Chef Paul Ragan brings a feast of flavors to the dinner table.
Altaeats features a cozy yet comfortable dining room as well as a private tasting menu table in the "Chef's Office" which can be reserved for up to 6 "close" friends with 24 hour notice.
We assign our tables as we get the reservations with all of our guests in mind so we can not guarantee specific tables.
The staff is so kind, even opening up the door where they keep their purses, to show us where a special tasting menu event takes place. The food was great and the wine recommendation was perfect. To top it off, we met the chef next door serendipitously afterward - unassuming, consummately kind, and a master host.
Great service & great food.
Amazing food and service! This restaurant never disappoints. Our favorite neighborhood secret! First-time diners.....FYI - There are no markings on outside of restaurant and when blinds are pulled, it looks like a vacant building. Trust me, this is one of the very best restaurants in Pasadena. Go and enjoy!
Food and service is always excellent!!
This restaurant is our neighborhood gem. We come as often as possible, spend almost every special family occasion here as well as casual weekend brunches. The menu is ever changing and the creativity and freshness of the food is top notch. I would recommend AltaEats to anyone.
Great staff and food.
This little gem of a restaurant was quite cozy. The food was very good although the portions were extremely tiny for the price. Therefore I will not be returning here. I can pay the same amount for a high end restaurant and get more!
This little known, out of the way place in the very northern part of Pasadena is a gem. Great food, good wines, very solicitous service. A noise level that allows for conversation. Casual. It's the complete package.
Valentine's Day dinner, reservations made weeks in advance. When we arrived, hostess seated others (that arrived after we did) before us. We were then told that the only table available was right next to the front door (literally inches from the door), or sitting at what they termed the "counter," which was a narrow shelf-like spot in the back adjacent to the kitchen. We were given no other option. Hostess was unsympathetic. Since we had no interest in constant blasts from the cold, outside air, or having people waiting for a table standing over us as we ate, we reluctantly opted for the "counter." That was a mistake. Cramped, loud (from the kitchen), uncomfortable. The entire evening was pretty much ruined for us. It might have been different if we were walk-ins, but I don't expect to be relegated to the worst seat in the house if I have a reservation. Seriously, if I'm paying $250+ for dinner, I'd like to sit be comfortable while I eat it. I really wanted to like this place, but we are totally turned off by the experience. Can't see any reason to go back, even though the food was fine.
Great as always! We seem to meet some interesting other diners every time we eat here and the servers are fun too!
Pleasant dining room with neutral decor allowing for a nice focus on the food and companions. Excellent service- I was offered a taste of two wines when I did not select an option straight off. Very flavorful kale quinoa salad (heavy on the quinoa) despite the fact that the kale was more like a condiment on top of the quinoa. The skirt steak and shredded lamb were both nicely seasoned and balanced with the right touch of an accompaniment. Nice wine selection but on the pricier side (glasses start at $12). You also have a choice of flat or sparkling in-house water which is always appreciated. I would definitely return.
Had a very nice experience at Altaeats. While there is no signage from the street and the actual decor is minimalistic the food and service were very good. Overall a very nice night out.
I am a regular though not frequent guest at Altaeats. I love the small and interesting menu, the excellent wine list and the atmosphere of a special small place run by a particular chef. I always have good food here.
Hidden gem - best date night. Exquisite food. Great service. Always returning
It is always a pleasure to have dinner at Altaeats and as always everyone loves the food, drink, staff, and restaurant as a whole.
Already a long-time dinner customer, now a brunch believer. Stellar from start to finish.
Nice food home made style , and everything was delicious , for sure It will be my favorite Restaurant
Impressive, though modest menu: delicious courses, with quality ingredients artfully presented, and a relaxed atmosphere, like a neighborhood bistro. We’ll go again!
incredible food, with a casual upscale vibe. they never disappoint!
Delicious food and pleasant atmosphere. We ate early with only 3 other coples in the restaurant, so the noise level was perfect.
We did the Chef’s Office. It’s a 5 course tasting menu with pairings for $100 per person. It’s a ridiculous deal.
What a wonderful restaurant! Excellent food! Excellent service!
Altaeats is a blast, and all of the servers (Hannah, Allie, etc.) are fantastic!
Make sure to also attend the Thursday tastings at Altadena beverage nextdoor. And, if you pick up a bottle of wine at Altadena beverage, you can get free corkage at Altaeats.
The food and service were outstanding. Some elsewhere have commented on the small size of the room and close arrangement of tables. While I can see that diners sitting in the center section of the room might feel cramped and experience a lack of privacy, we were against the wall and perfectly comfortable. The only negative was trying to get a reservation on a Wed., when they’re closed, for the following night. I left two voice messages but never received a call back. Open Table showed no tables for 3 for the time we wanted, so I took one for an earlier time. On a third try to reach them an our before our Open Table time, someone answered and told us we could come later, at our preferred time. When we arrived, there were at least four tables to choose from. So my gripe is with Open Table for not providing an accurate picture of table availability and with the restaurant for not returning phone messages.
Great food service and so happy to have this place in my neighborhood!
Hannah is awesome!
2 of our dinners were delicious, the shared special was uninspired. The portions were very small and sides delivered well before entries... so a mashed potato course all on it's own was odd. Desserts were lovely. (Though the eggnog was dreadful) Would have been nice to have been offered wine while we waited for our party! $$!
An excellent find, that is hard to notice. It is a very small, quaint restaurant, with excellent food. There is a basic menu, which doesn't separate appetizers/small plates from the main meals, although it changes about 2/3 of the way down the left side. Then many of the main meals are prepared as explained on the board as specials. Tables are arranged as several long tables that can be broken up into smaller seating groups. The main Chef/Owner and the staff are very informal but friendly. It is actually hard to find as there is no name on the outside, and lighting is low, so you are not sure if you are in the right place until you get inside. This appears to be a neighborhood restaurant mostly known by the locals, and its small size is probably meant to keep it that way, but it provides a unique experience, with fresh food prepared in just the right amount of seasonings and sides.
It is always a good sign when you want to order everything on the menu. Classic neighborhood restaurant that is discreet from the street but known to foodies. Worth the drive to those a bit farther away. Make sure you check out the liquor store 2 doors down owned and operated by restaurant.
Our party of 5 (which turned into a party of 6) had a wonderful time at AltaEats for brunch. Wines are reasonably priced and at one point we opted for the "Mystery Wine" which was a lot of fun. Our server was fun and gracious and put up with our continued merriment. We enjoyed several dishes off the brunch menu and shared some of the toasts to start. The proprietor also runs the liquor store two doors down and we had fun taking turns to check out his unusual offerings (and yes, we walked away with several bottles to take home). Parking can be a challenge so be patient and bone up on your parallel parking skills!
Alta Eats continues to shine as a wonderful restaurant serving fresh and delicious plates in Alta Dena. We both had fish (a scallop special and the grilled salmon) that were both delicious along with the wonderful olive appetizer. The server immediately recognized my friend, who had not been in the better part of a year, and was quite gracious. For the Pasadena/Alta Dena area, this is a place to keep on your short list.
Great Chef owned operated place where the servers obviously are well versed in ingredients and preparation of the spectacular food .
Nothing so crazy over the top to be dominant over anything else , but a clever orchestra of textures and flavors , enough to convince you this food is not of this earth , or perhaps was prepared by Angels ..
The atmosphere is calm and quiet. The staff is friendly, upbeat and knowledgeable. The food is terrific. It is a little pricy, but absolutely worth it. I only wish I could afford to eat there every night.
The food is well prepared and the wait staff is very friendly. Place is a little hard to find despite being on major street, but that might be intentional.
Outstanding as always. Excellent food, comfortable atmosphere, and great service. Highly recommend for adults.
great place to grab a bite and corkage is $15 which works for me. The service could be more attentive
Sadly, I can't give Altaeats a particularly favorable review on this occasion because the food was really not good. We have dined here several times and the food has usually been pretty good, sometimes excellent, so I'm hoping that this was just an unusual blip. I had the polenta with chicken 'porchetta'. The chicken was rubbery and resembled processed chicken in taste and texture. The polenta had several large clumps in it and was far from smooth and creamy. Scallops and risotto dish was better. The cauliflower dish is usually delicious but it, as well as everything else we ordered, was over-salted. We had a couple of decent glasses of wine and there was a nice atmosphere about the place. Service was friendly and helpful, as ever.
Lovely evening. We hadnt been for a while and really enjoyed it. It's our nbrhd fine dining experience.
Another great meal. The foie gras left my wife speechless.
I love the relaxed feel of this place. It's a nice local place that's unique and special. I love there is a liquor store next door!
