Alta Mare is a small bistro located in Miami that specializes in Mediterranean cuisine. Both inside and outside dining maximize the available seats for patrons, and the open kitchen both saves space and enables diners to watch the chefs work their magic. The intimate space also makes it the ideal place to either begin or end a romantic evening.
The menu is mostly Mediterranean fare, with a few twists. Popular items on the generous menu include the grilled octopus, blackened cobia with roasted vegetables, arugala salad with beets and goat cheese and Harris Ranch braised short ribs. The dessert menu features a delicious classic vanilla bourbon creme brule that can't be missed.

Food was teriffic especially the wild mushroom ravioli and seared tuna. Service as well was excellent. Unfortunately, we were seated next to a table of what world travellers know as "ugly Americans" and ten of them!! Loud and obnoxious as if they owned the restaurant. Really made for an unpleasant experience. The restaurant was surely not going to comment to them but it might not be a bad idea as they don't realize the rest of the world does not want to be subjected to their poor manners.
Excellent choice. Every dish we tasted was absolutely fantastic, creative, tasty....really hard to describe the wonderful experience we enjoyed. We were 5 people, and everyone was so impressed and satisfied that we did not really cared about our pricy experience. You pay very happily when the experience is excellent and unique. Way to go.
Very chic, reminiscent of Barcelona. Mussels with Curry were outstanding; grilled octupus with farro tasty but lacked finesse. Local hogfish grilled on the dry side; Golden tile cooked perfectly. Cocktails not a strong point; Milk Chocolate and Peanut semi-freddo quite good. Service was obtrusive in the small rear room although the owner/hostess very accommodating. Our best dinner in South Beach topping Wish(awful) and Michaels(quite good).
We would go back again and make a meal of mussels, very good bread, and some nice wines.
My husband and I went to AltaMare prior to attending the Food and Wine Festival. Dinner was fabulous and our experience was wonderful -- from the moment we met the hostess to when the chef and owner came out and said hello and asked how our dinner was. Everyone was friendly, knowledgeable. We had a starter course, main course and dessert. Everything was superb. We would highly recommend the restaurant.
Superb food and service. if you like seafood - go. Menu has a mix of usual seafood preparations (grilled) and original-all very explained by the waitstaff and all executed beautifully. Nice wine list with all price ranges and, again, recommendations that are helpful and not driven by price.
We ate at the chefs table as we were a little late for our reservation and ended up having to wait another twenty minutes to be seated. This would not have been bad but we were unable to get a drink at the bar (on busy nights you need another bartender). When we were seated it took another 10 minutes for a waiter to get to us. However from there the night improved tremendously. The food was excellent and chef Simon Stojanovic was pleasant and attentive to our needs. We finished the dinner with the tiramisu. a little more attention to the service and this would be a five star.
Over the years, AltaMar(e) has been one of my favorite places on the Beach. You could always count on fresh fish delicately prepared and very attentive service. However, the last two times I have been there, the service has been abysmal....almost as if the wait just staff didn't care. Of course, the 18.5% gratuity is added regardless. I plan to eat my fish elsewhere for awhile until I have heard that they have their act together again.
We ordered 2 features off the menu...was later told they didn't have either of them. Then after my wife was not happy with the dish the waiter cross sold her...the waiter told her that that other people around us loved the dish and the the fish was fresh. And just stood there. Only to have the hostess come over and do the same. Very awkward. So much for the customer always being right!
The menu had a good selection of fresh local fish. The dishes were well prepared and presented. The staff was friendly and attentive. One big mistake was to be seated in the back room. It was very noisey and while I can't hold the restaurant accountable for obnoxious guests ( the table next to us thought everyone in the restaurant was interested in their conversation) if a large party is seated in there others should not be. Well at least we will decline next visit and wait for another table.
This is our second experience at Altamere. The first experience was excellent and the second was just as good. First of all the wine list is interesting and well priced. Clearly the wine buyerClaudio buys wine not labels....very unique especially in South Beach. We had glasses of vermentino and Chianti classico.
The food is authentic. This evening we had 2 homemade pastas. Both were incredible. Be sure to order the deconstructed Tiramisu for dessert.
We will return again. ...wonderful neighborhood gem. The restaurant is filled with locals.Look for Simon the server, super service and knowledge.
We were in Miami on vacation and lucked upon this gem of the restaurant. We were able to get one of the Chef's tables next to the kitchen. The chef made us right at home with pleasant conversation and helpful suggestions on the menu. In addition to the great reception by the chef and equally impressive service by the entire wait staff, the food itself exceeded expectations. The most unique dish was the grilled octupus that had a smoky taste accented by chorizo. The next time we are in Miami, we will be going there again.
Mediocrity! really lack understanding as to great reviews for this one. I had beer battered snapper which I could have had for a fraction of the price at any "Rusty Bucket"type restaurant. they were accompanied by fries basically. My husband had fish dish accompanied by very rubbery artichoke. Overpriced and disappointed!
This will be a repeat maybe even this weekend. We dined outside. The food and wine is interesting. The service was incredible.Highly recommend...forget the national restaurants with big names...use this little neighborhood gem while in South Beach Lincoln Road area.
The food was above average but I'd expect more from a restaurant that has a renowned chef and in positioned in such a high price range . Menus very limited and there were no specials. Service was very courteous but order came very late. If there is one thing that I hate in a restaurant is when you get the check and see that 15% tip already included in the balance and then there is another line right below saying "additional tip". It might be misleading if you don't pay attention you might end up paying the tip twice....
Food routinely good to excellent in this newly relocated (two doors away) AltaMare. Be alerted that it is a tad pricey for what you get, and the wine list does not live up to the standards of the food-the fish is among the best we have had, in all fairness.
