Alex Madonna’s Gold Rush Steak House, at Madonna Inn Ratings and Reviews
Today is my birthday. Went here for dinner. We live in San Diego. Been here many times over the years. Was just here in September, plus stayed at at the Madonna Inn.
Tonight our server was awful. The busser was better.
When she came to the table to introduce herself (Roseanne), she interrupted the busser who was talking to us. My husband ordered Caesar salad, that was awful. He sent it back twice... never ate it. Caesar salad was a $1.00 up charge. Steaks were ok. I had to ask for a refill of my Diet Coke several times. At the end of the meal, she said she had something for me. She brought a piece of cake for my BD. She never asked the rest of the party if they wanted any dessert. We saw her present a desert tray to another table, but nothing to us. She brought the bill, and there was the $1.00 up charge for a salad we didn’t eat!!! We paid the whole bill. After, I went to the manager and he said he would talk to her and said they have turnover and new people.
It was not a good experience for a high-end restaurant... over $50 per person. I expect much better service.
A disappointing birthday.
I was entertaining relatives from out of town and wanted them to experience the Madonna inn. The place doesn't disappoint in terms of atmosphere. The food and service are subject particularly for the cost. I ordered the slider appetizer and it was terrible. The meat was so overcooked and dry. There was hardly any brie and no sauce to speak of.
Our waitress was no where to be found. Most of the time. Fortunately my guests had a great time.
Went for our anniversary, hoping to make a splash with my wife, and Madonna Inn did not disappoint. Portions were considerable food was tasty, steak cooked to perfection. Fried Chicken some of the best I've ever had. The month of January they offer a Prix fixe menu, which allowed us to sample a few things we probably wouldn't otherwise go for. Service was fabulous, and the dining area is something you really need to experience at least once in your life if your on the Central Coast. Not the cheapest fare, but definitely satisfied.
I decided to try SLO restaurant month with my family on New Years day. Food was amazing, the waiter was absolutely amazing & very attentive to us. We loved the holidays vibes still going on along with the music. I would recommend for a special occasion such as anniversary or date.
I tried for 2 months in advance to arrange for my girlfriend to be celebrated on her birthday in the Madonna Inn steakhouse. Once in text with the table booking, twice by regular e-mail and once over the phone. None of the e-mails where even answered and on the phone they said I should wait for the e-mails to be answered. Once in the restaurant several tables around us had birthdays celebrated by the staff through songs, balloons and cake. My girlfriend got nothing. This is therefore a criticism on the inability to even address questions that customers have. Really unacceptable. Answering questions (especially when asked several times through several channels) is fundamental to any good customer service.
I just felt it was unfair that other guests that were celebrating Anniversary like us were recognized. I reserved it with notes stating this is for our 2nd wedding anniversary. I guess the workers (host and hostess) here dont read notes and doesnt really connect with their guests. Though the server is inviting. Still feel that the service is lacking for the price we are willing to pay.
We have gone to the Madonna Inn for special events over the passed 15 years. The food was not what is has been in the past. The Rib Eyes were not worth the price the other night! We took people with us and it was disappointing. The service was great , however the food was not.
It was a rough start, the girls at the front were quite rude. I made my reservation on line for our anniversary and they failed to let our waiter know. It was embarrassing and I was quite upset to have to tell our waiter about our anniversary.
The wait staff was outstanding!!!! The food was excellent! There are several lights needed to be replaced.
We were actually seated at a table with a spot light on me that flickered. It only added to my aggravation to booking in advance for our special day!
Not sure if my husband would go back because of the high prices and not having personably hostesses being able to acknowledge our special day. I’m still very upset about it.
The only negative on our 45th anniversary celebration was the swordfish at the Gold Rush Steakhouse; it was dry - overcooked. We stayed at the Madonna Inn on our wedding night, and this was our first time back as we live in another state. My husband planned an anniversary trip that retraced our honeymoon, and this was the first location on that route.
Food wasn't quite what we anticipated, average at best. The staff was nice, but we had to call them over for things rather than them checking on us. The setting was beautiful, and we enjoyed the music from the area behind us (lounge, dining?). The hostess placed a pink balloon on our table, and everyone who came to our table wished us a Happy Anniversary. All in all, we would give them another chance if we are in the area again.
This is quite the showpiece. However, I was disappointed that their beef doesn't come from the Hearst Free-ranging cattle up the street and the fish is "fresh-frozen", in spite of the high cost of the meals. This is an old-school steak and baked potato restaurant. Go here for a drink, then keep going for a better meal anywhere else.
The Madonna Inn never disappoints when it comes to over the top fun design, ambiance and decorations. We were there for Christmas dinner. The service was wonderful and the atmosphere was festive. However our food wasn't delicious, it wasn't even very good. We ordered the turkey dinner, it was bland, looked packaged and slightly cool. While I won't eat Christmas Dinner there again, I will always continue to come to the Madonna Inn and bring people when they come to town. It's a delight of whimsy and usually I get a pretty good meal.
We had a very enjoyable Christmas-day meal. I recognize that it was a VERY busy day for Madonna Inn restaurant, but some improvements could be made in food offerings. The biggest disappointment was that the mashed (whipped) potatoes were less than desirable, appearing to come from a box, etc., not light and fluffy WITHOUT any special flavoring. Mashed potatoes should be be just purely the potato, which we can season to our taste. We were quite disappointed in the potatoes. And the Swordfish was pretty plain, nothing to speak highly of, being dry. Service was outstanding, but sadly the food was a bit of a letdown.
Was disappointed in the food. Took an elderly friend out for Christmas dinner at their request to go to Madonna Inn. Turkey was dry, stuffing bland and unimpressive. Only positive was attentive service. Otherwise nothing special, crowded, noisy and very difficult for elderly to navigate through.
We recently ate at the Madonna Inn for Christmas dinner. The ambiance was fabulous and the service was excellent. I had prime rib which was probably the best I've ever had and my guest had the salmon which was excellent. The decorations were lovely and we felt very special by the service we received and the way we were treated by our waiter. I look forward to going back on another special occasion. I thought it was a little overpriced, but I will certainly return.
Something has changed. I’ve taken my family to Madonna Inn for Christmas Eve 9 out of the past 10 years. In the past while we had to deal with long waits to get our table and the noise that accompanies a restaurant the size of this one, the food was always Really good.
That was not the case this last time. The portions were small, the swordfish over cooked, and if I didn’t know any better, I’d swear the mashed potatoes were instant. Oh, and the vegetables were so over cooked they were inedible.
Our waitress, however, was great. She was on top of things and very efficient without being intrusive.
I feel like we were taken for granted. This is our last time. We will find another way to continue this tradition.
