It was an interesting experience. I wouldn’t go back. Spent $150 per person and left hungry. The food is art, and the service is amazing.

Don't empty out your wallet at this restaurant. It exudes hipster vibe and is trying to be "tres Brooklyn" but the chef needs a lesson in careful use of ingredients and subtlety. His food gives umami a bad name. Essentially every dish needed to have a few discordant ingredients removed. There were many "cheffy" techniques at work but always at the same time. We read the menu with our cell phones because it was so dark-- we were not the only ones and then ate the 5 course tasting menu with suggested additions while listening to some godawful conversations around us. Tables too close. First 2 cold courses were tolerable and almost interesting. We then had the chef's special egg dish which promised egg, scallops, truffles, and caviar-- perhaps a good brunch but not as prepared and perhaps truffles and caviar should never be paired. A poached egg, covered with a custard vaguely tasting of scallop with a layer of duxelles which could be tasted, and a very strong taste of 2,4-dithiapentane although we were assured there was locally made olive oil and truffles involved they certainly were minor ingredients and overwhelmed by the commercial synthetic "truffle" oil flavoring.It was topped with a bit of caviar. It was served with a house-made soft brioche bread with onions on top and an "umami" butter with secret ingredients which were likely some variation of canned anchovies and parmesan. Natural sweet butter is so delicious and has its own "umami"-- this just destroyed the butter. The next course was overcooked tile fish with many more additional ingredients that fought with each other, followed by "peking duck" which was a 1/4 duck breast which seemed to have been prepared sous vide and then smoked because it was rare. The 5 spice powder which has never before been seen on a Peking duck, apparently allowed it to have that name. Dessert was attractive but tasteless and topped off with a gourmandise of chocolate-avocado (veggie chic and dreadful)
The waiting staff were extremely attentive and made me feel like a VIP from the moment I walked through the door, and I never felt ‘rushed’ through the tasting menu. The food was delicious, the only slight personal preference was that the duck was a bit chewy for me. The lighting was a bit dark but again, probably my advancing age.

One of the most memorable meals, I can still taste the soft egg and their umami butter. The food was AMAZING, the service was superb, the sommelier was very educated, and the ambiance was relaxed and unpretentious. I can't wait to celebrate another special occasion at Alter.

Alter reliably offers beautifully displayed dishes with complex flavors and texture. The tasting menu has changed, allowing for fantastic new looks and tastes, but the old special dishes, such as the memorable ‘soft egg’ are still available. Our wait staff was attentive, knowledgable, friendly, responsive, and flexible. All in all, a fantastic evening. Our guests from San Francisco lamented that they had to come to Miami to have this great a meal.
Honestly I get tasting menus. But this place was a big rip off. Food portions were ridiculously small for the price you pay. Make your portions a bit bigger and than you can call or dinner

Disappointing 7 course meal. Grouper and lamb ragout were very good chowder was good. Crude tasty but not unique or memorable. Disliked dessert and maitake (mushroom) dish. Service slow. Hard to u derstand food descriptions. Food artfully presented ted but dishes were more attractive visually than they tasted. A disappointment. Craft cocktail was a hit and miss. Kyu in Wynwood far superior in every regard. Can't recommend I'm afraid. Overrated. Can't compete with other chef dinners like Catbird Seat in Nashville or Campfire in Carlsbad CA

An absolute home-run! I have never had such a fun and delicious tasting menu experience. The service was impeccable and friendly, the food was approachable and amazing, and there was no pretense - i cant stress enough how relaxed and enjoyable the meal was! Will absolutely be returning.
We visited Alter based on a recommendation by a chef. He said if there was only one restaurant he could go to in Miami - Alter would be it. After reading so many positive reviews we booked Alter for our final dinner of our honeymoon trip.
The experience as a whole was the absolute best dining experience we could have imagined. They went above and beyond making us feel special for our honeymoon and the service throughout was impeccable.
Alter offers different tasting menus and we selected the 5 course menu which was incredibly presented and utterly delicious. Our waiter also recommended their signature egg and bread dish which was mind blowing - do yourself a favour and order this dish.
Now this is not an inexpensive restaurant and portions are small. However the flavours of each dish and the presentation and the entire experience are so memorable that it is more than worth the price.
Alter is now our #1 recommendation in Miami. Spoil yourself and give your tastebuds a treat and make a reservation ASAP at Alter
