Took the family here and got a fantastic view of the sunset from our table. The service was a little slow however despite it not being a full restaurant. Our appetizers came before the bread and the shell and water bowls came well after we received the Cioppino. The food was great and worth the money, just needed better service.
Old school kind of snobby, service was just ok. No idea how t
Food was great except the dry choc cake.
Loved half n half calamari
Was just loving the sauté when it was all gone
Only one refill of my ice tea
I really wanted to like this place as we were referred by some friends that told of the wonderful history to this place. It has a beautiful view and good restaurant atmosphere.
We were seated by the widow overlooking the harbor and this is where it goes down hill - ugh!.
We ordered a few apps and some drinks - after a bit only half of the apps came, waiter forgot to order the other one, as well he forgot any drinks - did finally bring water. We had to repeatedly ask our waiter (Bill) several times to refill our water and drinks - they would sit empty leaving us with nothing to drink.
Our meal final came out and just looked - eh! I ordered the steamed lobster and it was awful - rubbery and covered in tomalley, other entrees were very average in taste and presentation- with ok for taste. Ravioli tasted like canned sauce and mushroom risotto was undercooked and seasoned.
The original owner (Frank) must be very disappointed in the condition and service coming from the establishment currently - go elsewhere as this is below average at above average pricing.
Disclaimer there were several other wait personnel that appeared much better with their service - although this would not help the food coming from the kitchen.
I've ate here before and had an absolute blast. However this time I was not so fortunate. It was my fiancés birthday, and we were so aggravated we almost left. We made a reservation but when we got there we waited almost 30 minutes to talk to the hostess. Then my fiancé ordered a bottle of wine, and the waiter would not bring the bottle because I did not have an ID on me. My fiancé had just turned 24, and showed his ID but this apparently did not matter. The waiter continued to bring up the fact that I had forgotten my ID, and I was simply embarrassed the entire time we were eating. We then waiting almost 45 minutes for our food, soup and a crab entre. We did not have water at our table for over 20 minutes. I will never go back to Alioto's. Truly terrible experience
Very nice place!! Very good food!
The food was served cold, saturated with butter and with little to no flavor. Drinks where fizzled out. Alcoholic beverage lacked proper ingredients as well as liquor. Service was great, but dining experience was expensive and horrible!
Great meal! The wait staff was knowledgeable, attentive, and provided great service. Alioto's will continue to be great destination for dinner!
Claudia was a gracious hostess and our waiter, John, was friendly, fun and attentive. Great experience.
Excellent dining experience, with great food and great service.
This is a traditional SFO harborside restaurant. I’ve eaten here many times over more than forty years. The room is lovely and the service perfect. The menu seemed a bit limited this time hence the four star rating. The Tuna I had was good. The chowder excellent and the crab and dessert excellent. Nice wine list at ok prices. Sitting at the window watching the sun go down over the harbor is always a treat. Stick to the basics and local dishes and you will be delighted.
Overall, I enjoyed my meal and our waiter was attentive and causal, kind of the way we prefer it. The filet my wife ordered was cooked to perfection and the cut was tender. My shrimp pots were MOUTH-watering. The risotto excellent if not a little heavy.
The location is a little tired, could use a little renovations and cleaning. The views of the bay are marvelous, but this can be found all along the wharf.
The only true complaint I have, and which is not just at this restaurant, is the “SF HEALTH TAX”. In a nutshell, the restaurant charges a surcharge because they are charged a fee by the city for not providing healthcare for employees (so employees receive health insurance through a state plan, I’m assuming this is an ACA type of plan). First, it’s not apparent that you will be charged this in the bill. I for one think it should be the restaurant paying for healthcare for their employees, you can’t keep the whole pie for yourself. Taxing me as if to place the blame on the city is absurd. I guess an argument could be made that you can lower the tip some since technically you are now paying for the employees health insurance, but we still left 20% this time around.
At the end of the day, this should be posted front and center in the menu, and explain why we are charged. The city should regulate the wording, so it doesn’t seem like just another city tax.
I have never had such terrible service! It seemed like we were simply forgotten but the restaurant was nearly empty so I am not sure how that is possible. 30 minutes past being seated we finally flagged someone down for our appetizer order and drinks. It took another 40 minutes for us to put in our order, finally having to literally wave our hands in the air to get someone to come over. Once ordering we said we were on a time limit as we had to meet with our students at the pier. We were told no problem, however an additional 40 minutes later I had to request my food be put in a box to go before It ever arrived so I could meet up with the kids. We had a leisurely 2 hours to eat dinner here and It couldn’t be accomplished. The food was decent, when I ate It in a bench with my students at the pier but that never should of been the case.
There was never even an apology from the staff concerning the lack of service. It just seemed like no one cared. The view is not that great to put up with service that terrible.
They couldn’t find the reservation so they didn’t know it was for our anniversary and they didn’t ask.
Very good all around ... great seafood & waterfront view.
Dinner tonight was outstanding from salad, through fresh fish and vegetables to dessert of cheesecake and strawberries, closed out by espresso. Our waiter, Solomon from Ethiopia was just amazing. Bravo my friend. I hope to be in your good country within the year.
After years of seeing Alioto's decline in both quality and service, we are done. From the time you enter the door and smell years of rancid seafood in the worn carpet to the reception desk where a staff member is lolling on a couch fast asleep and snoring, you get the impression they simply have stopped caring. Getting a service set up for three (not 2) was remarkably hard. Ordering appetizers/salad clearly triggered the reheating of previously prepared dishes because shortly after soup and salad were served, the entrees showed up. The waiter whisked them away when he saw what was going on but they must have spent 20 minutes under a heat lamp because they reappeared the worse for wear. Sensing the risks of ordering an actual entree, I just ordered a crabcake. It was a tired little pancake of crabmeat (no lump, all picked over) drowned in lukewarm butter (or butter flavored topping: I couldn't tell). No dessert seemed enticing enough to keep us there.
RIP, Alioto's. You can't survive on the few tourists who stumble in the door or those long-timers like us who remember the days when your restaurant was a San Francisco institution.
In the City for the weekend with my honey and went to lunch at Alioto's. Been there many times and love the grilled salmon. My wife had the chicken and she loved it. The only reason why the service got 4 stars and not 5 stars was because the waiter forgot to bring me the clam chowder that i had ordered, but i was not billed for it so no big deal. I was full from my lunch anyway. Great food and nice ambiance.
We got a window seat looking out onto the water. Our waitress was very friendly, but at the same time left us alone to talk. It was a great experience.
Nona's Cioppino is a must, here! So fresh and tasty. Crab, mussels and clams cooked to perfection - cannoli and cappuccino was the perfect ending. Love the view and friendly service.
We were there on a busy Saturday night on the wharf. The staff were very accommodating and had quite a crowd to deal with. Our table was a little delayed, however the staff graciously made up for it by seating us in the private dining room. We had a wonderful time, the food and drinks were excellent and the staff were attentive and friendly. Lovely atmosphere, I would highly recommend it.
Excellent Saturday night at Alioto’s. Best calamari combo ever. Shrimp pots were outstanding. Crab stuffed sole amazing. Go and bring friends!
My sisters and I enjoyed a wonderful meal here, with great food and great service. I am hoping to come back again soon!
The staff, food, and ambiance are amazing. This is how dining in the bay should be! We were constantly impressed with the entire staffs attentiveness to every detail of our time there as well as the immaculate food.
Fresh menu with seafood and pasta. A bit pricey but tasty. Service was very good and attentive
Had a great time! Food was very good. Had half a crab also mushroom rissoto. Very rich but excellent! Staff was awesome!
Alioto’s was the perfect location to celebrate my Valentine Birthday!
The fish was over-sated, the fried calamari and shrimp was over-fried
Fine for restaurant clearly aimed at Fisherman’s Wharf tourists.
The people who work at Alioto's are always so friendly and service oriented. They always give me a great table when requested.
Great views, service and food. Love this restaurant!!
We arrived early and they set us up with no problems! Fantastic service and great food! Thank you
Service was very slow, drinks were not refilled.
We really enjoyed the wide variety of seafood options. Everything was quite delicious. Service was reasonable overall. View was excellent.
Tim our waiter was wonderful. Good laughs and very friendly
This is our place to go when in SF and the Wharf. While it's been around for decades - it never disappoints. The food is great and so is the service. We were well taken care of and will go back if we are back in the area again.
Excellent service and attention to detail. Maitre d was OUTSTANDING!! Want to go back there first when in SF again.
the best place to eat in pier 39 in san francisco,
I have been dining at Alioto's for many years when in San Francisco, starting with my honeymoon in 1987 and most recently earlier this week. The experience has always been consistently excellent over the past 30 years. I usually try to get there before sundown as there isn't a better view of the Golden Gate Bridge as the sun sets anywhere else on Fisherman's Wharf. The service, the fresh seafood impeccably prepared, the well-curated wine list and the ambience; all are superb every time. Congratulations, Alioto Family!
We visited this place a few time. It is not cheap, but the food (fish) and service is great. View of the Golden Gate is also attractive.
