Great food. Didn’t like the waffles but the Mac and cheese and the greens were amazing. The carrot cake and the bread pudding was bomb. Will be back to try dinner.
The service wasn't the best, but the manager came by and saved the day.
Although the food was delicious, service unfortunately made for a rather disappointing date night. It was our first time at this establishment and service went from overbearing and incessant to almost nonexistent. At first, our waiter was too attentive; so much so that my girlfriend and I felt rushed to provide him with our drink and appetizer orders. Then about an hour minuets later our waiter seemed to disappear. MY girlfriend and I were ready to go and wrap up the dinner about 30 minutes before ever seeing our waiter again. Once our waiter finally appeared again my girlfriend asked that he wrap up her remains ( about have of the portion of shrimp and grits). The waiter promptly took her place and my girlfriend repeated please wrap that up, he then took my empty plate and PLACED MY EMPTY PLATE ONTO HER REMAINING SHRIMP AND GRITS. We were both astonished and shocked to say the least. I myself definitely heard my girlfriend ask twice for her dish to be wrapped up, but more importantly, having worked in the food service industry, if for any reason he was uncertain, why wouldn't he ask if she was done? There was clearly a good amount of food left on her plate so the waiter said "oh sorry I didn't know do you still want it" and she said yes. I am not sure where his brain was that evening but unfortunately the service ruined our first time dining experience at this establishment.
Many dishes 86 (unavailable) on a Friday night. In addition to signature dished, immediately told several vegan options not available (menu boasts vegan options and then cut in half upon arrival). Overall experience still impressive. Owners presence and involvement does make it a special dining experience. Fried green tomatoes so delicious. Would definitely go back....
As always, every aspect of our experience at Alvin's was exceptional!
Went out for dinner and drinks with friends on a Thursday night. The live band ended early, the place was not as lively as expected. It took 15 minutes for two of us to get menus and nearly 25 to get drinks!! We had to flag a waiter every time we needed something, and then again the wait for a drink was beyond long.
I have been here many times and this was the first time it was actually terrible. It seemed there was a private party going on in the main dining room the night I went so we sat in the back which was lovely and the live music was fantastic, but the food and the service was terrible. It seemed there was only 1 waiter for all the tables in the back area and the busboy/girl services were way off. They had no idea what was going on in the back room at all. No one knew who ordered what food or drinks/cocktails. I ordered a bottle of wine and a busboy brought over cocktails instead and we told him it wasn't ours he then proceeded to ask each table if it was there's. Main course came out and was brought to us and it was not ours. Again the busboy/girls proceeded to ask each table if it was what they ordered. I was embarrassed for them and especially for Alvin the owner because he is such a nice and respectful person. Our appetizers were very good, but my main course was cold. I sent it back. 30 minutes have passed and I still haven't received my main course. At this point my husband was done with his dinner and was disappointed that he asked for our check just so we can get out out there. We paid our bill and I still haven't received my main course it was 10:30pm. The waiter apologized and took it off our bill which is what I would have done if I was in his shoes. Probably won't be back for a while .. was a disappointment :(
This restaurant has a great menu. The food Is amazing and the Jazz band playing this night were great! The live music is one of the reason I come to Alvin and Friends. The restaurant also honors the reservation and comments through Open Table. That is very important to me.
Service was slow, but staff was friendly and the food was good. They also had live music that was wonderful. Enjoyed the meal and enjoyed the company
Excellent! Our party od seven was immediately seated by warm pleasant staff. Our food was outstanding. Everyone enjoyed their dishes. Plates were clean. Plan to visit again when next in the area.
The curry clam chowder was excellent! The ambiance and every meal we ordered was sooooo good.
Service was a bit spotty. Our dishes came out at different times and they forgot one item. We were also sitting right below a ceiling-mounted speaker and the volume was pretty high so it was a little difficult to hear each other. But the food was really good.
The food, ambience and music was great...And, as always, Alvin is a terrific host!
Very impressed with Alvin & Friends: friendly atmosphere, comfort food with a creative twist, very professional staff and the owner was very easy on the eyes. Will return again.
The food was amazing! Alvin, the owner walked around and checked on his customers. It was a homey feeling and the live music was a treat, the singer was fantastic! Would definitely recommend for brunch, but we will be going back for dinner soon!
It was really good.
Always great food, service and the atmosphere! I love how Alvin comes over to greet all of his customers personally...makes you feel like family. I would definitely recommend, and have recommended.
We had a delicious mid-week dinner. It was tough to choose from the many menu options. The fried chicken was light and tasty; the blackened snapper was just spicy enough and the sides were well-seasoned. The atmosphere was friendly and relaxed. Alvin came by to say, "Hi."
Already looking forward to a return visit.
My first time there, but i really enjoyed everytging about it. My waiter chloe just started working there & she was really helpful & fun to talk to! I like that i was asked where i would like to sit instead of being put wherever they felt. I even met Alvin hself, thats sweet for a owner to actually come out & greet you and even come back out to make sure you were enjoying yourself. Definitely going back, lovely place to enjoy with your spouse. I also sugguest getting the rosemary chicken or oxtail, im super picky with food but that was absolutely amazing
Alvin and Friends is Amazing. Alvin and his wife Gwen are gracious hosts who make you feel like family. Live music and gourmet food cannot be beat.
I’ve been to Alvin and friends before for dinner and had a wonderful time. Food and drinks were lovely. Ambience was great. So I decided to try out their brunch and was severely disappointed. I ordered the chicken and waffles. The waffle was cold. The chicken was chicken strips. It was bland. No flavor at all. Someone with me ordered the omlette with home fries. When it came the fries were sweet potato fries. Nowhere on the menu said that it was gonna be sweet potato fries. The drinks were ok. When I went for dinner the owner was walking around greeting customers. I guess he wasn’t there this time so everyone weren’t on their Ps & Qs. The bill took forever to come. When it came it was the wrong figure because gratuities hadn’t been added as yet. After that was sorted out we had to wait forever for someone to come and collect the payment. Overall it was not a good experience after having such high hopes for it
An absolute must!! Great food. Great atmosphere. Alvin personally greats all the guest. First visit was great. Return visit was the same level of expectation and more. Will be going back again.
If you are looking for good food , great customer service this is the place
The worst dining experience i have ever had!! We live across the street and will never refurn. Waited 25 min AFTER we were seated to be asked what we wanted for dinner and we had never even seen a menu. Proceeded to order drjnks, waited 25 more min, hot our dronks and placed our order. We waited another 45 min and nothing. Not even im sorry your food is taking long. We finished our drinks pahed the bar tab and left. Not to mention this occured on Valentines day, i was going to propose that night! Never ever again. Its a shame, the food looked and smwlled great, wish i had the opportunity to eat it.
Went there for the first time ever on Valentine's day. I heard from an old coworker that the place was good so decided to give it a try.
We should've known it was going to go downhill once the runner told us our waiter was busy and would be with us shortly... 20 mins to be exact. We arrived when there were barely any people at the restaurant placed our orders and it took 35-40 mins to get each course. Our waiter forgot our entree and brought us the appetizer twice which we kindly rejected because we had already had it. Everything BUT the appetizers was COLD. We could barely taste the flavor in the food and tasted bland. Honestly I could've cooked a much better meal at home, which I regretted. It was WAY over priced for the service and annoyance we experienced. The menu said gratuity would NOT be included in the bill and they added it... guessing because almost everyone in the restaurant was complaining about the service they feared customers wouldn't leave tip.
There was a couple sitting next to us that got their food very quickly and they arrived AN HOUR later than us and we had the same waiter, but they seemed to know the owners, which was not fair to everyone else in the restaurant that was patiently waiting.
Overall, we will not be dining here ever again.
Music so loud that I wasn’t able to have a conversation.
Not a pleas experience.
Also the service very slow and had to ease for everything.
Lovely place to enjoy great food! Our waiter was very accommodating, friendly although not overbearing. Took a while after being seated, for us to be served, although the food was worth the wait. When the waiter was informed that the pasta, shrimp and salmon dish, had no salmon in it, he quickly went to the kitchen and within good time presented a healthy piece of grilled salmon. Now that’s Great customer service!!
The vegan chicken was DELICIOUS!!!!
My wife and I really enjoyed this restaurant. It was worth every penny.
This is the 3rd time that I have celebrated my birthday at Alvin and Friends and each time is better than the last. Alvin came around to our table to introduce himself and ask about our reason for coming in that evening. We explained that we were there for my birthday dinner, and he made sure that everything was just perfect. Alvin even treated us to a birthday champagne toast. The food was awesome, the rum punch was flowing and the staff was great. Alvin and Friends is always a good choice, for a special occasion or a regular dinner out.
I Met a colleague for dinner and it was wonderful reconnecting. She ordered shrimps and grits, and I had fried catfish and grits. We both had Caesar salads with fried Okra. It was a nice twist on the salad. Everything was scrumptious. I haven't been to Alvin's for a while and we were both delighted with the meals and the service. This was on a Thursday and there was live jazz.
The only downside, was that I ordered 2 Crab curry soups to go. The waitress brought the soup in one large container and said it was 2 portions, but they had no small containers to separate them. When I got home, it was only one portion and I was charged for 2. That was quite disappointing as I promised the soup to my husband and son-in -law.
No Reason To Go Back I'm Afraid...
What a pretty restaurant with so much potential! That said - it was freezing! We asked a staff member about heat and she said, "Why? Are you cold?" Meanwhile, I was wearing gloves, a scarf, and had my hands over the candle in an effort to find warmth! My husband and I marveled at how many patrons wore scarves, ordered tea mid-meal, or kept on their coats! Even the owner, who chatted with some, wore a scarf and sweater! In addition to the chill, the service was fair at best. We didn't place our order until 25 minutes after arrival. Our waitress was nice, yet stretched thin. We heard the phrase, "thank you for your patience" with ever table she approached. Maybe they were short staffed tonight... The appetizers: my husband ordered the fried green tomatoes, I ordered the curry crab soup (in the hopes of warming up!). Both were VERY flavorful! BUT - the fried green tomato was literally 2 tomato slices on top of each other, and my soup was luke warm! Sadness! My husband's baby back ribs dinner was more boiled than smoked, but still decent, and my grilled chicken salad was bland and somewhat disappointing. The drinks were pathetically slow, and where they could have made money in alcohol, they fell very short with us. Again, in our opinion, no reason to go back...
I really wanted to give this place a rave review because the owner is extremely friendly and the space is great. However, the waiter we had was absent-minded and not attentive at all. We waited over an hour for our food, which we all believed he had forgotten about because another server came by with the wrong order for our table thinking it was for us, then had to take it back. We then had to wait another 15-20 minutes for our food to arrive, by which time we had been starving because the waiter did not bother to bring the muffins to the table either. He brought it after he had brought out food, which is essentially pointless because that is what we were supposed to be eating as we waited. He then forgot all our drinks as well, which was supposed to come out with the food and we in turn had to remind him of everything we had ordered, which was not only annoying but also aggravating because of the fact that we had been waiting so long just to eat. The food was good, and I would recommend the chicken and waffles and the french toast, but I would not recommend the restaurant at this time based solely on that waiter that we had.
WHat a disappointment. This restaurant has great potential with wonderful flavors and a nice ambiance but this was our second disasterous visit. We loved it in the past so we gave it another try this time after being reassured by the staff that last time was a fluke. It wasn’t. And it only got worse. It is understaffed, the kitchen sent out cold, stale food that had one raw kale leaf when kale was listed as part of the dish. Wine glass had lipstick on it and it’s was one bad thing after another. In fairness, the waitstaff and owner were nice and apologetic and didn’t charge for the problem items, but they were clearly understaffed and seem unable to properly service and cook for the larger space. They begged us to give them another chance but it was so bad and this was their second chance so sadly we’re done.
Excellen ambiance and food for my birthday celebration. Great live music on Jan 14. We enjoyed ourselves and Alvin stopped by our table to say "hi".
Surprise mother daughter dinner date. I made last minute reservations. I didn't know that a performance by the Delfonics would be happening. The staff was super attentive and accommodating. My mother and I were seated with a lovely coulple because we didn't have prior reservations for the show and the dining room was at full capacity. Our new friends were welcoming and we were able to celebrate our new friends birthday with a drink! Mom wants to return....so we'll see you soon Alvin and friends!
A well appointed friendly comfortable environment. Live music is a real plus and menu is diverse and interesting. Seafood
especially Branzino very good and well seasoned.
Alvin himself is a gem. Kind, accommodating
good sense of humor and an all around great
host. Cares about his clientele. The only thing that can use improvement is the service. Quite slow and forgetful. Wine list needs some strengthening in the Chardonnay area. But overall fun place and enjoyable evening!!
The meals were barely ok and the seafood my wife had was just a bowl of rice with one or two shrimps. Wine was served late, after we had to remind the waiter of our order and it was the wrong one. Good atmosphere though. Very expensive, bad value. The music was great !
Always a wonderful dining experience. This is our goto restaurant, on Friday nights. Live jazz music and great cuisine. Wine bottles are extremely reasonable. Well done!
I went to Alvin's for New Year's eve. I have been there several other times. The food is just so so, but everything else is great. The service and live jazz made the evening. The vegetarian food is pretty good, especially the quinoa entree and crispy kale side dish. The fried chicken also is very good. They have a good wine list that is not too pricey. Alvin is friendly and comes to say hello.
Perfect meal and ambiance for new year's eve night out with my hubby!
