About Alice's Restaurant
"Great food, comfortable drink" is the mission, but at Alice’s, it's about much more than that. With a broad deck that overlooks the main stretch of Lake Hopatcong, fresh produce from nearby Halsey Island, and a naturally simple (but rustic) decor, Alice's is a place that celebrates lake living and good company.
Lake Hopatcong resident Alice Szigethy opened Alice's in June 2009 to expand the selection of lake destinations. In this reinvention of a building that had been a series of eateries over several decades, the space features vaulted ceilings, reclaimed-barn-wood walls, comfy booths, and a full bar that extends from the airy interior to the breezy deck. A mahogany seating bar runs the length of the deck so guests can sit and enjoy a clear panorama of the water, and an austere metal awning gives outdoor diners a shady place to enjoy the view, the breeze-and, of course, the food.

Alice's Restaurant Ratings and Reviews
I was really looking forward to this experience. The restaurant is always busy, and is very popular. The setting is gorgeous, although even after requesting a table by the water, we were seated as far away from the windows as possible. And although we had reservations, our table was not set for 4 and we had to keep asking for basic items (napkins, water glasses). The wine list is so-so. The entire experience was decent, but not outstanding.
Our food was good enough, but not what I would expect for what we paid. I had a scallops special, and not all the scallops had been properly cleaned. I asked for my steak medium rare, and my partner asked for medium -- but the two steaks were switched. Since they were two different cuts, we could not just trade plates. My sides were done well, but presentation was a bit lacking as my potatoes looked like they had been thrown on as an afterthought.
The noise level here is high because the dining room is small, but it's not unbearable. During dinner it seems that someone turned down the overhead music a bit, which was good as it had been too loud. The service was good in term of answering questions, clearing plates, etc, but getting the temperature of the steaks crossed and not noticing that the table wasn't set up properly are detail errors that at this price point shouldn't happen. Hopefully, though, this was just an off day for the restaurant, and the quality is usually more consistent.
The food is the place! Ambience is nice. In better weather the view is great but the food, the food, the food. Four of us with different dishes start to finish. We could not decide which was better as they were all excellent and delicious and different. BRAVO Chef David Drake!
This was a fabulous restaurant for a relaxing sunset dinner. The view looking west on Lake Hopatcong can't be beat! The food is very good to excellent - the salmon was done perfectly - crisp on the outside but juicy on the inside. The pasta course was flavorful but overcooked. When the inside is full the noise level is moderate but you don't get the beautiful view. If the outside deck is available it's the best place to dine. Service is spot on - much better than it used to be. We will go back.
It's cozy, it's on the lake, the sunsets are beautiful, the drinks are fantastic, the price is moderate....most importantly the food is wonderfully prepared, looks great plates and tastes amazing. You could have gotten 5 stars overall if there was air conditioning.....we just about melted when we were there.
I was very disappointed in the crab cake sandwich. It was dry and not "chockfull" of crabmeat, as I expected it to be.
I have eaten here several times and the entrees have always been very good. The wait service was not very attentive.
Don't know what the problem is? Over all a very big disappointment
Not sure how easy it would be to find Alice's without GPS, but sure glad we had it and found this place. It was a very warm day and my buddy and I looked forward to a nice place by the water to enjoy dinner on a Monday night while on business. We definitely found it at Alice's. Great service and very good food. We sat on the deck looking out over the lake. It was still pretty warm there, but some cool drinks helped with that. The meal was relaxed to the point where our bill didn't come until our server was sure we didn't want anything else. Nice touch. If you are in northern NJ and in nice weather (or not so nice - the dining room looked very nice, too), please try Alice's
If you want to relax and enjoy a constant changing view of the lake, go to Alices. They just opened a mini golf area down by the water with an elegant walkway from the restaurant. So teens can eat then go play golf. My dinner was the scallops with rice and it was wonderful. My husband had the risotto with fresh vegetables and cheddar and parma, I could not get over how long it remained hot in the bowl. I almost ordered that dish but was glad I could grab a few bites, just delicious. My advice, bring sunglasses, you are going to need them if you are there early, they have awnings to shade you but the sun off the water can sometimes be very bright though the glare goes down eventually. Drinks pricey but where else can you enjoy such a view?
We had the salmon and it was excellent. I definitely recommend going there and trying it. Definitely make reservations, Alice's is a busy place and we were there on a Thursday night. Their docks are very nice, and there is miniature golf if you're interested after your meal.
It is a 60 mile round trip to get there and it is always worth it. Great comfort food in the winter, great views, outdoor dining, and wonderful food in the summer. I had striped bass on this visit and it was outstanding. French onion soup was rich and wonderful for a cold winter night. Our other dish was risotto with grilled shrimp outstanding. They also have some of the best ice cream you will ever have.
My wife an I have visited Alices several times, it is our special occation spot. The food is always well prepared, a nice wine list, and the service is always professional and friendly. We prefer a quieter setting so when it's just us two we try for a later reservation. The menu is limited and somewhat pricey which prevents us from frquenting more often. A great spot to take a date
I had the organic chicken and it was very good. It was served with garlic polenta to die for it was delicious. Had calamari that was excellent . My partner had the skirt steak very good. The only thing that was not so good was the dandelion side dish and it also came with my meal . It was too chewy . You could chew it for a hour and it was tough. I don't know if they chopped it that would help., I wouldn't order that again. Otherwise everything was excellent and I would go back for sure.
1st time. Staff very attentive. Comfortable inside and out with beautiful lake view. My bass fish special was overpriced. Came with a bean like salad and strange sauce that did not compliment the fish which was dry and bland. All in all enjoyed the rest of the food and appreciated the choice of sparking and fresh water. I would go back to sample the other menu items.
As always we had a great time at Alice's, with one exception. We attempted to add our daughter to our table, on 06/16. We were told there was no seating available. We had to advise our daughter that she couldn't be with Dad on Father's Day. This created very bad family dynamics. When we arrived at Alice's @ 12:15 p.m., there was plenty of seating available, a number of open tables, which remained open at the time we departed. This was quite upsetting to our family. As always, the food was outstanding.
I made a reservation requesting an outside table, which there were plenty of yet they seated us in the doorway. I wasn't happy with our table. You need to make sure you are specific with the hostess when stating what you want.
The burger was bland and tasteless and the ceasar salad had too much lemon in it. The bbq was tasty.
We have loved Alice's ever since we first discovered it and we're so happy to see so many other people enjoying it too. The food is good, very good, but it's the overall ambiance, and the great views over the water, plus top notch service that really keep us coming back again and again. You feel like you've really been on a "break", yet it's close to home.
Food was great as usual, really love the apple crisp for dessert. We were disappointed with our waitress. It took forever to come to our table, barely stopped by, never brought the bread before our meal, and then handed us the bill while we were enjoying our dessert. Wish we had gotten one of the other wait staff, since all the others looked like they were on the ball...
What a wonderful addition to Lake Hopatcong! The ambience, service, and food are all great. Everything is done right. The 2 complimentary bottles of water, one sparkling, one flat, in cool blue and clear bottles is a nice extra. Fresh flowers on the table, beautiful views of the lake and cool vibe make this an excellent choice for a good night out. I have been to Alice's at least 4 times, and can't wait to return. Might buy a t- shirt with the cool logo next time...
The service and food at Alice's Restaurant couldn't be better. I was excited by the menu options and everything was cooked perfectly, I contemplated to my girlfriend that I was thinking of ordering everything on the soup and salad selection as I couldn't decide. Once our entrees arrived they were perfectly cooked and well timed after our appetizers.
Good, down-to-earth food - old favorites like ribs, meatloaf, pulled pork, burgers, as well as up-scale items and specials. Also a long list of dessert; the two we had were delicious. Bottles of still and sparkling water are provided to the tables. Great practice! Lots of choices for wine by the glass as well as special martinis. Service was efficient and friendly. Sound travels in the main restaurant, so if there is a large group dining, you won't be able to have an easy conversation except while the group is eating. The porch is quieter and has great heaters to keep warm in winter. We had an Open Table gift card to use and unfortunately found out that they couldn't take it because it was issued by Amex and they don't take Amex!
The food was under-seasoned. I had the calamari appetizer and it had no flavor because the calamari and the coating were not seasoned with any salt. Disappointing. Could have been really good. Not a gourmet place but good for a average meal. Not too expensive either.
Love this restaurant---I've only been here during the winter months, but I look forward to dining outside when the weather warms up. The food is fresh and delicious, the selection is creative and diverse and the ambiance is warm and inviting. Hostess and servers were all friendly and professional. Alice's Restaurant is the perfect blend of urban sophistication and rustic casual. I look forward to my next dining experience here!
