Pre-Theatre dinner with friends. Prompt, friendly service. Great beer selection. Fish and chips and blue cheese stuffed burger were all delicious.
Service was great until her section got too big and she didn’t check in often and sort of rushed us out
We were there pre-theatre. Great beer selection, food was okay but not memorable.
My relationship with the Alewife start years ago with their Smokeburger. While that is no longer on the menu, the 50/50 burger recently hit the spot! Accompanied by a manageable size of their excellent fries, I went home with that feel-good post dinner high you only get from visiting a place that gets it just right.
We came here with a reservation after seeing a show at the arena. We were seated immediately and ordered drinks. Our waiter seemed rushed but as he dropped off the drinks we asked if we could order some appetizers. We ordered nachos and crab rangoons. The nachos were the worst nachos I ever attempted to eat. They were so stale they were inedible. The rangoons were cold. We explained that our nachos seemed "chewy" and the waiter stated they were stale and he didn't have time to see if they had any fresh ones. We own a restaurant and were appalled by that response. He didn't have time to check for fresh chips???? He said he would remove them from bill. With that, we asked for the check, paid our bill and went next door and had a lovely dinner at Forno. Will never recommend and will not go back.
Alewife is in a great location, just across the street from the Hippodrome. My 7 yr old daughter and I had dinner before we went to a performance at the Hippodrome. The service was great. Our waiter and the other servers took the extra time to make sure my daughter had what she needed. They don't have a "children's menu" but will change things on the menu for a child's taste. My daughter had the fish and chips and really liked it. The only thing was the portion size. The portions are big. Since we were on our way to the Hippodrome we weren't able to take anything with us. Overall, it was a great experience and look forward to going there again.
Great beer choices. Food was excellent. Service almost too good, only had time for one beer.
We arrived a few minutes early from the theater and were seated immediately. We had great beer and appetizers which came out promptly. The crab rangoon and the vinegar onion rings were amazing. The place was very busy but we never felt like the service wasn't great. Our dinners were out in a very reasonable amount of time and everything was delicious. I love this place for good food, great selection of beers and fantastic location for before or after the theater.
Extensive beer list but seems to clump around IPAs and sour beers. That said, couldn't get a West Coast IPA which was odd given how many there were to choose from. The burger was delicious and the fries were very hot. The calamari po' boy and our onion rings were served luke warm to cool. FYI - cold calamari - not terribly appetizing. To be fair we didn't send it back as we were in a hurry. Service was good. Check out the menu (beer and food) before you go to make sure you can find something - it skewed a bit odd.
Very convenient to the Hippdrome and great food. Nice perk- comment on your reservation that your are dining before a show and they will make every effort to assure you are on time.
No service. Over booked. Stay away.
Food was very good, but options are limited. Menu changes regularly though. Large beer selection.
Food was average at best. Menu looks intriguing but actual taste not up to par. Drink selection is great but overpriced.
The restaurant was extremely disappointing. The menu was very limited. The fish was all breading and no fish which we ordered. My steak was not well prepared. Very upsetting evening!
I eat here at least twice a year when I go to Everyman or the Hippodrome. I was not excited about going there because on the last few visits their food did not wow me. I tried the Snitzel pork sandwich and I was wowed. It was delicious and a huge portion. Nice addition to the menu. My friend had the fish and chips and said it was good.
The menu is extremely limited and is mainly very limited unhealthy bar food.
Rugged pub style in old row house storefront. Beautiful interior. Extensive beer offerings and drafts on-tap. Across from Hippodrome theater, thus very busy on show nights. Food offerings are gastropub and somewhat eclectic. Overall, good impression.
Alewife is one of my favorite Baltimore restaurants due to the ambiance, food, and amazing beer list. However, during my last visit the service was poor. I joined my friend who was already seated with a drink and did not get asked for my order for 15-20 minutes and it was another 15-20 minutes before my tap cider arrived. Our appetizer only meal came quickly, but our server was slow to check in about another round and to see if everything came to our satisfaction. For the price, this is not the service I expect.
We were going to the Hippodrome Theater for a musical. I made reservation in advance. We had to leave after waiting for our food. Two items on the special menu were sold out. It was also very loud. We will not recommend eating there. We had M&Ms for dinner. Very disappointed with Alewife 👎
Food was very good. Service was slow. Kitchen was overwhelmed.
Food was fantastic. Pre theater was the hitch: 35 minutes before the show we still hadn’t received our entrees. We did receive our food in time to wolf down and cross the street to Hippodrome - though the table next to ours only received their entrees 15 minutes before curtain. Too close for comfort or comfortable dining. Seemed an issue for many tables, though pretty much all noted it was pre theater dining (or said so anyway). Maybe it was just our night. At any rate, the food was so good, really amazing, that we will be back.
Both my husband and I were unable to order our first choices off the menu - fish and chips and shrimp tacos - even though we were eating in the middle of the dinner hour; both items were sold out. The chef did, however, give us a complimentary order of crab ragoon which was delicious. However, we each decided to order the steak frittes and fries instead. The flat iron steak had so much fat that we each left half of our entrees on our plates. What was not fat laden was not impressive. We will not be back.
Good place to drink, but not to eat. There was not much variety on the menu. Most food preparation were very heavy.
A few good veggie options for our guest, but we are personally not interested in veggie when dining out. My daughter and I ordered the steak and I sent mine back for being overdone despite the pointed warning that I would do so if it were the case (my daughter's was too but it isn't as big an issue for her). Then 1/3 of both our steaks was grisel. Not far, which I enjoy in small proportion, but unchewable grisel. But the flavor was fantastic. Everything else was as well. Especially the service. Top notch and a staff that fills in any gaps.
Our steak will not determine the whole experience, which will gladly warrant a return visit!
This is not the first time I've been to Alewife, but is most likely my last. I travel to Baltimore several times a year and found this restaurant many years ago and have made a point to visit when I can. This night, business was slow and we sat at the bar. The bartender was distracted and left us alone which was surprising since there were only 5 customers. When she did see us and got our beer order, she accidentally poured me the wrong beer and it took some hinting to point out I didn't think it was the right one, but it was still good. When she realized her mistake, instead of letting me keep the mistaken drink, she picked it up and poured it down the sink. Poor manners I thought. Next was the food. The last time I was at Alewife, I dealt with the higher than normal prices by convincing myself the food was higher than average. It is clear to me, rent must be high or business slow, because the price of the food no longer matches the quality. The burger, which was once like a fresh, hot, Krispy Kreme doughnut made of beef, is now a dry, flavorless patty covered in toppings to disguise the lack of quality protein. The fries were not the duck fat ones I remember, but a poor excuse of frozen potato dumped in some oil for a few minutes. At least get the timing right so the fries are hot. Ours were warm at best and I could tell had not been recently cooked. With the few people in the restaurant, they should have been cooked to order.
I will NOT be back to Alewife!
So disappointed in our visit. This used to be one of our favorite places to go as the food & beer list were always amazing. Sadly, we probably won’t be returning here as this visit (and one prior) were so disappointing. The beer list was not at all impressive or unique and didn’t offer a good variety of options like you would hope. We started with nachos which had very little flavor at all. The fish & chips and the chicken sandwich were nothing creative or memorable. Our bill was way too high for food & drinks that weren’t good.
Visited the Alewife before a show at the Everyman Theater. Food and drinks were very good. It was much quieter and slower pre-show for this performance than when the Hippodrome is having a show which made for very nice ambiance. Service and food were good as always.
Best shrimp taco ever! Went there for dinner before theater, outstanding craft beer selection and both her dinners were excellent. Would definitely return. Waitress very friendly and helpful. Only issue, she was the only waitress working and we had a little issue getting our check and we needed to leave for the show.
They had run out of the only 2 dishes on the menu I was interested in (stuffed acorn squash and kale salad), and the waitress didn't bother to tell me that what I wanted was unavailable until after I asked for it. I was looking for something relatively healthy so when the squash and salad weren't available (no other salad on the menu except an iceberg wedge -blech), I ended up getting the squash soup, which was watery and salty and tasted like it came out of a box.
When we first got there it was not crowded, but service was still slow. At 7pm they were out of two appetizers and 2 beers that we ordered (order, wait........, then come back to say they're out...). Food was acceptable. BUT, 3 of us got sick that night.
Food was hit or miss. The 50-50 burger was excellent. The shrimp tacos were over-filled, only one had sauce on it, and there was way to much breading on the shrimp. The squash soup was very good. Service was OK. The tables were not preset with spoons and anytime anyone in the room we were in ordered soup they had to ask for a spoon.
We really enjoyed our pre-show dinner at Alewife. The service and food/beverages were very good. It put us in a good mood to start the night.
Excellent dinner! Potsticker appetizer was great and both the sausage platter and Monty (pork sandwich) were very good. Extensive beer selection. Service was very good even on New Year's Eve and at the end of a Raven's game when it was very crowded.
Great beer menu. Great service. Perfect spot if you are heading to a show at Everyman Theatre or the Hippodrome.
We enjoyed the fish & chips & wide beer selection. Nice pub like atmosphere & very attentive server.
I have eaten at Alewife before. The food is decent; the service could be much better. On this occasion, loud rock-n-roll music was playing during dinner hour (6:30). I like rock-n-roll, but this was loud, aggressive, in-your-face rock-n-roll, not suitable for background music for dining. It was so unpleasant that we left without eating and instead went to Forno's next door, for a much quieter environment where we could enjoy eating and talking to each other.
Interesting eclectic menu, but when we were there at 7:30p on a Saturday, they were out of every dish we ordered..... and the beers we wanted to order too :( Our host & server were very nice and polite, unfortunately there was a very rude waitress who bit my head off when I was looking for the bathroom. Very cool atmosphere, they just need to get their act together.
Horrible wait staff; Horrible food; Intrusive music
Super convenient to the Hippodrome. Great food and service, but it the noise level was very high. Hard to have a conversation at a table for six. Probably would not be an issue with a smaller party.
The service here was very good and friendly. The location when one is going to the Hippodrome can't be beat. The food was good, but not extraordinary. I do like the fact that this is a former bank. The one complaint I have is that my dining partner and I wanted to have a conversation and the staff seated a table of 7 with small children right next to us in a small room. The noise level was such that we could not hear each other.
