and airy. My friend had the cooked down salt fish with fried dumplings stating it was amazing from the first bite to the last.
We couldn't pass on dessert so ordered the rice pudding créeme brûlée and the white chocolate banana bread pudding. Both did not disappoint. Perfect end to a perfect meal.
I can't wait to share this place with my fellow foodies. I will definitely be back.
My husband and I celebrated an intimate 20th wedding anniversary Sunday brunch at Alvin and Friends. We totally enjoyed the ambience, jazz music and the food. The wait staff was attentive, cordial and helpful. Being a Caribbean, African American female, I was pleased to the variety of foods that satisfied my palate and cultural background. I was equally pleased to see the ethnic diversity that frequents this establishment. It is refreshing!
The only comment is the Curry Crab Chowder, which was delicious, BUT did not have enough crabmeat.
Besides that, we are eager to return to experience a weeknight jazz ensemble as well as taste the chicken and waffles.
Our 17th Anniversary and 2nd visit to Alvin's. We returned for the food, the service, the music, the vibe - what's left? Met with a smile by everyone from the greeter through our check. The cuisine is Soul Food & Caribbean and the variety is just right. Jerk? Seafood? Vegan? Starters? Large plates? Desserts? It's all there, and everything we've had has been generous and excellent. Mixed drinks and cocktails are also done to perfection. The physical environment feels spacious in contrast to other live music restaurants where the layout leaves little space for each table - not here. And don't miss the wonderful hand-painted art all around, done by a local artist who I won't name - go and see.
And the music? The best we've heard INside and OUTside of NYC. During this visit, the Joey Berkley Quartet were amazing, dynamic, top-of-their-(and anyone else's)-game musicians. We were floored by their rendition of "The Nearness Of You."
If you haven't given Alvin & Friends a try - now's the time!
I ate brunch at Alvin and Friends with my 10 yr old daughter on a Saturday afternoon. The food was delicious as well as my white sangria. The staff was friendly. The owner personally introduced himself to the individuals at each table. From the afro Caribbean decor on the walls to the soft jazz music, Alvin and Friends provides a classy mix between American and traditional Caribbean cuisine.
Alvin and his knowledgeable, energetic staff never disappoint. Lively hot spot in Westchester. I've been several times. I've never had the same thing twice and I've never been disappointed. Mixed cocktails are creative, beautiful and the first sip is always followed by a smile (You should test this phenomenon). The ambiance is fantastic and live music and outdoor patio make Alvin & Friends a neighborhood treat.
My husband took me to Sunday Brunch. It was one of the best experiences that I had in a long time. The Resturante itself is amazing with wonderful lighting, paintings and the view. The music, food and drinks were excellent. The Coconut cheesecake was delicious and I guarantee no one has ever had better. I considered myself a chef and also can make a decent Cheesecake but I couldn't touch that. The entire experience was wonderful Alvin and his staff are phenomenal, and I will be back.
I recently ate dinner at Alvin & Friends with my son and a friend. We all three enjoyed our meal. The cocktails -- rum punch and pomegranate martini -- were great. We had wings two ways -- rum punch and jerk -- and enjoyed both. The popcorn shrimp was a stand out. The decor, which mostly consists of vibrantly colored paintings of women, is charming. I would love to go back some time as there were plenty of other dishes on the menu that I would be curious to try.
