Alpinist and the Goat
Now serving $7 lunch!
The filet board was amazing! The potatoes were the best I’ve ever had!! Also loved the fondue! Definitely will be back!!
One of us is Vegetarian so Fondue is always great. A local described the Alpinist and the Goat as "quirky" and she was on target.
It is located on the second floor and the decor is quaint. The staff are friendly and most seem to do just about everything. We were waited on by several people and with one of the dining spaces right off the kitchen you hear everything and our meal was punctuated by requests and conversation about what table number needed what the entire time.
The fondue itself was yummy. It is served with bread and apples and we ordered some grilled vegetables and I ordered a 6 oz fillet.
For dessert there is a chocolate fountain that I think is included in the meal. What unnerved us was watching child after child rummage through the fruit with their bare hands and multiple people take the plastic containers holding ice cream out of a small freezer and take the covers on and off. Despite requests from several diners, serving spoons were never put out. The hostess/waitress seemed to not understand what customers were asking when they asked if there were spoons to use to self-serve the fruit for the chocolate. Despite at least 3 people asking, serving spoons were never put out.
We also found the restroom and the shower it contains interesting.
All in all, the quality of the food would not be enough to overcome the short comings and we would not return. There are tons of great restaurants in Telluride even with Vegetarian options, so I would pass on this quirky but friendly establishment.
Tiny but terrific! French truffle was outstanding. Chef Urban most pleasant and shared some “secrets” with us. Caramel sauce figuratively and literally topped off the evening!
Insanely expensive a d extremely limited menu. We would not recommend this restaurant to anyone there are so many better choices in Telluride
The bread was ok
Ridiculously overpriced. Zero ambiance. Terrible service. The dessert fondue was a single stale cookie served in a plastic bag (?!) and a tiny portion of melted chocolate. The meal was a massive disappointment.
It was okay but not remarkable. The Fondue was good. I think it was fairly priced. The service was disappointing. Maybe they were just under staffed last night. It was okay.
We had a wonderful dinner. Franco did an excellent job taking care of us. The have a nice selection of standard fondues and some interesting twists. A good value for the expensive Telluride restaurant scene.
The menu is very confusing so the waiter (who was super nice) told us what we should get. The telluride cheese fondue was good but way overpriced. Basically a $100 appetizer for 4 people. The filet was very good but a very small serving. Our teenage son ate all of it so the rest of us basically ate asparagus and bread dipped in cheese. I was excited to order one of their specialty martinis with a sugar rim. It came in a glass (not a martini glass) with tons of ice and no sugar rim. Tasted nothing like the drink was advertised. The all inclusive dessert bar was fun for our teenage son but it’s basically melted chocolate with some strawberries and Rice Krispie treats. If they reduced the cheese fondue price and advertised it as an appetizer and increased the filet portion (with a slight reduction in price) so you could order 2-3 servings I would go back- otherwise we will not return.
Nice small family owned business with tasty fondue
This restaurant was a disaster. The service people are friendly, but slow, terrible, almost nonexistent service. Crowded and loud with tiny tables - Fire Marshall’s nightmare. Fondue and accompanying food was delicious, but we did not receive enough fondue for two (what we ordered). We ran out long before our delicious bread, Brussels sprouts and filet mignon. The dessert looks great on the menu, but was terrible - they were out of almost everything and the chocolate for dipping was not good. It is so easy to have great chocolate and they even screwed that up. I wondered how long the chocolate had been in the fountain, especially after I saw one of the waiters put strawberries straight from the store container into the dessert bar without washing them. They should serve fresh warm chocolate fondue for dessert. They were terribly understaffed and unbearably slow. I spoke to another friend about it who is also a long-time local and she said she had the same ridiculous experience TWO years ago and never went back! How is this place still in business?! They need to get their act together or shut their doors.
Service is garbage. Food is good but way overpriced. The desert is completely oversold. I can drizzle chocolate syrup on store bought rice crispiest for way less
Food and service were fantastic! Very accommodating on a holiday weekend.
Service was HORRIBLE
Food was delicious .
Space extremely crowded
The Mont Blanc Fondue with the brussel sprouts and the filet mignon was delightful to share! Ewan was a great cook!
This delightful fondue-specialising restaurant was a highlight of our stay in Telluride. Certainly worth the upstairs location, and the French Truffle Fondue was superb, enhanced by the al dente grilled asparagus side not to mention the addition of our “kirschwasser”’to the mix. Attentive service, cosy venue and a great experience reminiscent of times past, when fondue parties were the rage.
We loved Alpinist and the Goat. We will be coming back every time we visit Telluride!
My family loves this place. The fondue is delicious, a it has a unique, laid back atmosphere - small space, friendly staff and tasty food.
There was only 1 staff member who was the cook and waiter at the same time.
Great food and fun experience! It's in a tiny little upstairs space, which lends to it feeling like a unique find and fun experience. Loved the staff, they were super sweet and very prompt!
Lowsy service. Way over priced. No chocolate fondue. We will not go back.
Water glass missing, fondue was granular, cold $50 steak, no kid-friendly ice cream. Clueless waitstaff. And restaurant didn't have our Open Table reservation and almost moved us. I showed my confirmation. No apologies again. Then they say," Oh yeah, we've been having trouble with Open Table." If they knew they were having issues with Open Table, why did they assume we were in the wrong? Other problems too . . .
With all the great places to dine in Telluride, go to them and skip this spot!
Food was mediocre at best.
There was a bottle of windex sitting out on the dessert bar so you had to maneuver around it to get to the bar, which was not stocked at all as advertised on their menu! Old fruit and cookies and room temperature fondue :(
For $200 for 2 people I was expecting more - like clean glasses and fresh salad ... what a bummer!
Service? What service - we had to get up and get ourselves more water throughout the meal.
Cheese fondue was good but the portion was small. Served with garlic bread that was drenched in butter. We had a reservation and they weren’t able to seat us until 30 minutes later. Service was fair at best. The place is cute but extremely cramped and crowded. Very pricey for what you get. Just OK.
We had a 6:00 reservation, called to see if we could move it back and they said no, so we arrived a little before 6:00, were seated at 7:30 and served at 8:00. The wait staff was not concerned that we were being seated so late.
Everything was just OK. Service was poor. They didn’t bring food out at the same time. Wait staff seemed upset about something. Not very engaging. The restaurant was very cramped with not much ambiance.
We had a lovely time at this quaint restaurant. The space is small but the hospitality is big. We celebrated my birthday here and they made it so special! We had the Grapple and the Traditional cheese fondues and they were both amazing! The dessert fondue was very fun and served a little different than I’ve had it at other fondue restaurants as it was a self serve fondue with chocolate and caramel for dipping along with tons of dippers. Homemade ice cream was also included with the dessert fondue. It was amazing! Another bonus is that you don’t smell like oil when you leave the place as their entrees are fully cooked and brought out on a board. We had a wonderful time!
Very odd service. Was specifically told by the waiter our food was on its way out before the table next to us. Watched the next table get served desert before any food was brought to us.
Seated between the ice cream station and the door (within inches of each). Vibration from he compressor on the ice cream cooler felt in the two chairs with their backs to it. As others arrived on time and waited several minutes for their long delayed seating (3 parties - 11 people at one time), they stood within inches of the two seats backed to the entrance. The food was fine (but outrageously expensive for what it was - 4 people, no wine, no cocktails - over $200). We ate as quickly as we could and left.
Terrible service. We waited 20 minutes for the table we had booked. The food took 1 hour to prepare - and when we complained about, the waiter started to argue instead of apologizing. The wine was turned into vinegar. Absolutely the worst higher priced restaurant I have ever tried.
This is our family of five’s second time here and although it’s quite expensive for a pot of hot cheese, it’s delicious and we always enjoy our experience.
The chocolate fondue bar was not replenished and was average at best. The servers really need to be trained better. Our server was friendly but not knowledgeable about the wine or the menu. It’s still a fun experience and my kids enjoy it so we will most likely return.
We went here hoping for a cozy Christmas dinner. After eating at most of the places in Telluride, this is the only place that has disappointed us so far. $50 for a small pot of cheese, served with bread and apples is honestly ridiculous, and it is what we paid. Our server disappeared after we ordered drinks. I asked for a lemon drop, and he said, "is that on the menu" to which I replied "no", and the sever's response was, "if it is not on the menu then we don't make it," then he walked away. My husband and I witnessed a food throwing fight in the kitchen between another server and the "chef" who was a young 20-something and clearly not a chef. My husband ordered a second beer and we waited and waited, and finally we asked about it 20 minutes later, and the reply was "oh yeah, we are out of that." The chocolate fondue was not fresh at all and the bites were cheap, from a store. The restaurant is also so, so small it would give any normal person a case of claustrophobia. Out of all our eats in Telluride, so far this is the only place we would NEVER recommend, which is sad because we love fondue.
We had a wonderful dinner at this charming restaurant in Telluride! Our party of five enjoyed Traditional and Scrapple fondue plus two filet boards. We had a delicious meal and the service was superb. Can't wait to go back! My only suggestion is to skip the ice cream desert bar and go to Telluride Truffle instead.
The food was wonderful. We had the Telluride Scrapple for 2 @ $28 pp and although there were 3 of us, there was plenty of cheese left over at the end of the meal. It was a tangy cheese and went well with the sweeter dipping items. We also ordered a Filet Board @ $48 and added a 6 oz filet mignon @ $36 (definitely pricey for 8 bites of meat). The items on the Filet Board were fantastic! We all enjoyed the Dessert Bar ($9 pp when ordered with a meal) very much. Add a few craft beers and our final bill before tip was just shy of $200 for the 3 of us. The restaurant is VERY cozy so be aware you will be sitting very close to your neighbors. The server was very sweet and attentive, although, there was a bit of a language barrier that made ordering somewhat confusing. Overall, we would recommend this restaurant, if you aren't adverse to spending the $. The experience was fun!
Great service! Fondue texture was great but taste was not comparable to a real classic swiss cheese fondue. Portion was small especially for the price but we got a free second portion, which was very nice and great customer service.
Love this quaint place. Food is exceptional. The telluride scrapple with the filet board is A.M.A.Z.I.N.G! How can you go wrong with cheese, bacon and filet mixed into a thrilling concoction of fondue!
Amazing truffle fondue
I always love going. Can never go wrong with fondue
Always great food! Nice room. Good service. One of my favs in Telluride.
