As always, our Alvin’s experience was excellent. The collard greens are actually better, which is a tall order. I plan on coming back in a few short weeks.
Need a better Menu, the Venue and service was excellent
Went for Sunday Brunch and the food was very good. They had a jazz band and they too was very good. Will definitely go back and for brunch again and the wife and I are looking forward possibly trying their dinner menu.
Food always delicious. Very friendly waiters. Great jazz group. And as always Alvin so welcoming and gracious. A great place all around
the food was medicre---the vibe is great-but very overpriced and a limited menu=poor value!
I took my boyfriend to Alvin & Friends for his Birthday dinner. The place and art work was beautiful! The staff was super friendly and attentive. ALL of the food was Amazing! The Cornbread was so moist and Delicious! We had the Fried Green Tomatoes for an appetizer, I had the Bourbon Glazed Pork Chop with Rice and Peas and Sauteed Veggies and my boyfriend had the Fried Catfish with Grits and Black Eyed Peas, everything was sooo good! Towards the end of our meal, the owner Alvin came over to our table to ask us how our dinner was and to thank us for coming. That was so thoughtful and impressive you seldom get that type of service at restaurants these days. I HIGHLY recommend Alvin & Friends and we will be back!
Birthday. Made a note no cake no anything would come back maybe
Great food and atmosphere! Alvin' s restaurant is great place to go for dinner or drinks.
Such a classy place. Delicious Caribbean/Southern food and drink, excellent service, attractive decor, friendly clientele. An unannounced jazz trio played during the brunch--the musicians were talented and high level--and the volume was pleasantly perfect. I came alone and appreciated that Alvin of the big beautiful smile greeted me personally on the way in and again on the way out. Can't wait to go there again.
We went for Sunday brunch. They had great jazz playing. the food was good. Loved the vibe. Staff was amazing!
I would recommend Alvin and Friends - although my food was subpar at Brunch. I had the Chicken and Waffles which the chicken was soo bland. My friend had the Jerk Chicken omelet which was good. Our server was amazing. Quick and helpful. Out water glasses were always full. We didn't have to call him for anything he just knew. The service is amazing!!
Special and spectacular in every way.
Superb in all respects. Nice ambiance, excellent service, unique and tasty selections, amiable host/owner, attentive service, and pleasant background professional jazz. What a way to spend a Sunday brunch! Had heard excellent things about the place, but this was our first visit. NOT the last!
Perfection personified! Scrumptious food, friendly service, beautiful paintings on the walls and amazing music. Would love to see Sonny Hostin’s Spanish Lasagna on the menu. I rate this restaurant 10 stars out of 5👍 Thx, Nori and Steve
Alvin and Friends is the type of restaurant I really love to eat at. The host, Alvin, comes to each table to great guests when they come in and is so personable and lovely. We had the pleasure of having him sit with us when we finished the meal. He wanted to know what we thought of the food and service and chatted with us for awhile. The paintings surrounding us on the walls were all painted by him so there is plenty to talk about with him. On the way out, he bid us all farewell with nice comments and a kiss on the cheek and a warm hug. We really felt like we made a new friend, in addition to having an exquisite meal!
Totally recommend this place, but make sure to make RSVPs. Our dinner for four people included appetizer of calamari and main entrees of oxtail with coconut rice, baked salmon, and pasta dish. Paintings on the walls are all gorgeous, restaurant owner Alvin is friendly, interactive. Some key areas of improvement: Service staff at times seem to rush diners, taking empty plates and utensils swiftly, and asking far too often if we were finished with our meals. Service staff could be heard bickering in the rear of the restaurant, near the kitchen /restroom area. Additionally, the men's restroom was completely trashed, needed a cleaning.
I ordered the oxtail and it was some of the best oxtail I’ve had. My date ordered the lobster seafood pasta and she loved it, I don’t do seafood but this was good, I took home her leftovers. She described everything as amazing, fantastic, and exquisite. I would eat here everyday if I could.
Alvin greeted us and was generous with his time and his advice on the menu. Had a great time eating outside in a great summer afternoon.
Outstanding service and delicious food!!
The worst father’s day buffet ever! The servers didn’t look happy to be there. The food was cold and the bill was 130. I will never return to this place
My family really enjoyed our experience at Alvin and Friends. Alvin greeted us on our way in, checked on us during our meal and bid us farewell upon leaving. I felt as if we were dining in his home. We went for the Father’s Day buffet and the food was very good. I look forward to going back and trying the regular menu. The live music was fantastic and really brings you back to another time.
Great service and food. Very friendly staff. Definitely going back!
If you live in the neighborhood or have to drive it is definitely worth the experience, the ambiance, the food and the service superb. Alvin the owner is very personable and friendly. He is an amzing, humble , talented and genuine person. While you eat this delicious Caribbean, southern fusion, you are surrounded by the beautiful art that Alvin painted. Please try the wings and the rumpunch. The bestttt!!!!! I
Our dinners were delicious. We had calamari for appetizer and the Shrimp and Grits. Desert pistachio cheesecake which was soooo good.
The owner came over to talk to us and was very pleasant. We talked about his paintings which are displayed throughout the restaurant.
Overall we really enjoyed our meal and evening at Alvin and Friends and definitely will be back.
A great Southern restaurant. Staff is friendly and helpful. Great Jazz on Sundays. Food and service is excellent..
The ambiance was top notch. The service was excellent. The live band added a nice touch, although music by famous black musicians in jazz form would have been a better touch, considering the type of restaurant. Alvin greeting his guest was also nice. However, for me, the food lacked spice and southern/Caribbean seasoning that my tastebuds prefer. I prefer to savor in the flavor- I had the fried chicken entree and I wasn’t impressed. The portion size was adequate. The price was a little high to not thoroughly enjoy the meal. I would recommend this place because everyone’s taste is different. Overall, my party of 8 had a good time and they enjoyed their meal.
One of the best restaurants I have ever been too. Food was delicious and the staff was friendly and engaging. I’m from Massachusetts but whenever I’m in New Rochelle I plan to have dinner at Alvin’s. The artwork on the walls is beautiful.
The host is gracious, the food was good and I will be coming back again. We had an enjoyable time and the live music was such a plus. It definitely is a great restaurant and the waiters were very attentive. When I go back I will upgrade to 5 stars if I get the same level service the second time around.
We made a dinner reservation for 2, arrived and saw seats at the bar so we opted to sit there. We were promptly greeted by the lovely bartender, however, when we mentioned ordering food, we were told there was a backup in the kitchen and would have to wait about 15 minutes. Not an issue. We order drinks and perused the menu. We figured okay, 20 minutes is good, and was then told "yeah, no food right now!" HUH? It's a restaurant. Then we over hear another server behind the bar saying 45minutes. We were then offered water. HUH? I was beyond disappointed, we asked for the check, and bolted. Not sure when or if I'll be back, but that left an unsettling feeling in my stomach, or maybe I was just hungry! Really? The day before mother's day, which many choose to celebrate and treat their mothers. Get it together Alvin and Friends. First impressions are everlasting, at least that's what my mother told me! Thank goodness for choices!
Went there for Mother's day and enjoyed everything about this place. The décor, the food, the service and the music.
I used to LOVE A&F - it was our go-to restaurant for Mother's Day. Unfortunately I was left disappointed this year. The food was OK, not bad, but not as amazing as it once was (the cornbread for the table was dense and salty... definitely a different receipe). We were also overcharged for our meal and didn't realize it until after the fact as we were splitting the bill up. The prices on the receipt did not match the prices that were on the brunch menu. For the quality of the food, we were a bit upset but it was already after the fact. We had my 10 mo old daughter and had to ask repeatedly for a high chair. The server was lovely, but clearly just not on top of things. The owner Alvin came out (as he typically does) and greeted us all, wishing us moms a Happy Mother's Day. Overall we had a nice time but just some things that brought down my review score.
The food was amazing but the service was absolutely horrible. It was beyond slow and our waiter had a terrible personality. For the price we paid I expect better service by the food was very good somixed reviews.
Not good compared to what we're used to in the city.
Truly exceeded my expectations. Everything from the front desk (Nancy), the bartenders, the service staff, the music, ambiance, and the food was slamming (really good). Last but not least, Alvin does come to welcome each guest. If you're in the area, stop in and enjoy the experience.
The food was mostly good (I don’t recommend the duck) but the ambiance is great. Be aware this is a piano bar on the weekends so don’t expect quiet conversation. It’s loud and lively. The restaurant is lovely and the service is solid. Parking can be scarce after 8:00 so give yourself extra time.
The atmosphere was beautiful and staff were hospitable. We had the fried chicken with greens, the chicken was a bit under seasoned and the greens was salty. The duck was delicious! I wanted more.
The appetizers and cocktails were very good.
Disappointed they ran out of rum punch.
The jambalaya was good but not outstanding like other entrees I have eaten there before.
This was our first time at Alvin's. The ambiance was great! The staff was excellent and we had an opportunity to meet Mr. Alvin. As many have mentioned, he seems like a really nice man. However, our overall our meal was very disappointing, especially since I've heard such great things about this establishment. I brought my father here for his birthday dinner. We had reservations for 3:15, which at that time Sunday Brunch was still being served. I guess I missed that on the website, so its all my fault. Apparently it was about the end time for brunch and I guess we were the last reservation before they started prepping for Dinner at 5. What was most disappointing was that almost every meal seemed to be leftover warmed up food. It wasn't made fresh. Some of my family ordered omelettes. The omelettes were very greasy. The omelettes came with home fries. We were looking forward to that. The home fries came out dark brown, looked rewarmed or recooked. I ordered ackee and salt fish with fried bake (fried dumplings). This was the most saddening part. The fried bake was microwaved and not freshly made! How does one serve that? Any one from the islands can determine when bake is not made fresh. It was very disappointing. Mr. Alvin offered complimentary fries for the kids and we tasted a curry crab chowder (This was delicious). You could tell the fries were freshly made. Our waiter Delroy was also wonderful. The best part of our afternoon were the drinks. I chalked this experience up to maybe Alvin and Friends had an off day or we got "what was left from the kitchen". My father did not enjoy his meal at all. I ended up giving him half of mine, hoping he would enjoy that. I was embarrassed for bringing him there. Lastly, he got a slice of carrot cake and that was good. I'm an optimist so maybe we'll try Alvin and Friends again for dinner. I'm hoping that the next experience will be better.
Great ambiance. The owner came to our table. Live music was great.
This is a special place. The owner Alvin is terrific greeting all customers creating a family atmosphere. The wait staff is friendly and helpful. The walls are adorned with beautiful paintings-the owner is the artist and they are for sale. We plan to visit again.
