Food was fine, servers were pleasant, but the whole thing feels a bit overpriced for the general ambiance and location. It's a neat place, but not so neat that you feel like it overcomes the downtown surroundings and meets your expectations for the price you pay.
Other than the fact that at 6:30 on a Saturday night they were already out of the two apps we wanted to order, the food was decent, the beer selection great and our balcony perch kept us away from the loud crowd downstairs. Were I to go to another show at the Hippodrome I'd be back.
We were promptly seated. Hosted was very friendly. Gave us the “vault room” as the building is an old bank. Servers were very attentive and helpful. Food was a major disappointment. Greasy and uninspired. Atmosphere was fun.
We enjoyed our pre-theatermeal. The restaurant is very “funky”—in a converted bank. The menu is a bit limited, but the meals we chose were good. The bleu cheese stuffed hamburger was a bit dry after the bleu cheese was gone but still quite tasty. we would certainly go there again,
Alewife was convenient for pre-theater dining. The service was friendly. The wine list was minimal and not impressive, but the food was well prepared. The restaurant wouldn't accept my Open Table $10 reward because the server said their system isn't set up to use the rewards. I had made the reservation through the O T reward page, so this was a surprise to me.
Excellent food. Creative menu, extensive beer selection and cocktail menu. Unique venue in an old insurance building. Service was very friendly but a little slow. Waited 15 minutes to get served a drink but I think there was a mix up regarding who put the order in. Have been there several times, definitely will be back.
Outstanding food and atmosphere......great old building. Excellent beer selection as well.
Going to a show
Loved our meal and service was excellent. Evan, our server, answered all of our questions and was very prompt and polite.
Good food and beer list. If you are trying to go out with your (young) kids, you might want to skip this place. No kids menu and the existing menu is too sophisticated for most kids, in my opinion.
Fantastic burger and great service. A terrific pre-theater restaurant! It is in front of the Hippodrome and next to the back entrance of Everyman Theater. We were able to park, enjoy a leisurely dinner, walk to the theater, and arrive before the show started, without rushing.
Food was good. Beer selection wonderful. Server was fantastic but slow kitchen and slow bar.
The burger and margaritas were delicious and perfect pre-Buffett concert!
phenomenal start to opening day! Thanks alewife!
Along with 2 friends and 2 family members I went to Alewife (Casual) March 29 in advance of part of my group attending the opening day of the Orioles baseball game. We did this two years ago as well. The selection of craft beers is very extensive, the menu offered varying choices. We opted for sandwiches, Wings and Fish and Chips. The prices were appropriate. The wait staff was attentive friendly and responsive. The other patrons were cheerful and anticipating the start of a new Oriole Season. Our servings were very enjoyable and the sizes were ample. Although Alewife normally doesn't open until 4PM. We are planning to go there for opening day next year. Enjoyed our Alewife experience.
This restaurant has really gone down hill. We ordered the steak frites, fish and chips and a crab Rangoon appetizer. The appetizer was the only edible part of our order. The fish, steak and fries were all served cold. Definitely not worth the money. The coffee we ordered after the meal was also cold.
Very very disappointing for an $80 bill.
The menu selection was disappointing. Very strange selections & a lot of fried foods. Will not return.
We’ve eaten here twice before. Disappointed each time, but thought we’d try one more time before a show at the Hippodrome. This time we went for lunch before a Sunday matinee and will never go back again. We all ordered Bloody Marys and the waitress came back saying they didn’t have the mix, since they aren’t a breakfast restaurant. We then ordered ice tea, which they didn’t have either. Not a good start! The waitress seemed very sorry to be there, took a long time to even bring lemons for water, and the service overall was pretty bad. The food is extremely overpriced, especially at lunch. Paying $18 for a burger or French dip, which came with nothing, is pretty steep. And $10 margaritas, which are mostly ice, is ridiculous too.
In addition, we were the first table seated after they finished opening, and there was still a partially eaten roll on the floor (hopefully left by humans). Also, staff were overheard complaining about coworkers and being there. Not good within earshot of the restrooms. Why this restaurant gets good ratings is beyond me! There are few dining choices near the theater, but now there is one less for us.
You were out of fish and chips but the pizza macaroni and cheese was a good substitute. A regular salad with grilled chicken would be a good addition to your menu for those on a diet!
Pre-Theatre dinner with friends. Prompt, friendly service. Great beer selection. Fish and chips and blue cheese stuffed burger were all delicious.
Service was great until her section got too big and she didn’t check in often and sort of rushed us out
We were there pre-theatre. Great beer selection, food was okay but not memorable.
My relationship with the Alewife start years ago with their Smokeburger. While that is no longer on the menu, the 50/50 burger recently hit the spot! Accompanied by a manageable size of their excellent fries, I went home with that feel-good post dinner high you only get from visiting a place that gets it just right.
We came here with a reservation after seeing a show at the arena. We were seated immediately and ordered drinks. Our waiter seemed rushed but as he dropped off the drinks we asked if we could order some appetizers. We ordered nachos and crab rangoons. The nachos were the worst nachos I ever attempted to eat. They were so stale they were inedible. The rangoons were cold. We explained that our nachos seemed "chewy" and the waiter stated they were stale and he didn't have time to see if they had any fresh ones. We own a restaurant and were appalled by that response. He didn't have time to check for fresh chips???? He said he would remove them from bill. With that, we asked for the check, paid our bill and went next door and had a lovely dinner at Forno. Will never recommend and will not go back.
Alewife is in a great location, just across the street from the Hippodrome. My 7 yr old daughter and I had dinner before we went to a performance at the Hippodrome. The service was great. Our waiter and the other servers took the extra time to make sure my daughter had what she needed. They don't have a "children's menu" but will change things on the menu for a child's taste. My daughter had the fish and chips and really liked it. The only thing was the portion size. The portions are big. Since we were on our way to the Hippodrome we weren't able to take anything with us. Overall, it was a great experience and look forward to going there again.
Great beer choices. Food was excellent. Service almost too good, only had time for one beer.
We arrived a few minutes early from the theater and were seated immediately. We had great beer and appetizers which came out promptly. The crab rangoon and the vinegar onion rings were amazing. The place was very busy but we never felt like the service wasn't great. Our dinners were out in a very reasonable amount of time and everything was delicious. I love this place for good food, great selection of beers and fantastic location for before or after the theater.
Extensive beer list but seems to clump around IPAs and sour beers. That said, couldn't get a West Coast IPA which was odd given how many there were to choose from. The burger was delicious and the fries were very hot. The calamari po' boy and our onion rings were served luke warm to cool. FYI - cold calamari - not terribly appetizing. To be fair we didn't send it back as we were in a hurry. Service was good. Check out the menu (beer and food) before you go to make sure you can find something - it skewed a bit odd.
Very convenient to the Hippdrome and great food. Nice perk- comment on your reservation that your are dining before a show and they will make every effort to assure you are on time.
No service. Over booked. Stay away.
Food was very good, but options are limited. Menu changes regularly though. Large beer selection.
Food was average at best. Menu looks intriguing but actual taste not up to par. Drink selection is great but overpriced.
The restaurant was extremely disappointing. The menu was very limited. The fish was all breading and no fish which we ordered. My steak was not well prepared. Very upsetting evening!
I eat here at least twice a year when I go to Everyman or the Hippodrome. I was not excited about going there because on the last few visits their food did not wow me. I tried the Snitzel pork sandwich and I was wowed. It was delicious and a huge portion. Nice addition to the menu. My friend had the fish and chips and said it was good.
The menu is extremely limited and is mainly very limited unhealthy bar food.
Rugged pub style in old row house storefront. Beautiful interior. Extensive beer offerings and drafts on-tap. Across from Hippodrome theater, thus very busy on show nights. Food offerings are gastropub and somewhat eclectic. Overall, good impression.
Alewife is one of my favorite Baltimore restaurants due to the ambiance, food, and amazing beer list. However, during my last visit the service was poor. I joined my friend who was already seated with a drink and did not get asked for my order for 15-20 minutes and it was another 15-20 minutes before my tap cider arrived. Our appetizer only meal came quickly, but our server was slow to check in about another round and to see if everything came to our satisfaction. For the price, this is not the service I expect.
We were going to the Hippodrome Theater for a musical. I made reservation in advance. We had to leave after waiting for our food. Two items on the special menu were sold out. It was also very loud. We will not recommend eating there. We had M&Ms for dinner. Very disappointed with Alewife 👎
Food was very good. Service was slow. Kitchen was overwhelmed.
Food was fantastic. Pre theater was the hitch: 35 minutes before the show we still hadn’t received our entrees. We did receive our food in time to wolf down and cross the street to Hippodrome - though the table next to ours only received their entrees 15 minutes before curtain. Too close for comfort or comfortable dining. Seemed an issue for many tables, though pretty much all noted it was pre theater dining (or said so anyway). Maybe it was just our night. At any rate, the food was so good, really amazing, that we will be back.
