Disappointed in my Latest trip to Alla Spina. Our waitress was really strapped and the food was slow to table. We ordered a second round of drinks which didn't come until we are nearly done with our meal. $11 for a Bellini? It was the smallest pour I've ever seen. Very disappointed because most times I've had a great experience there. It was the day of the Broad Street run and so they knew it was going to be busy - every table was packed.
We had a group of six with friends visiting from NC so wanted to show them some of Philly on the north side of Broad Street. It may have been a mismatch of expectations. The menu is interesting, the beer selection is great. Our waiter was somewhat non-attentive even when it wasn't busy, with a big distracting picture of dog on his t-shirt and a pretty casual attitude about taking care of us. The loaded french fries special was ok- fries w/ sauce, two of had calimari salad, which was supposed to be on arugula, but was on spring mix w/ no explanation of the change. Last- I ordered coffee- never came- reminded the waiter who then brought over coffee that was lukewarm. Amazing how a restaurant would not have hot coffee ready. Not a match for us.
Came on a Friday night and it was overly crowded. Drinks were excellent! Food was great - Crispy pig tails (could eat a whole plate full), North Philly Cheesesteak (delicious, a touch too salty) and Carbonara Mac-n-Cheese (a bit bland, needed the egg to be less cooked to coat the pasta, a little on the dry side).
Service and ambiance were great! Will definitely come back and recommend to friends.
Food was great
Neighborhood is quiet and clean
Loved the decor and we ate outside
Service was on the slower side Tuesday night. It took a while to get drinks and our server was less than enthusiastic/wasn't super friendly, but did his job. Our food took over an hour, which is a bit understanding since it was a party of 9. We didn't complain but the manager sent out 2 orders of pretzel bites (which was SO nice) but he brought them out literally 1 min before the food arrived, and they were cold upon arrival, so we didn't even get to enjoy the free appetizer. Haha, it's the thought that counts. Also, they were out of two entrees which a few people were hoping to get-- the steak and the pig pot pie. Disappointing. The bucket of chicken was good and so was the Mac & cheese with the fried egg. Overall it was fine, but nothing my family from out of town would rave home about.
Met friends at Alla Spina specifically for the $1.00 oysters. And the oyster eaters were quite happy with the James RIver oysters that were offered. The place has an industrial feel -- lots of metal and pipes and graffiti. It was not packed on a Monday night, but still had considerably high noise level.
Burgers were great, drinks were great, and our waiter was great.
We ordered several appetizers rather than a main dish and you would think out of six that we ordered at least ONE dish would be good or even ok.. very very disappointing. Tuna crudo flavorless. Mushrooms were salty. Chicken wings were blah. Hummus maybe was ok at best. The combo of broccoli rabe and MAC n cheese just didn't work. And my friend and husband who had wine for dinner both said it was one of the worst reds they've ever had. Won't be back :/
Service was slow (but servers were nice) and it took a while to get our food, but the food itself was great, as was the beer list. So, go if you want to hang out and drink good beer and don't have anywhere to be and aren't on the verge of hanger, go.
Good beers and small plates. Good out door seating. Pool table and Fooz ball
Great food and service. Very comfortable! A terrific spot!
Not in love. Mediocre all around. Wanted and expected better! 😿
Nice place with a great bar and good food. Happy hour specials are a good deal
They were kind enough to allow us to love tables as we were in front of the door. The food was wonderful, but the service was lacking. Overall a good visit and will be back! The fried cauliflower was amazing!!
WHAT HAPPENED TO THIS PLACE?
The Alla Spina I went to a year ago is no more. All the dishes that made this place great have been replaced by a dumbed down, poorly executed menu.
Nearly everything was oppressively salty (and I love salt), from the fried cauliflower to the pretzel to the (overcooked) fried chicken to the pork chop. Additionally the space is too dark, the music is too loud, and the service too anemic. Our server could barely take our order because of how loud the music was.
This place needs a serious reboot.
I would recommend just going for drinks; they have a solid beer list. The food was underwhelming.
Great new menu. Wonderful warm atmosphere
Enjoyed oysters and small plates
Bummer to see that the menu changed. Miss the old pig-heavy options! Still a great place to eat and hang for a bit!
We have been to Alla Spina many times, but this is the first since the purchase by Urban Outfitters. We walked in at 7:10 on a Saturday and found the place nearly empty; although the crowd grew as it approached 8:30. That was a shock to us as Alla Spina had always been a popular spot.
The menu has also become American contemporary comfort food instead of the Vetri style modern Italian. Service was hit or miss. Our server had to ask the kitchen about dishes when we inquired - something we never experienced in a Vetri operation.
We were also shocked that the coasters were advertisements and TVs and a pool table had been installed. To us, this removed a lot of the charm of the old Alla Spina.
Overall, this is still a good casual restaurant, but it has lost a lot of its charm.
I wanted to update this review from the one I submitted months ago. I was just here on 3/25 and the menu has been changed again but this time to a much better format than the one they changed it to in January. I still miss the honey glazed chicken, but certainly a great place to go, hang, and eat.
The apple pie pancakes that we shared as a table were a clear favorite. The pancakes themselves were so fluffy and the flavor was great. I didn't live my beer cheese toast but others at the table cleared their biscuits and gravy, cheeseburger and eggs Benedict. The drinks were good too
Really nice we all loved this place it was a great place for my birthday
Food was good, beer was cold, and server (Joe) was very helpful and attentive
The pigs head bruschetta was to die for! So was the grilled cheese, AND housemade choco taco. The whole meal was worth writing home about. 10/10
I live in Baltimore, but have eaten dinner at Alla Spina twice in the past two years. Great, hip atmosphere and vibe. The menu is not extensive, but I feel it has something for everyone. The pretzel and cheese dip is fantastic. This time I tried the fried pickled cauliflower (yummy) and the tuna crudo (outstanding). My boyfriend had the fried chicken, which I also sampled. The biscuit that came with the chicken was to die for, but unfortunately we were too full from all of the other food to finish it. We also enjoyed the "jukebox" and played some music while we dined.
great food/menu but service was surprisingly bad for what typically experience at Vertri restaurant group.
Service was slow, and the food (although tasty) wasn't hot upon arrival to our table. Certainly a nice atmosphere for a slow and casual meal, but order your drinks in multiples so your glass has something in it!
Have been there many, many times and usually had great food but this evening was very disappointing. Apps and deserts were great but the meals were not. Burger was rare when specifically asked for well done, grilled cheese was burnt, and salad dressing was so tart it was virtually inedible. Real shame one of our favorite places in the past but Friday was rough at at $160 for 4 sandwiches I would hope the quality would be better. Should be noted that we had an early dinner so I can't blame the poor quality of the food on the place being that busy, we were one of only a handful of tables. Too many options in the neighborhood that may be more consistent, likely not going back here in the near future.
Came for unexpected dinner with friends. Great atmosphere and had semi-outside dining which was probably better than being on the street! Food was excellent. Everyone enjoyed. Waitress was very friendly but not as familiar with the menu in being able to explain contents which is surprising. And two things we ordered they were out of and hadn't told us up front. Other than that it was quite good!
Food was awesome, the service wasn't the greatest. They seemed to be confused as to where the food should go and they forgot to put in one of our orders. They also made a mistake a bill and had to redo the bill.
The beer selection was impressive and very good . Bartender was helpful with selections. Server was great. Food was a real disappointment. Entrees were lukewarm. The vesl app was terrible . We couldn't even get past first bite.
Best part was desert ( Choco taco and strawberry good good) and beer.
This was a family birthday dinner and was specifically requested recommended by my 23 year old son. The food was excellent, the service very good, the environment perfect for him and his 21 and 18 year old sisters (although not so much for me at 63). The temperature was slightly chilly (for a geezer like me) but one section of glass wall was open and the night was a cool fall one, so that was fine. Overall, it was definitely worth the drive from Wayne, near King of Prussia. to go there.
Not many options for brunch. The meal was fine, not fantastic. I would return to try dinner, however the music was so loud that I probably would not return. Due to the concrete floors and open ceilings it's not the ideal restaurant to go to if you want to have a conversation where you are not competing with the music.
My date and I made a last minute decision since we got to meet each other earlier than expected. We both had been craving Italian and always wanted to try this spot out. It is tucked away in a back street which is nice if your sitting outside. The waitress' were very nice and explained the menu and drinks. I was surprised because on Opentable it had said it was an Italian restaurant, but the menu did not reflect that which was disappointing. The menu was also very small usually with 3-4 items for each section. I ended up getting the squash grilled cheese which was amazing. I would recommend coming for a late lunch so you can sit outside or a casual date. All in all it was good, but definitely not an Italian spot.
Walked here after the Rock n Roll Half Marathon and had a great brunch, the guys were pleased with the beer list and the girls had some beer cocktails. I wanted everything on the brunch menu! Our table ordered chicken and waffles with crispy fried chicken, lemon curd pancakes with blueberry syrup, and biscuits with duck, everything was spot on and very filling. There was complimentary coffee cake that was moist and delicious. The big garage door was open and they have couches set up around a tv for watching the game, big bar, looked like there was nice outside seating in a little side garden nook. Staff was friendly and chill but professional, and the soundtrack was awesome, Beastie Boys and Sublime played while we ate. I definitely want to go back for an event like Oktoberfest, or happy hour or dinner.
Just ok.... not as good as it looked on the food network
Their mixed drinks are to die for!
Portion sizes were perfect. Some places give you way too much food. This was almost tapas sizes but a little more. overall great food, reasonable cost, enjoyable atmosphere, great service.
Alla Spina was the chosen destination because our son goes to Temple and it was convenient. We were disappointed with the very limited menu. The beer list was the our waitress and chef's very accommodating attitudes toward our son's food allergies were the evening's highlights. We found out after he had ordered the wings that he could not eat them because they fry the shellfish in the same oil as the chicken. So the waitress made a big attempt to make up for it. We were disgusted at finding out that both meat and fish are fried in the same oil. We also enjoyed sitting outside. The noise level inside is very high and the temperature is very cold so we were happy we were able to sit outdoors. Also, for a restaurant with an Italian name, the bread served did not approximate good Italian bread at all. We have been similarly disappointed with 2 of Vetri's other restaurants (Vetri pizza and Osteria) where we have ordered various dishes and feel they are highly overrated. So we probably won't be back.
Fun evening eating iron chef meal and meeting Mark Vetri!
Vetri's special 3 course veal dinner was exceptional.
