Altabira City Tavern
Situated on the top floor of the Hotel Eastlund, Altabira City Tavern is an American beer-centric restaurant and bar by Portland chef/restaurateur, David Machado. The restaurant is perched high above Portland’s fast-growing Lloyd District on the city’s East Side. With sweeping views of downtown, Altabira City Tavern offers smart pairings of food and drink in a modern yet casual setting. Altabira features 16 tap handles of local craft beers, plus select European and Northwest wines and locally distilled spirits. Altabira’s dining room seats 50, the spacious rectangular bar seats 34. A gorgeous patio — with windbreaks, heaters and fire pits — accommodates 100. Five stunning private dining and meeting rooms — including the 3,400 square foot Cosmopolitan Grand Ballroom— feature floor to ceiling windows and breathtaking views.
I had the salad niçoise. It was delicious, but it was very small! I think for the price a little more tuna, potatoes & green beans should have been included with the entree. Next time I would get that, but include a starter with my meal! The other three members of our party had a salad and two sandwiches. I was the only one who finished my meal! I’ll definitely return!
Busy Saturday night, had requested a table by the window and the fact it was an 18th birthday celebration but was not noted, did get a city view but not by the window. A lot of the menu items were sold out, which was strange as we had a 6pm reservation. Not a lot of choice for vegetarians. Server was super, no complaints there although one of our party's food was given to a different table so they had to wait for their entree.
Had a better experience for lunch mid-week.
We had a weekend business trip to Portland and we ate at Altabira the first night. We enjoyed it so much that we came back the next two nights! Great food at reasonable prices like you would find at a local restaurant. No ridiculous hotel markup here. The noise level is high, but there is quiet (unreservable) seating outdoors. We were staying at the Hotel Eastland, which was also perfect for our needs. It's an easy walk to the Convention Center and Moda Center.
A great place to have a lunch with views of the city
Although food and service were both terrific, be sure to check your bill carefully. We noticed once we arrived home that we had been charged for three desserts (we shared just one). I emailed management, along with a photo of the receipt, yet got no response. An extra $18 in their pocket.....
When i arrived for my reservation we asked to sit outside. I had no idea who my waiter was and finally went into the restaurant and took menus off a random table. My date and I had noticed a table next to the window with a good view, except it needed to be cleaned. I walked into the restaurant and asked a random waiter to clean the table for us so that we can switch. He said that’s okay. I went back to sit down with my date and then noticed a couple walked in, they went towards the dirty table and asked a waiter walking by to clear the table for them and she said oh yes right away and they sat down. Pretty frustrating seeing as I made a reservation, I had asked a waiter well before they arrived, and there was no apology for the mix up. I probably could have cleaned the table myself but I felt weird about it. The service was terrible I probably won’t make a reservation ever again. Unless you want to basically do their job for them, this isn’t the right place for you and a date.
Altabira was recommended by a trusted friend and was completely worthy of her praises. Great wait staff, delicious food, convenient location and a wonderful ambiance.
Amazing view, great food & cocktails & close to the Moda Center.
Food was awesome and customer service was excellent. I"ll come again.
We made this reservation a couple months ago knowing we needed something close to Moda. We were on time (early) and someone was yelling at everyone arriving that there was an hour wait time up at altabira. We just went up anyway because we had a reservation. Sat down and ordered wine and an appetizer before looking over the rest of the menu. We decided to leave when our order hadn’t arrived for more than 30 minutes. It was crowded loud and slow. It wasn’t our servers fault. Everyone needs to work out kinks or not seat so many people if the staff can’t handle it.
Friends get together. Wonderful city view from ythe roof top patio. Food is always consistant.
GREAT atmosphere, GREAT service, and GREAT food!! Love this place! Don't miss out!
Nice view although the building is not all that tall. Nice to be outside but the inside has big windows and is spacious as well. The drinks are great, ha! They don't skimp on them. And the food was delicious. It's not cheap but the quality matches the pricing so I didn't feel like I was taken advantage of. Great place!
Delightful evening sitting outside in the early evening with a delicious dinner, thank you~
Went on a Friday night.
Problem was not enough servers or runners on.
The menu sounded great. But the Food was nowhere near a 5 star - 2 meals came out cold. Server was happy to replace but everyone else was finished by the time the replacements came.
Desserts looked better than they tasted. Even the sodas were almost flat. First time there - with all of the fantastic places in Portland to eat probably won’t be back.
Disappointing but we Enjoyed the view though.
We’ve been here a few times. This time the food was cold and didn’t taste the same as before. We got the prime ribs. Also the staff is not very friendly. Staff was rude about my toddler walking around next to our table.
Fine restaurant except too noisy for business discussions
Good food, but you're also paying for the exceptional view -- so pricey compared to less glam locations. Service can be very slow, especially for larger groups. We were seated 15 minutes after our reservation time and waited another 45 minutes from the time we ordered until food arrived, which is a deal-breaker for working stiffs who need to get back to the office. Two in our group had to ask for their lunch to immediately be put in a take-out box so they could get back to the office for meetings. To be fair, this was the worst experience we've had, but don't plan on getting in and out in an hour!
Never intend to bring a group back, as service was so slow.
Great food, great view! The seared ahi and cucumber was likely one of the best meals I will have in 2019.
Food was terrible. Wouldn’t recommend for the prices. Our steak was like leather and our dessert was cold. Not impressed
Service was very slow. Food was just okay. The glass of wine I was served tasted terrible...something clearly wrong with it.
This is our go-to near the Convention Center. Great view and excellent food! Service can be slow, but there's nowhere else even close to comparable in the neighborhood, especially the beautiful rooftop patio when it's nice out. An excellent choice for lunch, happy hour, or dinner.
The atmosphere was wonderful. The patio area has a relaxed, casual elegance. The view is nice and completely different depending on which side you sit on but both views are fabulous. The dessert was delicious and the drinks were good.
The only thing that would have made it better was our waitress. She wasn’t rude or anything but she wasn’t very pleasant, hardly smiled, acted completely indifferent to us. It would have been nice if she was a bit friendlier. She looked worn out so maybe it was the end of her shift. I would definitely go here again- in fact, I’m planning another girls night here already!
We had a large group of visitors from out of state for a race the following day. The menu selection was great. The staff was very helpful when adding two more people to our large group and they even made it easy to separate the bills. I will definitely recommend to friends and family.
View was nice, but OMG it was LOUD in there, including way more young children and babies than I would have thought (although it IS a hotel restaurant).
The restaurant and food was amazing. Two small things made it less than outstanding. The hostess had an attitude of we were bothering her. And then our waitress was spread too thin and her tables were out on the terrace. There were several times it took a long time before we were able to flag her down. Once she was at our table, she was amazing!
I would recommend with caution. The menu was limited and was o.k. tasting. Our server was awesome. It was pretty loud inside, hard to have a conversation.
Gorgeous space! Food and service were okay but nothing great. The restaurant wasn't full when we went for lunch, but it was hard to hear each other.
We went on a lovely warm night, and sat inside next to windows so we could be out of the sun. Cool vibe. Ordered 2 drinks, 1 starter, 1 salad, 1 main, 1 side and a dessert to share. Service was slllooooowwww even though it was early. When it finally arrived, the cocktail from the specials list was perfect. An old fashioned with some in-house components. We also ordered a lemondrop, which was more like a lemonade. Requested a redu, which was a tad better. After an extended wait (over 30 min), the starter showed up. Prociutto wrapped prawns: overcooked, although the dip was yummy. Another long wait then the salad arrived. Strawberry salad with greens and ricotta: Odd texture, not enjoyable. Hmm, the evening is not trending well. After another wait, next was the main course and side: 1/2 chicken with gnocchi and some spring vegys, the side was beet greens. Both were AMAZING. Dessert was a rhubarb cobbler, cooked to order (server did not tell us this, so we were very grumpy about yet another extended delay). Also AMAZING, although portion size of the vegys was consistently small. We found out later that the so-so lemon drop had been comp-ed (Yeh!). So service was consistently slow, server did not tell us much about the reasons for the delays. Food was extremely inconsistent. Likely will not recommend.
Great food, great staff, great view, great experience. Perfect place to host a lunch meeting.
Good selection of foods well prepared. Great views from almost any place in the restaurant. Great outdoor deck but it was too hot that day for lunch.
Love this place! Excellent food. Amazing beer selection and great cocktails. And the view of the beautiful Portland skyline is spectacular. Lively enough to feel festive and fun, but quiet enough for good conversation. A pair of 20-somethings and a pair of sixty-somethings, we had a great evening!
I made a reservation for a group of 12 people two weeks in advance, and when we arrived exactly on time, we were asked to all sit at different tables. I expressed my irritation at the unpreparedness of the staff, and the host pulled tables together and started setting places as we were standing there. This was embarrassing for me as the group leader, took time away from our lunch, and they made it seem like it was an inconvenience. No one makes a group reservation so they can all eat separately! I was shocked that this was even an option! I have gone to Altabira for years for work lunches and team events, and even though the food is great, I don't trust that they will honor the reservations.
Great views. Nicely curated tap list. Tasty food. Service felt somewhat scattered but overall fine. We'll be back.
Very nice restaurant with great service.
The outdoor seating truly puts the rest of the excellent experience over the top. Our second time there. Loved it perhaps even more the second time around!
Very friendly and accommodating to our group. Food was excellent and fabulous views.
The table I was led to was dirty, and my fork had to be replaced because it was not clean.
The wine glasses had a soap film on it.
Best chicken dinner in town !
I love to come a bit later when the sun starts to go down and sit with a view…
