The Entire experience was Great!....from the food to the service!...It was worth the drive from Memphis...
A classic and traditional steakhouse. Portions are large, service was exceptional. An exceptional find. Located between the developed city center and industry. Walkable in daylight to the stadium. I try to get here every time I’m In St. Louis.
What a gem! I recently spent a few days in St. Louis on business and looked around, as usual, for locally-owned and operated restaurants to visit. I found my way to Al's with two friends and we walked back in time - where food quality, personal service, and a quiet dining atmosphere actually mattered. Bob, our waiter, is among the best I've ever encountered (and that goes for legendary culinary locations like New Orleans, NYC, and Miami). The house Pinot Noir was tasty. Our table's steaks were perfectly prepared. The thick grilled sea bass with stewed tomatoes and onions was over the top and full of flavor. Even the lobster bisque starter was every bit as good as the meal itself. And the dessert course - flaming Bananas Foster prepared tableside was perfectly paired with homemade ice cream. There's a reason Al's has been around for 93 years. It's the real deal.
The food was excellent & the service is very personal too!!
It had been years since I had been to Al’s. I decided to take my wife, who is not a native St. Louisan, to Al’s for her birthday since it is a legendary St. Louis restaurant. When we arrived there was no valet parking. There was no host or hostess, nor any bartender. The bar area had not a sole. We were greeted by a waiter who was tending to a table at the time. We were seated and told our waiter would be right over. 15 minuets later a waiter came by who told us our waiter would be right over, but would we like a drink. My wife asked for a wine list, but was told they did not have one. When she asked for Sauvignon Blanc, she was told they only had Chardonnay. Since there was not a bartender she was reluctant to order a cocktail. One of the treats of Al’s is the lack of menu and verbal description of the menu. Eventually our waiter came by and we ordered. Our appetizers were good, for the most part. The Lobster Thermidor was excellent, whereas the mussels were horribly over cooked. We asked “Our” waiter about a variety of wine options that were not reds and his response was they had none of those. The Salads arrived, the dressing was very good, but overall the salad was mediocre. As dinner arrived our other waiter suggested a Pinot Grigio, when initially Chardonnay was the only white option, finally my wife was able to have a drink. The Filet and Strip Steak were cooked perfectly and were excellent. Overall the food was good not great. The service was slow, but fair. The ambiance was tired, all but one tables were taken. Our other waiter made a rather interesting statement which describe the night. Al’s just doesn’t see the 2nd and 3rd Generations of former patrons...
The staff was wonderful and the cuisine was world class!
Outstanding meal, very personable service!!!
Al's is definitely a hidden gem! I couldn't tell you how many times I went right passed it without even knowing it was there. That is part of the charm though. Quiet, dark, beautiful. As you enter it feels like you are going back in time to a romantic place your grandparents would have went for a special occasion. The wait staff takes care of your night as soon as you step through the door. Traditional and classy coat check. Attentive but not annoying waiters. They are very knowledgeable about the history of the restaurant and building. Our waiter was very sweet and funny. He could tell we had never been there before, and guided us gently every step of the way through dinner. The food was more than amazing! I had the Lobster Bisque for our appetizer, the bread and blue cheese dip, the lemon sorbet to cleanse our pallets, and Chilain Sea Bass in Creole sauce with asparagus as my entree. Everything cooked to perfection. The sea bass was like butter! My husband had the 16oz NY Stip medium rare with the steak butter and asparagus, and said he had never had a steak cooked that perfect! I had a bit, and it just melted in your mouth! There is no printed menu, but that is no problem because they waiters have it memorized. A meal for two will cost at least $100 before tip, so keep that in mind. After all was said and done our bill (tip included) was $223. It was worth every penny! We will go back. After leaving I said my goal is to have a plaque on the cabinet... You have to go to get the joke.
Al's is a piece of St Louis history. It is something special that everyone should experience. The food is outstanding. The service is quiet and attentive. The lounge is out of a movie set. You think you are on a steamboat on the river. It is difficult to find on the river front but you can find it. It is well worth it.
Al’s is a class act and ambience that many restaurants have lost over time. Truly a elegant experience from days past and excellent history and service. Food is top notch and prepared perfectly! Family owned and operated by St. Louis family!
Al’s is my favorite restaurant. It is always awesome. But this time, it was somehow even better than normal.
I had the escargot, house salad, angel hair pasta with butter/garlic sauce, and the small filet with bernaise sauce. Sounds simple. It was all amazing. One of the best meals ever.
Service was impeccable as always (thanks, Eve).
Service was impeccable, food was good but others have entered the market with equivalent or better food for less.
Great service, incredible food and a memorable occasion
Al's is such a gem. Great history to take in. The staff is knowledgable of the place and the history; be sure to take it in. The food is classic. Definitely try to table-side Caesar salad. It is a special night out for sure.
Phenomenal food and service. A true classic restaurant.
We've been dining at Al's for over 30 years and the food has remained very good. It's a little shabby but that's part of the charm
We'll continue to eat there as long as it remains open.
Great service and a nice dining experience in a quiet atmosphere, full of local history.
Had a great evening, food was great (very filling too) and the atmosphere is very cool, not what you usually see these days
As always Al's was wonderful. Couldn't ask for better food or service. I always look forward to the tray menu presentation and the table side service. I highly recommend dining at Al's! Yummmmy!!
Food was good but not very imaginative, cocktails were horrible. Decoration and ambience is very, very dated
Wonderful food service and ambiance!!
Amazing food, amazing atmosphere/ambience and amazing service! My husband and I started the night off with a drink in the riverfront bar then ordered dinner in the dining room. I had the seafood pasta and my husband the filet mignon. We can't say enough good things about our meal; very flavorful and everything cooked to perfection!
Excellent, as always. This restaurant is a real jewel. There is no printed menu. The entre portion of the meal is a visual presentation that is quite impressive. The physical restaurant has an old world charm about it; and our waiter, Bob, made it an exceptionally pleasant ding experience.
Extraordinary food; extraordinary service. Al's is a must.
A 92 yr old local landmark restaurant owned by the same family. Caution! They don't print menus but provide a visual display of what's on the menu. I brought a group of 11 and was worried a bit because there were no prices anywhere and didn't want to ask. I was amazed at the end with the final bill which was an average of $79 per-person with wine/beer and gratuity.
The steaks were awesome (cut them with a fork quality)as well as the salads, appetizers, and desserts. While in between courses one of the owners entertained us with stories about "Al's" history and culture. Overall great place, I would eat at "Al's" again when in St. Louis.
Fabulous! This restaurant is one of a kind and the crown jewel of St Louis. Our steaks were perfection, seasoned just right with a slight char on the outside and tender juicy med rare temp inside. The fettuccini del monaco has been on the memu forever and is so rich and creamy. Service is impeccable yet very friendly. The history and stories elevate the dining experience into something very special. We had a great evening.
Al's restraint was so assume. The interior was so elegant, the atmosphere so peaceable and the food was out of this world. everything from our drinks to our to our desert was perfect. Our drinks never dried up and empty plates never stayed on the table more than a minute. The serves given to my wife and me was above expectations. My wife and I will be going back again. I recommend Al's to everyone. Al's is a must go to for fine dinning and good food.
Out of town with my mother for her birthday
My husband ate at Al's about 10 years ago. Every time we talk about visiting STL, Al's comes up, so of course we had to eat here! We had an amazing experience. The food was fantastic, the wait staff attentive and knowledgeable, and the atmosphere perfect for a date night. We also enjoyed the history lesson we got as we were heading out. We will be back!
My wife and I stumbled upon this place while on our anniversary trip. We arrived around 6pm for an early dinner. When we walked into the restaurant, we were stunned at where we were. The food was phenomenal, the environment was quiet and cozy and the service was top notch. We have never enjoyed a dining experience quite like this. Unforgettable.
Al's is my favorite restaurant. If I win the lottery you can find me every evening Tuesday through Saturday at First and Biddle. I've been dining at Al's for more than 40 years. I'm only 59 so, I'm hoping for another 40 years of the best food and drink on our planet!
Any evening at Al's is special. The table you reserve is yours for the evening. This is all about the fine dining experience. Ask and you will receive. There is no menu. Your waiter recites the menu in stages as your meal progresses. Take your time, there is no rush, get exactly what you want.
Pam and Gary, the owners, could not be more present or gracious in their hospitality. Al's is a truly family owned, four star restaurant where the customer is treated like royalty.
There is nothing you could order that would disappoint. My most common order is: escargot, salad with house dressing, steak Romano and Al's pasta. To kill for!
Be sure to visit the bar. It is an unique view of St. Louis' river heritage.
IT WAS GREAT FROM BEGINNING TO END. EVERYBODY THAT WAS WORKING DID A AWESOME JOB. PLANNING TO GO BACK REAL SOON
Best restaurant in St. Louis. My favorite restaurant any where.
My husband and I were looking for a great steak and seafood place that wasn't your normal chain restaurant. We had heard wonderful things about Al's and the food and all the history that encompassed the restaurant and thought we would go check it out. For starters, the tray menu presentation we thought was very creative and we really enjoyed listening to our server discripbe how each item can be prepared. The portions were large and the food itself was amazing. Our server was very attentive and made sure we were well taken care of all night. It was such a relaxing and enjoyable dining experience. We can't wait to go back and try more food items. We would definitely recommend Al's to anyone who is looking for great food and great atmosphere.
Went to Al's to celebrate my husbands birthday. We can not say enough wonderful things about Al's. The staff was very friendly and took great care of us. The food was delicious, my husband ordered the filet and I had lobster. We shared asparagus and mashed potatoes and ended the night with chocolate cake. Everything was cooked to perfection. If you are looking for a place to have a romantic dinner or just a nice night out go to Al's, you will have an amazing dining experience!
What can one say, Al's is and always has been spectacular. It is one of the ladt bastions of the true dining experience.
we really enjoyed Al's, would definitely come again <3
Outstanding dining experience. Food was delicious, fresh and expertly prepared. Steak Oscar was cooked perfectly, the best I have ever had. Eve our server was attentive, cordial and knowledgeable. The owner made sure we felt welcomed and shared some of the history we had seen on a PBS special. Al's is an iconic restaurant and can't wait to return.
Bob was our waiter and he did an outstanding job. The food was outstanding. Great place to dine.
