Al's Restaurant Ratings and Reviews
Al's is definitely a hidden gem! I couldn't tell you how many times I went right passed it without even knowing it was there. That is part of the charm though. Quiet, dark, beautiful. As you enter it feels like you are going back in time to a romantic place your grandparents would have went for a special occasion. The wait staff takes care of your night as soon as you step through the door. Traditional and classy coat check. Attentive but not annoying waiters. They are very knowledgeable about the history of the restaurant and building. Our waiter was very sweet and funny. He could tell we had never been there before, and guided us gently every step of the way through dinner. The food was more than amazing! I had the Lobster Bisque for our appetizer, the bread and blue cheese dip, the lemon sorbet to cleanse our pallets, and Chilain Sea Bass in Creole sauce with asparagus as my entree. Everything cooked to perfection. The sea bass was like butter! My husband had the 16oz NY Stip medium rare with the steak butter and asparagus, and said he had never had a steak cooked that perfect! I had a bit, and it just melted in your mouth! There is no printed menu, but that is no problem because they waiters have it memorized. A meal for two will cost at least $100 before tip, so keep that in mind. After all was said and done our bill (tip included) was $223. It was worth every penny! We will go back. After leaving I said my goal is to have a plaque on the cabinet... You have to go to get the joke.
Al's is a piece of St Louis history. It is something special that everyone should experience. The food is outstanding. The service is quiet and attentive. The lounge is out of a movie set. You think you are on a steamboat on the river. It is difficult to find on the river front but you can find it. It is well worth it.
Al’s is my favorite restaurant. It is always awesome. But this time, it was somehow even better than normal.
I had the escargot, house salad, angel hair pasta with butter/garlic sauce, and the small filet with bernaise sauce. Sounds simple. It was all amazing. One of the best meals ever.
Service was impeccable as always (thanks, Eve).
Amazing food, amazing atmosphere/ambience and amazing service! My husband and I started the night off with a drink in the riverfront bar then ordered dinner in the dining room. I had the seafood pasta and my husband the filet mignon. We can't say enough good things about our meal; very flavorful and everything cooked to perfection!
Excellent, as always. This restaurant is a real jewel. There is no printed menu. The entre portion of the meal is a visual presentation that is quite impressive. The physical restaurant has an old world charm about it; and our waiter, Bob, made it an exceptionally pleasant ding experience.
A 92 yr old local landmark restaurant owned by the same family. Caution! They don't print menus but provide a visual display of what's on the menu. I brought a group of 11 and was worried a bit because there were no prices anywhere and didn't want to ask. I was amazed at the end with the final bill which was an average of $79 per-person with wine/beer and gratuity.
The steaks were awesome (cut them with a fork quality)as well as the salads, appetizers, and desserts. While in between courses one of the owners entertained us with stories about "Al's" history and culture. Overall great place, I would eat at "Al's" again when in St. Louis.
Fabulous! This restaurant is one of a kind and the crown jewel of St Louis. Our steaks were perfection, seasoned just right with a slight char on the outside and tender juicy med rare temp inside. The fettuccini del monaco has been on the memu forever and is so rich and creamy. Service is impeccable yet very friendly. The history and stories elevate the dining experience into something very special. We had a great evening.
Al's restraint was so assume. The interior was so elegant, the atmosphere so peaceable and the food was out of this world. everything from our drinks to our to our desert was perfect. Our drinks never dried up and empty plates never stayed on the table more than a minute. The serves given to my wife and me was above expectations. My wife and I will be going back again. I recommend Al's to everyone. Al's is a must go to for fine dinning and good food.
My husband ate at Al's about 10 years ago. Every time we talk about visiting STL, Al's comes up, so of course we had to eat here! We had an amazing experience. The food was fantastic, the wait staff attentive and knowledgeable, and the atmosphere perfect for a date night. We also enjoyed the history lesson we got as we were heading out. We will be back!
My wife and I stumbled upon this place while on our anniversary trip. We arrived around 6pm for an early dinner. When we walked into the restaurant, we were stunned at where we were. The food was phenomenal, the environment was quiet and cozy and the service was top notch. We have never enjoyed a dining experience quite like this. Unforgettable.
Al's is my favorite restaurant. If I win the lottery you can find me every evening Tuesday through Saturday at First and Biddle. I've been dining at Al's for more than 40 years. I'm only 59 so, I'm hoping for another 40 years of the best food and drink on our planet!
Any evening at Al's is special. The table you reserve is yours for the evening. This is all about the fine dining experience. Ask and you will receive. There is no menu. Your waiter recites the menu in stages as your meal progresses. Take your time, there is no rush, get exactly what you want.
Pam and Gary, the owners, could not be more present or gracious in their hospitality. Al's is a truly family owned, four star restaurant where the customer is treated like royalty.
There is nothing you could order that would disappoint. My most common order is: escargot, salad with house dressing, steak Romano and Al's pasta. To kill for!
Be sure to visit the bar. It is an unique view of St. Louis' river heritage.
My husband and I were looking for a great steak and seafood place that wasn't your normal chain restaurant. We had heard wonderful things about Al's and the food and all the history that encompassed the restaurant and thought we would go check it out. For starters, the tray menu presentation we thought was very creative and we really enjoyed listening to our server discripbe how each item can be prepared. The portions were large and the food itself was amazing. Our server was very attentive and made sure we were well taken care of all night. It was such a relaxing and enjoyable dining experience. We can't wait to go back and try more food items. We would definitely recommend Al's to anyone who is looking for great food and great atmosphere.
Went to Al's to celebrate my husbands birthday. We can not say enough wonderful things about Al's. The staff was very friendly and took great care of us. The food was delicious, my husband ordered the filet and I had lobster. We shared asparagus and mashed potatoes and ended the night with chocolate cake. Everything was cooked to perfection. If you are looking for a place to have a romantic dinner or just a nice night out go to Al's, you will have an amazing dining experience!
Outstanding dining experience. Food was delicious, fresh and expertly prepared. Steak Oscar was cooked perfectly, the best I have ever had. Eve our server was attentive, cordial and knowledgeable. The owner made sure we felt welcomed and shared some of the history we had seen on a PBS special. Al's is an iconic restaurant and can't wait to return.
I haven't been to Al's for 2 or 3 years. it was always one of my favorite places. Because of past experiences I recommended Al's to an out of town guest and his wife.
I was very disappointed to say the least.
I suppose because we dined on a Tuesday the menu was limited to about 8 items. The food was marginal at best. The appetizers were fine, the salad was very bland except for salt and pepper and the entrees as I said were limited and not that good. Especially when you factor in the price.
The area never bothered me in the past but this trip there were several 9mm casings laying on the sidewalk. kind of scary when you run across that.
Maybe it was a bad day for Al's. I hope they turn it around.
Al's has really gone down hill. We were seated at a nice quiet corner. We ordered appetizers, steak, and lobster, and two sides and shared the meal. The appetizers were ok. The steak was so tiny, maybe 6 oz. for both of us to share. The lobster tail was split in half for us. It couldn't have been any more than 4 oz. apiece. The sides were carrots and asparagus, both cost a total of $16. We shared the sides also. The lobster was tough and like chewing beef jerky. My wife couldn't eat her 1/2. I was so hungry, I ate my tough half. The waiter too 1/2 the price of the lobster tail off the bill. Taking the 1/2 of the lobster tail off our bill was subtracting $38 from the bill. The total bill before tip was $180.
Now, I don't mind spending $200 for a meal to share with my wife but the value of what we got
was terrible. Al's has really gone downhill! I think Al's has been around too long and needs to close its doors. Those folks that review this restaurant as "high" are thinking of the meals they had in the 1980's.
Went for my Girlfriend's Birthday and we LOVED IT. The manager walks around giving the history of the place (not intrusive at all), the wait staff makes you feel very important, the food is wonderful, and the ambiance is great. A perfect St. Louis gem full of history, great food, and the ambiance you want on that perfect date spot.
Took out of town guest...super cute historic bar with steamboat motif and custom painted mural of St. Louis as it appeared in late 1800s, with 1800 vintage furnishings, beautiful antique cash register. The staff was very friendly and accommodating. The food selection was great and delicious.
Nice to find a unique restaurant, something different.
