Altabira City Tavern
Situated on the top floor of the Hotel Eastlund, Altabira City Tavern is an American beer-centric restaurant and bar by Portland chef/restaurateur, David Machado. The restaurant is perched high above Portland’s fast-growing Lloyd District on the city’s East Side. With sweeping views of downtown, Altabira City Tavern offers smart pairings of food and drink in a modern yet casual setting. Altabira features 16 tap handles of local craft beers, plus select European and Northwest wines and locally distilled spirits. Altabira’s dining room seats 50, the spacious rectangular bar seats 34. A gorgeous patio — with windbreaks, heaters and fire pits — accommodates 100. Five stunning private dining and meeting rooms — including the 3,400 square foot Cosmopolitan Grand Ballroom— feature floor to ceiling windows and breathtaking views.
Consistently a great spot to dine. I always know I can bring guests to Altabira and we will have an excellent experience.
Came here with 12 friends for my birthday. The service was good - they were ready right when we came in and sat us at a table with a nice view. It did somewhat feel like we were crammed into a corner of the restaurant, though. The food was sub-par. Not nearly as good as I’d expected...the flavors just weren’t there. Bland & unrefined. For this reason I won’t be coming back, there are many places with much better food in Portland. Expected more for the price. Drinks were delish.
Starters and entrees were impressive. We had a group of 5 with a cross section of both. Service was excellent and we are planning to come back.
Every single dish from appetizer thru dessert was delicious... over the top delicious!
Less than impressed. We had reservations as we were celebrating a birthday with friends from out of town. I had made a point to call in advance day of to arrange to have a bottle of champagne waiting at the table when we arrived. Since the restaurant didn’t open until 4pm, I left a message as the greeting instructed to do. When we arrived, our table was not ready which also meant, no champagne at the table. I had discreetly excused myself to notify the host to please have a bottle delivered. He told me price, which I hadn’t asked, I confirmed and 10 mins later our waiter arrives empty handed and asked the table if we had asked for brut. I gave him a look to carry-on and bring to table. So much for that surprise. The whole experience was unprofessional and awkward. The night did not improve. Grossly understaffed and extremely long wait time. We easily could have spent more on cocktails, but our server was spread so thin.
I booked in advance and requested a window table for quiet and more privacy yet was told on arrival that no window tables were available. What’s the point if advance booking and return visits if you can’t be accommodated?
Everything was great for our mother/daughter dinner before a concert. We had a wonderful experience and server!
We went to Altibira for a birthday. The wait staff was slow, unfriendly and they don’t even do anything for Birthdays! Would not recommend this place if you are wanting good service or to celebrate any special occasion. Will not be returning.
Unfortunately the lobster risotto was without a hint of lobster and the short ribs, while delicious were served Luke warm. The view is great!
I would recommend the rooftop bar. The night we ate in the dining room. it was busy. Our waitress was not very attentive. Service was slow.
Excellent experience! Altabira provided delicious food & excellent service at our celebratory group lunch (12 at our table). I will be back!
Good news: The good views of Downtown Portland, the Convention Center, and the West Hills are mostly NOT diminished by the tall, newly-constructed convention center hotel.
The food and libations menus are as inviting as ever.
This was such a great lunch break after a nice hike in the morning. My friends loves the food and sitting outside was so nice and the music was great.
As always, a wonderful evening. We were a group of 11. The service was prompt and attentive, the wine suggestions were spot-on and the food, was as always, delicious. From the risotto, to the steaks and shepherd's Pie, we all enjoyed our food.
Tried to sit outside but the lighting was awful. Felt like you were sitting in a hockey rink.
After visiting Altabira a few times on the rooftop, my birthday experience on a Saturday night was more than shocking. They didn't have enough servers on staff and we received less than adequate service and long waiting on everything from drinks to giving our food order. Must have been an off night.
Great atmosphere -
The best place to eat before an event at the Moda Center!
Fortunately some good things never change… Good vibes and atmosphere with stellar view of the city at night… Fantastic preparation of chicken dinner I always get … My favorite server Heather waited on us and she is very poised and professional with a great personality.
Menu descriptions are distant from the reality of the over priced food. Odd and overpowering sauces used to hide mediocre quality meats. Super noisey with slow, disengaged service.
I had the salad niçoise. It was delicious, but it was very small! I think for the price a little more tuna, potatoes & green beans should have been included with the entree. Next time I would get that, but include a starter with my meal! The other three members of our party had a salad and two sandwiches. I was the only one who finished my meal! I’ll definitely return!
Busy Saturday night, had requested a table by the window and the fact it was an 18th birthday celebration but was not noted, did get a city view but not by the window. A lot of the menu items were sold out, which was strange as we had a 6pm reservation. Not a lot of choice for vegetarians. Server was super, no complaints there although one of our party's food was given to a different table so they had to wait for their entree.
Had a better experience for lunch mid-week.
We had a weekend business trip to Portland and we ate at Altabira the first night. We enjoyed it so much that we came back the next two nights! Great food at reasonable prices like you would find at a local restaurant. No ridiculous hotel markup here. The noise level is high, but there is quiet (unreservable) seating outdoors. We were staying at the Hotel Eastland, which was also perfect for our needs. It's an easy walk to the Convention Center and Moda Center.
A great place to have a lunch with views of the city
Although food and service were both terrific, be sure to check your bill carefully. We noticed once we arrived home that we had been charged for three desserts (we shared just one). I emailed management, along with a photo of the receipt, yet got no response. An extra $18 in their pocket.....
When i arrived for my reservation we asked to sit outside. I had no idea who my waiter was and finally went into the restaurant and took menus off a random table. My date and I had noticed a table next to the window with a good view, except it needed to be cleaned. I walked into the restaurant and asked a random waiter to clean the table for us so that we can switch. He said that’s okay. I went back to sit down with my date and then noticed a couple walked in, they went towards the dirty table and asked a waiter walking by to clear the table for them and she said oh yes right away and they sat down. Pretty frustrating seeing as I made a reservation, I had asked a waiter well before they arrived, and there was no apology for the mix up. I probably could have cleaned the table myself but I felt weird about it. The service was terrible I probably won’t make a reservation ever again. Unless you want to basically do their job for them, this isn’t the right place for you and a date.
Altabira was recommended by a trusted friend and was completely worthy of her praises. Great wait staff, delicious food, convenient location and a wonderful ambiance.
Amazing view, great food & cocktails & close to the Moda Center.
Food was awesome and customer service was excellent. I"ll come again.
We made this reservation a couple months ago knowing we needed something close to Moda. We were on time (early) and someone was yelling at everyone arriving that there was an hour wait time up at altabira. We just went up anyway because we had a reservation. Sat down and ordered wine and an appetizer before looking over the rest of the menu. We decided to leave when our order hadn’t arrived for more than 30 minutes. It was crowded loud and slow. It wasn’t our servers fault. Everyone needs to work out kinks or not seat so many people if the staff can’t handle it.
Friends get together. Wonderful city view from ythe roof top patio. Food is always consistant.
GREAT atmosphere, GREAT service, and GREAT food!! Love this place! Don't miss out!
Nice view although the building is not all that tall. Nice to be outside but the inside has big windows and is spacious as well. The drinks are great, ha! They don't skimp on them. And the food was delicious. It's not cheap but the quality matches the pricing so I didn't feel like I was taken advantage of. Great place!
Delightful evening sitting outside in the early evening with a delicious dinner, thank you~
Went on a Friday night.
Problem was not enough servers or runners on.
The menu sounded great. But the Food was nowhere near a 5 star - 2 meals came out cold. Server was happy to replace but everyone else was finished by the time the replacements came.
Desserts looked better than they tasted. Even the sodas were almost flat. First time there - with all of the fantastic places in Portland to eat probably won’t be back.
Disappointing but we Enjoyed the view though.
We’ve been here a few times. This time the food was cold and didn’t taste the same as before. We got the prime ribs. Also the staff is not very friendly. Staff was rude about my toddler walking around next to our table.
Fine restaurant except too noisy for business discussions
Good food, but you're also paying for the exceptional view -- so pricey compared to less glam locations. Service can be very slow, especially for larger groups. We were seated 15 minutes after our reservation time and waited another 45 minutes from the time we ordered until food arrived, which is a deal-breaker for working stiffs who need to get back to the office. Two in our group had to ask for their lunch to immediately be put in a take-out box so they could get back to the office for meetings. To be fair, this was the worst experience we've had, but don't plan on getting in and out in an hour!
Never intend to bring a group back, as service was so slow.
Great food, great view! The seared ahi and cucumber was likely one of the best meals I will have in 2019.
