Server forgot our sparkling water and to put in order for one of the entrees, the paella, which takes thirty minutes to make.

We dine here now and then and like the atmosphere and food. However, some tapas (e.g. pulpo, gambas) could use more seasoning. The biggest drawback are the prices as the portions are extremely tiny even for tapas. The empanadillos are only two tiny empanadas that cost $8.95. So very pricey for the amount of food one receives especially if it's a group. Prepare to pay a huge bill at the end. Think the owners ought to give a bit more since the prices really are too steep.

Very true to its Mediterranean heritage, This Tapa styled Spanish restaurant is a place you need to visit, whether your visiting San Fransisco or live here. It's been open for 20 years, information I was able to attain through the very accessible & experienced Chef/Owner. Everything was flavourful and quaint! I felt like I was back in Barcelona!

Service was attentive and friendly and the food was very authentic and delicious. Everyone in our group of four (two couples) had a great time. We enjoyed sharing a number of small plates and loved the Flan for dessert!

We'd all noticed Alegrias for years but hadn't tried until the day of my partner's daughter's move into her Marina apartment. Gorgeous warm night and we walked here for dinner. All downhill from there. Although the service was excellent and the value/ambience good, the food was mediocre. No flavor to speak of except on the daily special octopus (served on a bland piece of boiled potato, which reduced the impact of flavor). Felt like we were eating in a 1950s version of a Spanish restaurant. Not up to San Francisco standards.

Was a bit disappointed in this restaurant. The crab cakes were good but the vegetarian croquette was not big deal and the octopus was not great and very tiny cut up pieces on boring slices of potato. Decent, but just nothing special...

Excellent service with knowledgeable staff. We had a quiet table near the front. Tapas were as expected in size but unexpected in taste: marvelous crack cakes that were crispy outside and soft inside and served with an amazing jalapeño sauce; prawns in a red garlic sauce that we mopped up with bread. We tried the calamari- served hot and freshly cooked but otherwise nothing special
Excellent sangria and paella
Would go back anytime we want something tasty and unique
Downside is parking as it is on the busy part of Lombard though there is a garage across the street
Definitely a new restaurant on our go to list

We were first seated in the back next to a bachelorette party which was very loud. I didn't even get a chance to mention it to our hostess, and she offered to move us to a quieter table. We have been here before and we love the tapas. Patatas Aioli are always a favorite. The Empanadas and the Croquetas were delicious! Setas al Ajillo (mushrooms) were also amazing! It was our first time ordering the seafood paella, and we were afraid it would be too much food after the tapas, but it was just the right size. The rice around the edges was a little crispy, giving it a crunch we loved. Every time we come here we try new dishes, and have never been disappointed.

The dishes here were tops. Its the best tapas we've had outside Barcelona and we've tried many places. We especially recommend the spanish tortilla and the calamari! The chocolate mousse was a perfect finish along with a glass of port :)

This is the second time I've eaten here and enjoyed it a great deal both times. In particular,
it is QUIET (at least until 7:30 pm when it was full). That's a hard thing to find in San Francisco restaurants, even fine dining. The tapas were delicious, with lots of variety. I even tried rabbit and liked it, although I'd never eaten it before. An anchovy tapas was terrific, too. My dinner without wine, shared with a friend , came to $38 each, a reasonable price for chef-prepared dishes, not reheated commercial food. I recommend this wonderful little spot!

We enjoyed yet another wonderful and delicious dinner at Alegrias. This was our fourth time dining at Alegrias and we have always enjoyed the food, service and venue. This was no exception. In fact, this dinner/birthday celebration was exceptional. The wait staff and chef/owner were particularly attentive and gracious. We were a party of ten and we wanted to try the tantalizing varieties of tapas and paella. Fortunately, the restaurant offers a prix fixe menu that includes all of the favorite tapas and paella, including vegetarian options. The tapas are prepared and served for each foursome so we were not bothered with the passing of plates from one end of the table to the other. As for the paella, the waiters spoon the paella from the skillets to our plates sparing us the nuisance of passing large hot skillets from person to person. All the dishes were very tasty, well seasoned and served hot. We couldn't have asked for better service, food preparation or value. We will certainly be back to enjoy another delightful evening at Alegrias.

Very nice environment. Food was only so-so. The mussels were the best I've had in a long time. Same for calamari. But the shrimp was not good in any dish. It was very dry and tasteless. The wait staff was very nice. We had cheese and olives which does not need an explanation and shrimp, calamari and mussels. We also had spinach that no one liked except me. The paella was ok except for the shrimp. Crema Catalana was good.

One of our favorite restaurants. Great food (and it is the only restaurant I know of in SF that has tripe always on the menu) and it is really quiet and peaceful. I am sick of restaurants with a "hot vibe" where you cannot converse across a two person table.

8 of us got together for a girls night out and it was perfect. The food was delicious and everyone got to choose something and then we all got to share Paella - delicious sangria rounded it all off. Our waiter was great and we all had a good time and were not made to feel rushed at all, even when we realized we were the last people there. The owner came over to say hello and check we'd had a good time. All in all, so nice to come across a family owned restaurant where they truly did seem to want their guests to have a great meal in a relaxed ambiance. Highly recommended.

Alegrias got rave reviews on Check Please, Bay Area so my friend and I thought we would try it. It was wonderful!!! We loved the cozy and romantic atmosphere--it felt like being transported to a homey restaurant in Spain. Our server was gracious and helpful. The tapas were delicious and tasted home-cooked. The Spanish wines were a perfect complement to the food. The owner came to our table and jotted down a couple of his favorite restaurants in Barcelona and Toledo when he learned I would be traveling there soon. He was delightful. We are very eager to return to Alegrias to try the paella and more of the tapas. It was a perfect restaurant and dining experience.

Dinner at Alegrias was phenomenal! I've been to a lot of Spanish restaurants, but the tapas here were more flavorful than anything I've ever tasted. The potatoes were salty and delicious. The asparagus was cooked perfectly and the veggie empanadillas were bursting with flavor.
The owner came by our table to chat for a while and made us feel right at home. His story and conversation really made the evening perfect.
Can't wait to go back!

My wife and I love Spanish food. We had Father's Day dinner at Algerias. The tapas were just average, except for the ham which was very good. The problem was the service, or lack of it. The restaurant was not busy at all, yet service was extremely slow and our waiter never checked on us. We had to raise our arms to get his attention on several occasions. After the tapas, we asked him to bring us dessert menus which were on the counter only a few feet from our table. He walked by the counter and disappeared for 10 min. When we finally spotted him setting up tables in the back of the restaurant, we waved our arms to get his attention. We reminded him that we asked for dessert menus a while ago. He did bring us dessert menus then, but never offered any explanation why we had to ask twice. By then we were so tired of waiting that we lost our appetite. We paid and left. One of our worst dining experiences.

We really like patronizing family-owned restaurants like Alegrias. It just makes the occasion and the atmosphere that more special. Also it's a quaint, cozy restaurant. We've been back a few times now as we find it to be most convenient for a paella and tapas meal.

The food is overall pretty good especially the paellas. However, some tapas personally I find to be a tad overpriced. For instance, the asparagus with shaved Manchego cheese is a bit on the high end for a tiny portion even for tapas. The small empanadas are really tasty, but at $8+ for two it is costly when a group orders two or more portions.

Service is usually efficient, but when the restaurant gets busy it is sometimes slow. We have had to remind the server(s) of requests, for instance.

So it's a really nice restaurant for a relaxing meal, but you'll need to consider how many tapas to order, otherwise, your bill will run into the $TEMP_OC_CONTENT_HERE#039;s.
