Al's Upstairs Ratings and Reviews
I have been to Al's more than a dozen times, and I never tire of it! Best restaurant in Columbia. Scenic view looking over the river and downtown. Seafood is fresh. The lobster bisque is a treasure, you must order it! My wife who doesn't like lobster or lobster bisque loves their lobster bisque! It is served with a pastry on top and shrimp in the soup, just get it! Pasta a la Al is my favorite dish, but I've never had a bad dish or appetizer there. Reasonable price for what you get, but by no means an inexpensive dinner. It is a great restaurant and I highly recommend it!
We had a wonderful dining experience for our anniversary. Our server was very attentive and gave great suggestions. I love seafood and got mine with the lobster bisque which was delicious and the seafood alla al. My husband had a special ribeye which was cooked perfectly. Overall a wonderful anniversary meal.
On Saturday night we enjoyed an excellent dinner with family. We reserved with Open Table and were seated within 10 minutes of arrival even though it was very busy. The food and drinks were outstanding as was the service. My wife ordered a special that she did not care for and they replaced it with another entree and did not charge for either. To me....that showed exceptional service. We certainly will return!
I am completely and pleasantly surprised by how wonderful an experience we had at Al’s. The ambiance was amazing, the food superb, and the service was excellent. Even more, I was very impressed with the talent of the chef and their knowledge of not only HOW to prepare the food but also how MUCH was adequate.
All around a must-try gem of Columbia.
I have eaten at a lot of restaurants in the greater Columbia area over the years and as far as fine dining goes, Al's hit the trifecta for food, service, and quality. My wife and I loved everything about. Hunter was an excellent waiter providing just the right amount of attention. The timing of the kitchen was spot on for preparing the food allowing for excellent conversation with time between courses. I cant wait to go back....SOON!
Two of us went to this restaurant for a birthday celebration on a weekday because of its good reviews on Open Table. The food was good. However, there were a few things that would have made this establishment even better. The host welcoming guests needs more training on being more 'welcoming.' He was very impersonal and unfriendly. He failed to check me using my Open Table reservation and that I'd requested a window seat (and there were window seats open) and that we were also celebrating a birthday. I had to remind our waiter to make sure to check us in using my Open Table reservation, because restaurants often do not do this and I miss out on my OT points. Our waiter kept reminding us that food was going to take a while longer than normal and that he is very busy that evening so he may not be able to check on us as often as he could. Okay, that's honest. However, I noticed that the food for a table of four got their food before we did and they were seated way after us. The waiter even commented that our food order was going in line after the larger crowd. (Little did he know that I was paying attention to the when that 'crowd' was seated.) The waiter did not acknowledge to me if I wanted to do something special for the 'birthday' celebration. I could have complained at that moment, but it really killed the moment for me.
I'm thoroughly disappointed with this place. I really wanted to like it. But these little things really do make a big difference.
'Nothing Gold Can Stay...' The veal took an hour to come out, what's worse: no one seemed to notice or attempt to remediate, they didn't have the bottle of wine requested from the wine list, and the chairs were not comfortable...its a lovely spot overlooking our fair city, the menu is classic, and main dishes good--although the sides were completely unremarkable--but when it comes to hospitable glue that is indispensable to holding a memorable dining experience together Al's is just not Columbia's gold standard anymore and I won't be going back anytime soon.
