We are a small plate restaurant, and in our food you can discover the influence of all the countries surrounding the Mediterranean Sea, which we consider to be a wonderful flavor palate. The small plates allow you to experience more of these flavors.
Larry Baldwin is our chef at Alta. Gifted with a discerning and creative approach to tastes and textures, he carefully selects all the ingredients to compose a menu full of delicious surprises.
Please note that Alta accepts only cash and American Express.

Very efficient service. Excellent food and a great atmosphere. Our steady go-to whenever we visit NYC.
The food here is amazing!!! A bit pricey but worth the cost! Definitely coming back again.
Incredible. Will be back.
As always, Alta never disappoints. They have the yummiest (and strongest) red sangria ever. Every dish made to perfection. My favorites are the scallops and the foie gras. I can’t stop thinking about the beet infused pasta that came with the short ribs. Yum.
A nice place to unwind and hang with friends. One day with enough friends we want to try the Whole Enchilada. Highly recommend!!
Wonderful Tapas. Good price. Love to sit at the bar and have a glass of wine with dinner.
We were first seated on the main floor. It was very loud and difficult to carry on a conversation. Staff were very accommodating and moved us to a quieter location. We were pleased as we were assigned a new server who was much more friendly than the first. Our second server was phenomenal. We took many of his recommendations and loved them all! Short ribs, Brussel sprouts, carrots, lamb meat balls and agnolotti were some of our favourites.
After suggesting that my son take me to Alta for Mother's Day, he requested a return visit for his birthday. Considering that he's a discriminating diner, that was a tribute to the restaurant. The menus were personalized with Happy Birthday. The food was extraordinary once again, as was the service. We ordered six small plates so that we could experience variety, and each was a unique treat. We were able to order two dishes at a time so we could assess our appetites and next choices. Our only frustration was that we couldn't eat more because there are so many tempting and creative options.
Beautiful space and while our food was good, if a wasn’t outstanding to justify the price point. My cocktail was also very poorly made, but red sangria was great. Glad I checked it out but probably won’t be back for dinner.
good food; servers have a snobby attitude. They put us upstairs even tho we reserved a month ago.
Here's the trouble with Alta. It's a beautiful space, you don't feel like you're in NY....but,
the prices for what is brought to your table....in a word? RIDICULOUS. I'll repeat that:
RIDICULOUS. For $26 they can absolutely, ABSOLUTELY, afford to give you TWICE.....TWICE
the skirt steak (which is already a very, very cheap cut of steak, n'est-ce pas?) and twice
the number of grilled shrimp, lamb meatballs, et al.
But in the name of profit maximization and proof of a miserly, penny-wise, pound foolish restaurant, don't bet on getting anywhere near what you're being charged.
It's shameful and it's unnecessary.....but, that's what they do. And they get away with it
There was a mouse running around. We got a picture of him and showed our waiter...he kept running around the tables. We kept being served as if nothing was happening.
Positively delicious and memorable food, but we were so bummed by the incredibly loud party next to us when we had specifically requested, and were told we would have, a quiet table. An absolutely wonderful meal was literally ruined because we could not hear one another speak. Terribly disappointing.
Food was great but it is really loud!
Very romantic restaurant, set in a quaint atmosphere. The food is served tapas style, with lots of delicious options to choose from. The staff is very attentive. Get the Philadelphia Surprise!
A special place. With delicious food and drink. Just a lovely meal
Highly recommend the carrots, Philadelphia Surprise, wild shrimp and Candy Bar dessert. Overall though, everything is super delicious and the service was solid. The building is a bit of a rabbit warren but the downstairs is gorgeous.
Anniversary. Amazing! Food delicious. Ambiance perfect. Service on point.
I had my birthday here last week and it exceeded my expectations! Service was friendly and professional. The food was amazing and the ambiance was cozy. I'll definitely be back.
Wonderful meal. Glad we were upstairs to avoid loud main level
Amazing food and space
Too much noise
Coffee very bad
dinner very good
A little tricky to find with no sign from the street, but once we found it it was amazing. Highly recommend this for foodies, date nights, and special occasions. Huge variety of dishes for a tapas place. The ambiance is reminiscent of inside an old Spanish ship or something along those lines. The food we had was all very good, especially the goat cheese balls and Brussels sprouts. All in all it was worth the trip and we would visit again.
not that kind staff
salty and not that special dishes
I don't recommend this restaurant
One word: AWESOME!
It was a nearly perfect experience. Great location, fantastic food, good service. Tapas and small plates allow everyone to order different items and share it. It is the ideal business dinner versus a typical cardiac-inducing steakhouse.
Out of this world service and cuisine! I highly recommend the octopus, the burrata, and chicken wings! However, everything we ordered was delicious. Each bite was mind blowing-I was taken back by the quality of food and service. They wrote happy birthday with my boyfriends name on the menu and brought our dessert with a candle! Extremely impressed and would definitely come back. Perfect for celebrations, special occasions, and for a romantic dinner.
The initial table our server showed us to was tiny and wedged into an uncomfortable spot. It would have been impossible for us to sit there and be able to move our arms...not exaggerating. So we ate at the bar, everything we ordered was delicious. Skirt steak, mushrooms, Crudo (although was a tad warm) and ricotta gnocchi. Excellent Wine list and our server at the bar was awesome. Annoying that they'd try to seat us at a crappy table - they shouldn't even have a table like that (small room with a 10 top and several 2 tops lining the small room) but we made a good decision to sit at bar and the food and wine was incredible
The service was impeccable! And the food and wine were excellent! I can’t wait to return!
This was the second time we have been here and I’m sure we will return. Everything was delicious and service very good but it’s the kind of place that food comes out as it’s ready, as well as drink orders, so expect to dine casually. This is not the place to go if you are in a rush or extremely hungry. There is plenty of food if you order enough dishes but some dishes are hard to share so best to either go with people you are very comfortable with or have each person order their own dishes. The only drawback is the bill! VERY EXPENSIVE! Expect to pay $100+ per person with alcohol.
Very expensive for small dishes. Some excellent, some mediocre
I loved Alta and so did my date. Definitely recommend.
amazing food and great service. i would highly recommend this restaurant
Everything about Alta made for a special evening. We were warmly greeted and given a table in a cozy, quiet room, just right for our group (3 people who wanted to have a relaxed conversation). We ordered 7 dishes and truly couldn't think of one we'd have been willing to skip. The bar looked like a great spot for dinner and drink, and I'm keeping that in mind for next time.
Alta is SO wonderful from the ambience to the wine, to the food, to the service. It has been awhile since I was there and am so happy to return to this place because it is a hidden jewel in the West Village. I can't wait to return and bring my friends and share Alta joy.
This was my second time at Alta and unfortunately it wasn’t a great experience. The pacing was off in the service. In fact, we canceled two dishes as it had been more than 30 minutes before we got the last course. The drinks are overpriced and seriously watered down. The overall value wasn’t great. The ambiance is nice and the tasting meal options are good, but other than the fried goat cheese nothing else stood out as being worthwhile. Also, the service started out badly, but as we were obviously getting less happy, it did get a bit better. One other thing is that Alta became way too noisy. The restaurant wasn’t even full and the din was just too much.
The restaurant is nice but we were in a section with one other table that was quiet, cramped and unatmospheric. Our server was surly and unpleasant. Our food arrived before our wine, and we received 12 plates within an hour - certainly efficient, but really rushed and no time to enjoy the wine. We also left hungry and currently have a pizza on the way...portions were crazy small and really overpriced. Honestly, I wouldn’t recommend this place and I certainly wouldn’t waste time going back. So many other places in NYC! I now see other similar reviews about the service, price and atmosphere and I’m so disappointed I took our friends there!
Excellent food but grossly over priced for tiny portions
Awesome. The food comes out quick and the service is very attentive. They have an excellent sense of humor! The place is a hidden gem. Perfect for a date or a celebratory dinner
Usually love this restaurant but our meal and the service was incredibly disappointing. The waitress was surly and overworked. She barely checked in on us, spaced out our plates very awkwardly, and she didn't ask about allergies at all. Certain dishes were good, and others were mediocre. It's usually a restaurant I like to go to, but probably wont be coming back.
Nice night with my daughter. Tapas were all excellent. Very dark. Be careful of the stairs.
