Al's, as always, never disappoints! Quality food, impressive and creative presentation and well trained staff. Recommend this often.
As always this is a great restaurant. Nice, relaxing romantic evening.
Once again we climbed those stairs knowing that another amazing and delicious meal was waiting for us. We were not disappointed? They even prepared a favorite that is no longer on the menu! Who can ask for more?
Food, service and ambience were all consistently very good over the years. This night was no exception to the quality we have come to expect.
There was no greetings from the front person we encountered ountered as we entered restaurant.
She didnot even speak to you.
There was no good bye or thank you said as we left restaurant
Food was excellent. It was a busy night which slowed down the time between drinks, appetizers and entrees. Would recommend this restaurant.
Nice atmosphere. Took longer to get our food than what I had expected, but our server was great.
To start off with, we love Al's Upstairs. However, this most recent dinner did not live up to our previous experiences. We had reservations for my husbands birthday on a Tuesday night. The restaurant was packed and we were seated behind a large, loud group of people. The menu item I ordered was out, as was the dessert my husband wanted. The food was delicious, as always. However, there were only three waiters and we literally had to wait 20 minutes to get drinks. I do not blame our server. I attribute our experience to them being overbooked and understaffed. We will return in the future with hopes of our usual Al's Upstairs experience.
Good food, served hot, with excellent taste and thoughtful preparation.
Al's is one of our favorite go-to places in Columbia for special occasions. Never fails to be a great experience.
Enjoyed the overall service, nice setting, like dining in the dining room less like a restaurant! Food was awesome would definitely return
We ate at Al's with friends from out of town. We thought they would enjoy the food and the view. We were correct. The service is terrific and our food was perfect. I had the Chilean Sea Bass and it was excellent. I highly recommend Al's for any occasion.
Food was amazing. I am definitely going back soon.
Brought my date to dinner Saturday evening. The food was exceptional. The service was even better. We were taken care of by Justin. He was attentive, knowledgeable, and prompt without being intrusive. I was very impressed with the way he handled all his tables while taking the time to answer questions and interact with his guests
I have never been to Al's had no idea it was there and just loved it the food was amazing!
The whole experience was great. The waiter was honest about he would recommend for a good price meal.
We were passing through and found Al's on-line. When we arrived at the unpretentious building we were pleasantly surprised to be seated with a view across the river valley and the city center beyond. Our waiter was very helpful with suggestions and the meals were outstanding in flavor and presentation. I would recommend Al's to anyone looking for an upscale delicious dining experience in Columbia.
Wendy was wonderful and the food was incredible! Cannot wait to return!
Great food, great service but small so the noise level really depends on who is eating there that night. Tables are very close to others, but overall great experience, Charleston chicken was fantastic. Would definitely recommend.
Great view of Columbia. Staff was attentive and courteous. Outstanding food. Loved the atmosphere and the creative menu.
Nice overlooking views of river and USC in distance.
Charcuterie great. Fish my hisband loves. Sea bass. Pasta dishes very good. Oh and desserts. Mway.
Food was great, as always. Service was wonderful.
The salmon was quite excellent, and I would recommend it to anyone, However, the ravioli with filet medallions was far too sweet. Maybe folks with more education in cuisine would have known that from the description, but it was not obvious to the average person. The NY cheesecake was very good (although I have actually had better - cooked by my ex-wife, who was from New Jersey).
I wanted to book Al's Upstairs for my mom on Mother's Day, but we weren't able to make a reservation until the Tuesday following. They came highly recommended by a coworker of mine and suffice to say we were not disappointed with our dining experience. The service was great, the food was delicious and the view from the window seats were beautiful. We will definitely visit here again for dinner.
On several travel websites Al's Upstairs us listed under the heading of "Fine Dining". In all fairness, our meals were very good...the food was excellent - tastefully prepared and beautifully presented - and the service was very good. However, there were several little things which, when considered in total, really detracted from the "Fine Dining" experience. For example, there is no elevator (to dine at Al's Upstairs you had best be prepared to walk upstairs); the carpeting on the stairs is threadbare in spots; the plaster and paint in many spots where the stairwell meets the wall is chipped and flaking off; the room that "overlooks the river" (and that is a bit of a stretch) is very noisey because the walls are bare and there are no curtains or shades on the windows; acceptable attire for men at supper seems to be defined by deck shoes (no socks, of course), shorts (or blue jeans), and a polo shirt (the ladies were dressed for an evening out at a nice restaurant); and the chair I sat in was so loose and wobbly that it was more like sitting in a rocking chair than sitting in a dining table chair.
Recap: The food is great; however, if what you want is an evening of "Fine Dining" you should probably go elsewhere.
Great food, blackened Mahi was delicious. As always the Lobster Bisque was outstanding. Wonderful view of river and downtown.
Wonderful Italian restaurant! The food was awesome and the view of the city at night was spectacular. Definitely recommend!
Al's Upstairs never fails to impress. The knowledgeable and attentive staff are impressive. The food is amazing. And the ambiance can't be beat. It's our "go to" night out for a relaxing, delicious meal!
Great place for a date with. The food was great and the staff was knowledgeable of the food.
From the time of our making reservations to the actual dinner service, Al's Upstairs managed every aspect nicely. The food preparation was excellent and the staff was particularly friendly and professional. A delightful evening.
It was our first time eating here and chose it for a birthday dinner. The food was excellent, ambiance was nice and quiet, and waiter was very attentive. The desserts were delicious. Will definitely visit again.
The food is a little pricey but you definitely get value for the money. The meals are varied and I haven't had anything that wasn't delicious . The service is top notch and very pleasant. They have a separate room downstairs for large parties so you are disturbed. A great place to go.
Excellent meal. I was disappointed they removed the Osso Bucco from the menu but the lamb was outstanding.
Great! Excellent food.
We eat here often, but probably not as often as we should. The food is always terrific and the specials are creative and fantastic. I had the Red Snapper served over black bean risotto and with a mango chutney. My wife had the diver scallops wrapped with prosciutto and served over spaghetti squash. Both were evening specials.
Prices are so reasonable compared to other upscale restaurants in town.
We really appreciate the wine list having great selections we don't find at the other places in town. They have two Chardonnays from Sonoma-Cutrer---the Russian River and also The Cutrer, and both have reasonable prices. Not just the standard wine list from the local wine distributor with highly inflated prices.
So many good things on the menu that we have decided to try to come more often.
Your beef dish was incredible. The lemon drop the bartender made was the best my wife had in a few months and we tried a few restaurants. Unfortunately we had somewhere to get to, otherwise we would have stayed longer. Great ambiance, cozy and great.
Great place. Food was delicious
Food was amazing! Try the lobster bisque it is phenomenal, it was my first time trying key lime pie and that was delicious as well!! Great experience, great service, and great food!
Great night out.
The view is always spectacular. The food and drinks were delicious as well. A nice evening with a friend who is moving back north.
