Alexander's - Roanoke
Originally constructed as Roanoke's largest office supply company in the 1880s, our vintage building has been transformed into a retro chic, bohemian rendition of the classic urban restaurant of our great culinary cities. The art, furnishings, lighting, mirrors and fixtures are all found pieces of Roanoke's rich arts and architectural history. So relax and let's start making your memories at Alexander's.

Excellent food. Steaks and the quail well worth the price. Gets noisy after 7:30
Always consistently excellent overall!
Fantastic food and atmosphere, service was impeccable. A place that was very upscale, much appreciated and hard to find in Roanoke area. Most places in Roanoke area might have good food, atmosphere nice, but the customers come dressed from very nice to jeans and tee shirts. My husband and I enjoy having an elegant dinner with the atmosphere to match. This is the restaurant for just that!
The food and service are exceptional at Alexander’s. From having our coats checked upon entering the restaurant to attentive servers all evening. My companion had veal and I had corvina. Both dishes were amazing with excellent presentation. The wine list, while not extensive, was solid and we enjoyed a wonderful Pinot noir. The deserts were amazing as well, with the house dessert being like a hot fudge sundae with candied walnuts. A great restaurant that I would highly recommend.
Annual get together. Couple delicious drinks tasty dinner and shared a great dessert. They always are accommodating to dietary needs if possible and attentive.
Alexander's is consistently one of the finest dining experiences anywhere.
I recommend them to anyone who truly appreciates highest quality food, outstanding presentation and the best service.
Except for initial seating, we thought everything was excellent. It was nice to visit a local landmark and find that it continued to excel in service, food, and ambience.
Alexander’s is always a constantly wonderful place to dine. The food is always great, portion sizes are perfect, and the service is always top notch.
We do not spend a night in Roanoke without dining at Alexander’s. It is the best food experience in the city.
Everything about this restaurant is excellent. Only complaint was that after dinner coffee was lukewarm rather than hot.
This place has been around for at least 25 years, and never disappoints.
We were celebrating our two sons birthdays. Service was great, only thing they forgot to bring out the cheese course that my son had order, otherwise everything came out as ordered.
Saturday night 7:30 on Nov 10, 2018 for my wife's birthday. Our son came down from northern VA for the weekend and we had hiked to the Cascade Falls (Pembroke VA) earlier in the day so we were ready for a fine meal. I brought a bottle of a favorite Champagne (Perrier Jouet Grand Brut) as it was my wife's birthday, and I happily paid the $25 corking fee but saved about $50 overall compared to restaurant champagne prices. The server was timely and extremely friendly and we enjoyed the chilled to 50F bubbly before and during our dinner. A second waitress cheerfully helped us with our dinner menu selections, she was well informed and clearly a happy, educated person who enjoyed fine food. Shortly after placing our order,we were served our delicious but light dinner salads and warmed French-style sourdough bread. Perfect with graceful champagne. After our salad plates were cleared and the white tablecloth was decrumbed, our main courses were served. I had the quail with couscous and sauteed cranberries (OMG!), my son had the rack of (Colorado) lamb (OMG!) and my wife had the Crucian fish (very good). We all shared our food with each other and we had wonderful conversations with our son. The modern and well chosen paintings and huge mirrors on the walls blend perfectly with the beautiful chandelier type lights and upscale (not hipster) refined ambiance. We finished our meal with Red Rooster (Floyd VA) dark roasted coffee which was of course very good. As usual, we skip desserts in the constant effort to maintain some semblance of healthy able-bodied figures! Overall, we had an excellent and memorable experience as per usual with Alexander's, consistently the overall best restaurant in the Roanoke Valley. We'll be back!
Per Open Table we requasted a quiet location. On arrival the hostess told us she had a quiet alcove for us. That set the tone. It was low noise and we could talk comfortably. The table was nicely set with white linen tablecloths. Service was immediately and consistently present without being intrusive, and this on a fairly busy Saturday night. Bread arrived promptly after we ordered drinks and the entree arrived at just the right time. We both had the lamb ragu which was delicious - tender lamb with a just nicely seasoned sauce.- one of the best meals we have had in some time. The decor was warm and sophisticated. Prices were not inexpensive but I felt entirely reasonable in context.
Alexanders is a wonderful restaurant and we enthusiastically recommend it.
Creative food and attentive service. My wife raved about the shrimp with truffle sauce as the best ever.
My husband and I were in town just for the night and wanted a great steak. So we looked up Garden and Gun's list of what to do in Roanoke and this was the top of the list. So we made a reservation, we went at 9pm, so on the later side, but the service was impeccable and the food was lovely. Highly recommend!
The food & staff are amazing. It definitely is our go to place for fine dining. Never ever disappointed. Have had many wonderful meals and experiences
Wonderful experience every time you visit! Courteous, educated staff, fantastic food (the grouper special was unbelievable!), great wine and desserts! Simply Roanoke's best!
The menu had a wide selection and the food was beautifully presented and delicious. Our waitress gave us plenty of time to enjoy cocktails. The noise level is moderate which is perfect for fun conversation.
Great evening with friends! Food and service was exceptional.
Excellent menu & service!
Exceptional in all regards!
Alexanders is consistently superb. Delicious food and excellent service. No finer spot in our area. They have created high expectations from our past wonderful dining experiences. Once again those expectations were met or exceeded!
We are Brits driving the Blue Ridge Mountains parkway and wanted to celebrate a special occasion. Alexander’s was perfect - great food, wine and service!
The best fine dining, farm to table restaurant in Roanoke.
The food was delicious and well presented. We shared the BBQ Shrimp appetizer. I ordered the Scallops with Thai Brown Butter Sauce. Staff was beyond excellent! Alexander’s is one of our Roanoke faves.
I had requested a quiet table for our anniversary dinner. We had the best table in a private alcove to enjoy the amazing food, drinks, and exceptional service. We used to go to Stephen's when they were open but this is hands down our new favorite restaurant in Roanoke. I cannot say enough good things in one review.
Great food and great service. Will definitely come back on our next visit to Roanoke.
We stumbled upon Alexander's and I am so glad that we did! The food was impeccable and the wine list was fantastic! This is a true gem in the hubbub of Market square for a lovely quiet dinner.
The BEST. Great food, great service and perfect atmosphere.
Service and food was excellent!
Excellent venue, meal and service. Knowledgeable and friendly staff, on top of great food and bar program made for a memorable "first-timers" meal. We will definitely be back.
My daughter took me there for my birthday and the food was wonderful. It was nice to spend the evening with some wonderful food and my daughter. I would definitely recommend this gem. The desserts were amazing as well.
Truly top notch service, exceptional cocktails and great food and ambiance made it a truly memorable dinner.
Always a pleasure to visit and the perfect way to celebrate our wedding anniversary with son and daughter-in-law. Everyone is so friendly and makes you feel like family. And, of course, the food is exceptional. Two of us enjoyed the Salmon/Scallop/Shrimp dish and we were extremely happy with our choice. One Lamb Ragu was a big hit and the Pork Chop got rave reviews.
For any special occasion - or for no occasion at all - it's our absolute favorite restaurant in Roanoke.
Terrific, quiet, high end restaurant for romance or business. Food and service are 5-star!
We’ve been frequenting Alexander’s for at least 20-plus years.
Food and service near perfect.
We love this restaurant and are lucky that a spot of this caliber (best in the region) is here in our small town.
This is real gem. Great food and great service in a relaxed and quiet atmosphere.
A favorite for decades. I travel extensively in US and other countries and have occasion to dine at many fine restaurants. This remains a favorite of both my wife and me when we are anywhere near Roanoke. Owners are on site and our favorite server Bijorn was still there (trust his recommendations). This is a real jewel for Roanoke and we can’t wait to go back!
Excellent wine, food and service. Our new favorite place in Roanoke. Great atmosphere.
