The Madonna Inn was as crazy, tacky and brightly coloured as I expected, so I wasn't disappointed. The staff too were a delight. However, the food was godawful and ridiculously over-priced. Go for one meal to enjoy the decor and atmosphere, but once will be enough.
Maybe it is just us, but we have been told that this is the best steakhouse in San Luis Obispo. It could also be the way they prepare their steaks – apparently barbecued over a fire? Usually that is the best way, however, we were disappointed in the outcome.
From our perspective, this is a place that you definitely want to see because it is so unusual in terms of ambience. In terms of steak, not so much.
Always a great place to eat with first class service. I had the usual excellent steak. The lady had the stuffed portabello mushroom entrée which I believe was a special. She reported that they were superb. It's not an inexpensive place, but there is no place like it, décor-wise, anywhere in the county. No place even close.
We took our daughter to celebrate her 21st birthday. The food was outstanding. My daughter and I had the Swordfish and my wife had the Filet. All were cooked perfectly. Our waiter was friendly and attentive. Will come back again.
Classic steakhouse in an amazing setting. Madonna Inn is beautiful and the decorations can be a bit over the top but that makes it all the more fun. Service is ALWAYS outstanding from the host, wait staff, bus people and the manager. My wife and I both ordered the NY Steak, ( $41 ) sounds a bit pricey BUT it came with a nice relish tray, nice size dinner salad ( with chilled fork ), at least a 16 oz. steak perfectly cooked over a wood fired grill plus baked potato and suger snap peas. They only charge $15 corkage so the entire dinner with my wine was $122. including tax and tip. Oh and to top it off, on the other side of the restautant was a live 4 piece band playing classics and a large dance floor. We stopped and danced a couple songs. Delightful evening !! We even shopped at a couple nice ladies dress shops on the second floor that were open until 9 PM.
Love the Madonna Inn and this landmark restaurant! Fun seasonal decor & friendly staff. Some dishes are better than others but my lobster tail was perfection & the desserts are not to be missed! The nightly live music brings out the charming locals and it feels like a throwback to a different time :) We will most definitely return to the Gold Rush Steakhouse on a future trip to the Inn!
It was an off night. We were celebrating an anniversary and got a happy birthday balloon. Ordered the French filet medium which was served rare...peas were mushy. My husband had chocolate cake and was sicker than a dog within a few hours. Usually we enjoy this place but this was an off night.
I love this place so much! So much love went into building the Madonna Inn, you can feel it. A very special place. Perfect for birthdays! They do everything, a pink balloon, cake, the gift shop will even wrap gifts for you!
Classic motor lodge, but with a really fine restaurant.
great atmosphere great dinner beautiful scenery had the greatest time celebrating anniversary
We visited the restaurant while staying at the Madonna Inn, and unfortunately based on several YELP reviews was a bit hesitant. I am pleased to say we had an outstanding experience. Our Server Jamie was excellent, friendly and helpful, she was available without being annoyingly overbearing. We thought the food was delicious, not innovative or awe inspiring but well prepared. The atmosphere was just fun, over-the-top tacky, just exactly as advertised. It was a fun night we would definitely go back
The ambience was crazy but the food and service were amazing! I went for my birthday and it was a great choice. I’d recommend it to others!
Met our daughter’s in-laws for dinner to celebrate becoming grandparents. We picked the steakhouse, obviously because we wanted a steak. I ordered the regular filet mignon dinner. The salad was simple with blue cheese dressing that could have used more blue cheese chunks, a baked potatoe that was perfect, green beans & the filet. The green beans or the filet had a bacon/smoked odor to them. The filet had a tough, dry exterior although the inside showed that it was cooked to the proper medium rare. I only ate a few bites of the steak, it was just too tough & dry. The next day I awoke with a migraine which means there were preservatives used (MSG/sodium nitrate or nitrate /sodium phosphate) in the salad dressing or as a seasoning on the beans &/or steak. Disappointed with the food but the service (Jamie) was TOP NOTCH.
What a pleasant surprise! My husband and I had the BEST TIME EVER, eating and dancing with a live old fashioned band. The atmosphere was hard to describe - best to look at the pictures online. We plan to come back soon! So much fun....what a memorable evening :)
We were visiting this restaurant for the last 15 years. I was recommending this place to all my friends and relatives. However, this time I was very disappointed. If Gold Rush Steak House want to be a high class restaurant they should install a water filter because it is not acceptable to give tap chlorine water to customers. I hope they can change this in a nearest future. Prices are ridiculously high for this food quality. We weren’t able to eat prime ribs, lamb was ok, bbq chicken was mostly bonds nothing to eat, their fish was very smelly. Green beans were added , they were nasty. No one touched them. Dear management please improve your quality. I really missed old times in Madonna Inn.
We dined here on a Thursday night recently and ordered the Prime Rib. We were seated quickly and had an very nice, friendly waitress. The Prime Rib was a gray blob of meat with no flavor - we had asked for Medium but this looked like it had been cooked some time earlier in the day and then microwaved. No pink anywhere and tougher than shoe leather. As we were about to say something to our waitress, the lights went out and she screamed like she had been stabbed. The lights came back on and a large man literally ran through the restaurant screaming "I touched the wrong switch. I touched the wrong switch." with the young girls in reception shrieking. Our waitress came over literally shaking and babbling about the bad things that happen when the lights go out. We realized we were in a clown show and paid our bill and left. Would not recommend this place ever.
What a unique place. So kitschy and fun! The food was FANTASTIC! Will definitely be back whenever we are in the area again
Worst ever ~ tired, worn, bad service, expensive and mediocre food at best.
After having spent 2 weeks in California eating out 3 meals a day, this was definitely the worst one value-for-money wise. It was a fun, tacky place, but steak prices should be half of what they are. I paid almost 50 dollars before tax and gratititude for my steak and I had to spit out parts of it because I couldn't chew it. The GSM wine was decent for the price though.
This place is fantastic! Unbelievable ambiance and amazing service. My children (ages 7&9) had a great time. We sat at "Dolly Parton's favorite booth" and it was amazing. This is a must on your bucket list. We will be back for sure!
This is just a must try. The ambiance is one-of-a-kind, the service was exceptional, and the food was really great.
This was our second visit in as many years and it was a wonderful experience again. My wife had the lamb, I had filet, both were prepared and presented beautifully. Our server Jordan and his assistant were very attentive and took excellent care of us. If you want great food and service, then I highly recommend this steakhouse.
We love this place! The service is great, the food perfect, and the band and dancing is great entertainment.
Highly recommend this gem.
This was the first time I have ever celebrated a Valentine's day, and the first Valentine's day with my girlfriend and the Gold Rush Steak House was the most amazing experience ever. The food was amazing, the ambiance was something from a movie I plan to make this a tradition for us.
The decor is amazing. Definitely worth it. But the food....OMG that was horrible. I get better food for lunch at my workplace cafeteria.
Totally exceeded our expectation! Sometimes restaurants will forgo taste for atmosphere or vice versa. But Madonna Inn Steakhouse has BOTH! Absolutely loved it!
It was our second time coming there! I loved it the first time it was amazing and so we decided to have a fancy date night.. our server wasn’t as nice and helpful as the last lady we had before.. otherwise that food was amazing and the pink champagne cake is fabulous! Probably will be coming back sometime , but now I know what to ask for when I call for a reservation... oh also that night music was a little to loud the microphone kept doing that awful sound when it’s to loud and pierced everyone’s ears ? Maybe should keep the music a notch down but otherwise love it!
We have been dining here for nearly 45 years. It looks the same but the food doesn’t seem the same. Perhaps because we decided to visit you on Valentine’s Day. Thanks for the memories!
Exceptional service. Food was what we expected. Jazz band was relaxing. Would definitely return to dine
The food was quite good and prepared as requested. The table service was fine, but with an advance reservation we waited 10 minutes to be seated in an almost empty restaurant. The man showing us to the table told my wife when she requested a booth that there were no booths available because we had not specifically requested one, and they now were all taken. We left 1 1/2 hours later and there were still numerous empty booths. The same man did not pull out a chair for my wife, and was very perfunctory in depositing our menus on the table. The waitress who waited on us was good. Interestingly enough, this is the third time we have dined in the restaurant at various times of the evening, and the same man has been setting up for live music. However, we have still to hear any music being played during the time we were dining, other than the canned music they play while they go on and on setting up.
My wife and I to went The Madonna Inn for a romantic dinner on Valentine’s Day. We had our wedding reception there in 1971. We live locally and go to the Madonna Inn for our anniversary and birthdays and we enjoy the tasty food, excellent service, and of course, the desserts! We especially like the Madonna Inn house champagne, locally produced.
This evening was a real treat for both of us. The prime rib, Caeser salad, expertly cooked sweet peas and handsomely adorned baked potatoes, with all the desired ingredients, were fabulous. Our server, Jared, was so attentive and fun and he took excellent care of us. A highlight was when a young couple near us got engaged! We watched as the man nervously spoke to his intended. She gladly put on the ring and admired it for a moment then, she immediately pulled out her phone and called friends and family. Since we were sitting behind the bride-to-be, we could watch the screen change from a delighted face squealing with joy to a close-up picture of her ring! The faces changed but the ring sparkled each time.
Another lovely occasion at the Madonna Inn!
Too expensive for bland food.
Weird decor, but adds to the charm. Old school, steakhouse menu, service. Steaks are pricey but excellent, smokey flavor, tender.
So much fun! The atmosphere of the restaurant is wonderful and charming. You also get a lot of food with the order of entree. I’d say it’s worth the price. Will definitively be going again!
We spent the weekend at the inn and had dinner at the Steakhouse. Food was delicious, little pricey, but you definitely get what you pay for! I gave service 4 stars only because we were first seated at a small, poorly located table. With my reservations well over a month in advance and being a special occasion, I requested a new table and we were accommodated immediately. There is live music and dancing in the adjacent ballroom Wednesday through Sunday starting about 8pm so if you want a quiet dinner, you may avoid those times. Although for us it was pleasing.
I give this restaurant 5 Stars. I Loved it! The food, service and ambiance were spectacular. Will be back!
Our server, Jamie, was delightful, sweet, attentive and efficient. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.
Jordan our server was exceptional. Food is consistently of high quality. Ambiance is always fun
We had a company dinner celebration and everyone had a wonderful time.
Disappointing at best, very disappointing considering the price.
